Hi, if the ulcer is herpes related, you can try some (v expensive though) anti viral drops but they have to be ordered from Moorfield's. I got some for Swampy but they irritated his eye, which was disappointing as they kill herpes.
I'd say that you should probably ask for some antibiotic ointment like choloromycetin or the less broad-spectrum fucithalmic if the eye is still running and not looking good.
As I'm sure you know, the only way you can tell if the ulcer's gone is by doing that dye test with the strip thing and then looking with a bright, UV light.

Hello everyone, just thought I would update this post and ask for a bit of advice really if anyone can help. Saw the vets last 10 days ago, (was a different vet). He said Jacks eye looked much better, swelling all gone and the ulcer had healed. But he did have some like dots/speckles on his eye still. But the vet said nothing to worry about and said didnt need to see him again unless things got worse. Anyway 10 days on his looks exactly the same. The dots are still there and his eye is still runny at times. I am just looking for reassurance really that this is normal? The dots on his eye couldnt be an ulcer can it? Is it maybe some sort of scarring? I really do not know much about herpes. I know it can be a slow healing process so I am unsure whether I should talk to the vet again so soon, am I expecting to much to soon sort of thing! Its just the marks on his eye worry me and am unsure whether its actually problematic or not. Cheers if anyone can help

My sister will be. She comes by twice a day to feed them, and spend time with them, and she often stays over as she hasnt got her own place. I am just worried about if hes still on medication, whether it is wise to leave her to handle it. In the worst case scenario as long as he is in good health I will go away and put them in the cattery or use the local pet care at home service. I am just hoping he will be off the drops by then.

Helllo everyone. almost 3 weeks in and Jacks eye is finally looking lots better. The swelling has almost gone, just a little left on his third eyelid and the eye is a lot better. Vet said collar could come off and I could let him outside again so I did. Eye hasnt got any worse since then, but the ulcer on it isnt healing very fast. I know it can be a long process but should it be healing by now?

They definitly think it is herpes but havnt actually ran any swabs yet to confirm, think they will do this when go back monday. I am due to go away in 5 weeks, and although this seems far away I am worrying if the ulcer doesnt heal what I will do. Should he be kept inside with his e-collar on to ensure his eye cannot become more irritated? I am just worrying about how long it might be until his ulcer heals and hes back to normal.

Thanks for that, I was worried about taking it off. But I did and got it back on with all if my fingers in tact! I have had to move all my breakable objects because he keeps bumping into them, just hoping he gets used to it a bit more, I dare not leave him at the mo! Am dreading more days like this

Seriously, it wont hurt to take it off for mealtimes

My Bridge-babe Gizmo had a collar to stop him taking stictches out of his rear end. (He had to have his tail amputated ) No-one told me it was OK to take the collar off and I rang the vet because poor Giz couldnt manage the food bowl. They said it was fine to take it off now and again provided I kept an eye on him.

They do get used to the collars quite quickly

Just got back from the vets, Jack is being prescribed some eye drops, think its anti viral for herpes infection, and going back for next 3 days for injection metacam. He has had one of those collars put on to stop him washing his eye! Bless him hes going mad, bumping into things and walking backwards. He cant eat or drink from his bowl when its on, he cannot get to it. Any ideas?! What can I do for meal times?

Make a cup of black tea using the camomile teabag, allow to cool, use cotton wool dipped in the tea to bathe.
Really safest to ring vet for advice.

No I didnt try the camomille tea as things seemed to be getting better but I will do. Do I use the tea bag, dipped in hot water and left to cool, and put that on his eye?

Hi Michelle,

Poor kitty, it's difficult to say really but if the eye seems to be getting worse despite the medication I'd give your vet a ring and explain. Maybe something in the ointment your cat is allergic to or your cat needs treating with something else. Hope you can sort it soon

Sorry to hear you are still struggling with Jacks eye.
You really do need to get the Aureomycin into the eye to do any good; would suggest you bathe eye until you can open it,get cream inside and maybe 10 minutes later bathe surplus cream from outside of eye. Have you tried the camomile tea yet ? this has saved many a poor cat from losing an eye.
If you are really worried ring vet today,they will give advice over phone.

Thanks for everyones replies before. I took Jack back to the vets on monday as eye seemed to be getting worse. They sedated him and had a deeper poke around, and couldnt find anything in the eye. Told to carry on with the Aureomycin, and he was also prescribed an anti biotic tablet for his sniffles (cannot remember name) and metacam. Took him back for follow up on thurs and they eye was looking much better. Swelling had gone down, the third eyelid was still quite visable but generally things had improved. Told to go back again monday, if not healed may need to do biopsies and stuff

Last night things just seemed to go backwards and his eye looked really bad again. Lots of runny clear pus again. Swelling quite bad again. His eye keeps sticking together. When I do bathe it and get it open, and open his eye ready for the Aureomycin, I can not see any of his actual eyeball. The lids seem very bulgy and swollen. Hes now not opening it atall. Im just really worried and have no idea what this can be. I am carrying on with the Aureomycin ointment and putting it in his eye anyway, is this ok to do, considering its going onto his lids not the eye itself? Could it be the ointment which is making his eye sticky and sticking it together? I just wonder as the pus in runny and clear and sticking was not a problem earlier on in the week. Sorry for the ramble just worry about him, hes not himslef at all, so quiet

Can you get hold of any camomile teabags ? made into black tea and cooled they are wonderful for relieving swelling and really do soothe. Usually aureomycin is good because it contains oxytet (antibiotic)

Thank you for that. Hes on Aureomycin but I havnt done it the last few hours. Problem now is I can barely see his eye. His lower eyelid is swollen and bulgy, and his third eyelid is half way across his eye. It also looks swollen and a bit bumpy in places. Thats the best I can describe. So the Aureomycin cream wont do him any worse? Was having trouble getting it in as when I opened his eye all I could see was the 3 eyelids covering the eye. Quite worried he is so quiet, and sneezy too. A few mins ago he went to wash his eye, and he just went at it really hard and annoyed almost. Like it was really hurting/bothering him.

Bathe his eye until you can gently open it otherwise it will refill with puss; camomile tea is excellent fror reducing inflamation but cooled boiled water is fine, when bathing eye 1 piece of cotton wool per wipe. What cream has vet prescribed Fucithalmic or Aureomycin ? If its Fucithalmic dont use anymore until you see vet in morning, if its Aureomycin get some in.
Sorry for not putting this very carefully but a bit poorly at present.

He could have a cold, vaccinating doesnt prevent illness 100% but makes it milder.
I would get him to the vets tomorrow as a precaution, if he has a high temp that can be sorted out and he will feel alot better

Hello again. As of this morning I thought Jacks eye was looking a bit better. Went of shopping today and now I am back I think its looking worse. Seems to be running a lot again, and seems very closed. He wont open it. No idea how I might get any of the ointment in now. He also seems be be sneezing a bit. I will take him back to the vet tommorow but just wondered if any one had and thoughts or advice? He is vaccinated, but I know runny eyes and sneezes can be a symptom of cat flu. I am also considering the idea that maybe it wasnt an infection that started it, can trauma or a knock to the eye cause this too? I know the vet looked and said nothing was in the eye, but I noticed last night the back pads on his front paws are grazed and freshly scabby. Thanks for all the comments, I am a first time cat owner, so still learning really, and I know it must be really bothering him, as he is such a cuddly but at the same time loud and playful cat. He hasnt eaten as much today and is just curled up quietly on his own. Even when I go near him he just ignores me, although that maybe because he thinks I have the dreaded eye ointment!

I am sure it will be fine if he cleans his eye, just make sure you get the ointment right into the eye so he cant wash it all off, I think you would have an impossible task trying to stop him washing it, cats naturally use saliva to heal and he will keep washing it

Jacks home, hes ok. No foreign body in his eye, just a nasty infection. Have got some ointment to put in his eye, that will be fun! If no better by monday have to take him back, but fingers crossed it will clear up. Hes not upset with me, just wanted lots of cuddles, so im happy!

took Jack to the vets. Once they examined the eye they said that underneath was very swollen and pussy. Had to leave him there, so they can put local anesthetic in his eye, and have a further play around. Poor thing I hate leaving him. They are going to phone me in a while. So glad I got my car back and went in today, considering it didnt look to bad on the surface.

my bengal has had eye drops three times this year! she has over the top big eyes which seem to always end up with something in them, she scratched herself once! usually after the first lot of drops it starts to look better, I just worry that eyes are something you can't take chances with - good luck for 3!

Hi thanks for the replies. Popped out for and hour and half after I posted, got back and its looking a bit worse. More closed, and red, and the underneath eye bits are starting to come onto the eyelid. Dont know the trechnical term! So got him booked in to see the vet at 3. Just hope hes ok. Dreading taking him though, he hates his box and the vets!

I agree a vet visit would be prudent, if not today, then tomorrow morning.

It may be a bit of dust or something which has irritated his eye, but it could also be a scratch which would need drops.

Bathing in cooled boiled water is a good idea.

One of my cats had a bad eye the other day, I spoke to the vet and he said bathe it with a salt water solution and see how it goes, my only worry would be it is Friday today and you will only really have Saturday morning to get to the vets, if it was me I would make an appointment for tomorrow morning, if it is OK by tomorrow cancel the appointment or if it gets worse today then you will need to get to the vet x

the problem is if it is a scratch and not an infection, they can turn nasty pretty quickly and get ulcerated - can you get the garage to speed things up with the car?

I noticed my cats eye looked a bit wet yesterday evening. He usually gets a lot of sleepy gunk anyway so wasnt to concerened decided just to wait and look today. Anyway its sort of weeping now, only clear fluid and hes keeping it a bit closed. I know eye infections can be common in cats. Is it essential I take him to the vet straight away? Could I try bathing it first with something and see how I get on? I only ask as car is in for its MOT today so would be a bit of a pain trying to get to the vets! He seems fine and is eating and drinking and cuddling like normal. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I also have another cat, shes fine, but can eye infections be spread easily between cats? Thanks
