I'd be inclined to let her eat what she enjoys, very important when they are poorly to eat something whether its technically the 'right' food or not, it might be enough to boost her appetite again

Morning Pav, hope Pheoebe has managed to eat something by now   Max does the lip licking thing as well, he does like a little hiccupy noise, then licks his lips, so I've always assumed it was a nausea probem, but I've never known whether it was related to kidneys or thyroid.

I've been taking food to Max as well to stimulate his taste buds, and also hand feeding if he's not really showing much interet as well, once he's eating a tiny bit he will then go back for more. Its almost like the thought of it puts them off, but once they've tasted some, they want to eat a bit more.

Will Phoebe eat Applaws food hun?  Its my tried and tested way of getting Mr Max to eat when he's ignoring everything else, chicken and cheese is a firm fave in our house  :)

Keeping fingers and toes crossed that she perks up today, and that she will get her appetite back  xxxx
Thankyou Clare, i did say in Kates reply , i do take the food to her but if i offer food in my hand she attacks, some times i take the bite and scratches and rub the food to her mouth but then she gets really upset and moves.
She doesnt like Applaws but i have Hi Life and Gourmet which she does like, but the problem is with IBD is very important to have prescription food other wise she will get worse, the vet said to take her back tomorrow if she doesnt start , so i just have to keep trying tonight. Thankx x

Did they check Potassium levels Pav? - the head down can indicate low potassium which a lot or CRF cats are apparently prone to. It also mentions loss of appetite - it's a minefield

http://www.felinegood.co.uk/treatments/en/potassium.shtml
Thankyou Mark, Yes they did full blood test and Urine test. I paid £700.00 just for tests and ultrasound from chest and Abdomen.! I called the vet after reading your post and he said the potassium is normal and The Phos is 1.70. Urine test is back and all is normal . He said if she doesnt start eating by tomorrow i should take her back .It must be the IBD that making her feel like this because her thyroid and Kidney is not too bad but her tummy looks huge and her shaved coat is covered in dandraff. I know its no tratment for IBD or CRF  i just have to make sure she has the right diet if she start eating.
On Tuesday she had steroid and antibiotic injection , thats why the vet was surprised that she hasnt started ating yet?
I hate seeing her like this.

licking lips must be nausea, which sounds like why she's not wanting to eat at all. I'm so sorry. Those creatinine and urea values aren't that high. Is she constipated? You could try lactulose. I also find letting mine eat a bit of green plant (grass or spider plant) helps them with mild nausea. Would your vet allow pepcid for stomach acid? Some people swear by Slippery elm bark too.

i/d is (I think) 0.8g per 100g of phosphorus which is not low but not as high as normal cat food either. My vet likes ipakitine although it is from crustaceans so you have to watch calcium values. Renalzin can apparently be sprayed in the mouth (haven't tried yet but will have to with Max). The other way he said was or was to put the binder powder into a gelcap and give it at the same time as the food.  Sorry if you've posted here, but what is her phosphate level as if it's still normal you may not need to use a binder yet as the binders do tend to make IBD worse.  Swampy's had IBD since he had liver disease and the only thing that helps is lactulose and fluid.
I hope she feels less sick soon and starts eating. The vicious circle is sometimes when they feel just a bit nauseous (not as bad as she does) giving a little assist feed gets them feeling better so they eat on their own.
Have you tried something totally bland like plain chicken or chicken broth (no garlic or onions)?
Thanks Kate, for the information. No she is not constipated , she goes out few times a day and eat loads of grass.
Phoebe doesn't eat her food if i add anything i had her SEB and gave it away , her Phos level is 1.70 which the vet said its fine.
Her IBD is worse than her CRF at the moment, thanks i didn't know binder makes IBD worse , i had a chat with the vet today and told him i am not using the binder i ordered, he didn't know they make IBD worse!?
The problem with Phoebe is she is very difficult cat i cant touch her or get any food or med to her unless its hidden in row meat even that she taste it and spit it some times i waste many tablets till i get one to her, as for assist feeding i do take the food to her and sit but if i try to feed her with spoon or my hand she attacks, (my hands are covered in scratch and bites) and then get annoyed and leaves, so basically i stress her by trying to help, its very difficult situation .
The thing is she does drink a lot and has put on 700 grams since March which is good but right now i need to get her to eat so she takes her med. Thanks again for your advice and i am so glad Max is eating and a bit better, i do follow his tread . xx

Hopefully your vet is able to source the Alu-Caps for you but thought I'd post the response on here in case it helps anyone else...

Thank you for contacting 3M. In January 2007 3M sold its branded pharmaceutical business to MEDA Pharmaceuticals. You would need to contact
MEDA directly on 0845 460 0000 to answer your enquiry. I can inform you that they use a distributor in the UK called UDG so they hold all of the
MEDA stock and they can be contacted on 01773 510123.

Hope Phoebe has eaten as is feeling perkier :care:

awww poor Phoebe, I wish I could help it's awful when you don't know what to do  hopefully the steroids will boost her appetite soon.  Pav have you tried to hand feed her, I used to take food to Schui on the sofa when he wouldn't eat - not force him but give it on a spoon and coax him and he loved that and it usually helped.  Then he would start to eat himself,  I wsh I could help more

Mark i can send you some if you want to try for Willow.

Thanks Pav  but I have a few from a couple of years ago. From what I read, they can cause constipation so best to keep an eye as that must be painful for a cat with IBD

also can I still give her raw meat because thats how i can get her to take tablets .

Raw meat is still fine to give her - in fact raw can be helpful for IBD anyway. Don't agree with your vets recommendations for dry food only - for a cat with CRF? madness! Glad you are going to give her wet food as well

Is she a controlled thyroid cat or are you looking for higher cal aswell in a food?
I wouldnt do a dry diet for a crf cat.
Its difficult but sometimes you need to look at treating the one that affects her most, is her ibd bad? Id be tempted to stick to the sensitivity wet as that would keep her tummy settled and comfy and provide moisture for her crf.

Have you looked at i/d values? Not sure how that would compare, they do get bored of it tho.
Fingers crossed the alucaps arent noticed

Yep, AluCaps are capsules, you just pull them apart and sprinkle the powder on.

I used to find the best place to get Alu-Caps was the small independant chemists rather than bigger Boots. I've emailed the manufacturers of AluCaps to ask if it's still made and if so where can it be bought, will let you know if I hear back

Have you tried Ipakitine? - Clapton won't touch Renalzin but he is fine eating Ipakitine. I think they stopped making Alucaps. You could try asking the pharmacist if they can get Aluminium hydroxide gel (that is all Alucaps were with nothing added). I have been searching with no luck. There are some products but only available in Canada. There is a dog pill for flatulence (Bob Martin Anti-flatulence pills) but they also contain Magnesium Trisilicate which is apparently added to stop the Aluminium Hydroxide causing constipation.

Hi Pav,

Just checked their website and D/D contains 0.19% Phosphorus compared to K/D 0.10
Still much lower than regular adult chicken which is 0.27% - maybe you could add some binders?

I wish I could advise sweetie, but I've no experience with IBD, or its relation to CRF and HT

I would have thought dry food on its own would not be good for kidneys, but not sure of wet foods which would not irritate IBD.

Best food for a cat with IBD, CRF and HT?
« Reply #1 on: July 22, 2009, 15:42:15 PM »
Phoebe was diagnosed with IBD yesterday so now she has all three :( She has been on R/C sensitivity dry and wet but now the vet thinks is best to give her only dry and not mix the wet and dry because one is fish and the other ck  :-: I would like her to have wet food aswell so i am thinking of dd hills diet which is Venison&Greenpea. I know its the best for IBD but is it good for cats with CRF too ? I really appreciate some advise on this, also can I still give her raw meat because thats how i can get her to take tablets .

The other thing i want to know is steroid safe for cats with HT and CRF?
 :thanks:
