Sam (RIP) had to be Sam because all the kittens  in the litter were called after hobbits (Samwise).

Liquorice (RIP) was called Liquorice because I saw the name Peter Liquorice on the credits of a TV programme and I thought that Liquorice would be great name for a black cat. So when I found a black kitten, she had to be Liquorice.

'Black' and 'Decker' (RIP) were the two black kittens in a litter, named before I got them. I changed Black to Blacken.

Nike was called Nike by the children in the house where she was born because she had a black tick on her face, over one eye. That meant I had to come up with a name to go with Nike for her littermate. As Nike is the goddess of victory I called the other kitten Minerva, or Mini.

Willow (RIP) came as an adult from a firend and remained Willow.

When I told my mum I was going to pick up a new black female kitten she said 'You should called her Mitzi after Mitzi Gaynor' so that was that and Mitzi was Mitzi. When we came away with another, truly gorgeous, male kitten as well we decided that he also had to be named after an actor, so he was named Flynn (after Errol Flynn).

So other people named six out of my nine cats and I named two of the others to pair up with ones other people had named. Liquorice was the only name I chose myself without constraints!

My 3 have "normal" names for vets visits - Tilly, Kitty and Lucy... but at home they have a wide range of nicknames. Tilly only answers to her proper name, Kitty answers to either Kitty or skicky... and poor Lucy doesn't answer to her name, she only answers to loopy!.  ;)

Tilly becomes Tilly-tops, Tills
Kitty becomes Skittles, skitzy Bits, Skicky
Lucy becomes Loopy Loo

When ginger boy joined us in Feb he had been called Scamp in the rescue. I really didn't like that so for a couple of days he became ginge then we came up with Frankie.
So now he gets Frank, Frankie and Fwanks. :evillaugh:

When 3 of my 4 kittens died, I called the remaing one Merlin, because he needed witchcraft to stay alive. It didn't help, he died anyway  :'(

Oh I am so sorry to hear that,  must have been awful for you

When the kittens came to us they were called Merlin (because he was so black) and Bubbles (because he liked to sleep on a roll of bubble wrap) which we changed to Basil and Baxter. I think Basil really suits his name, I really feel like Sybil Fawlty everytime I say "Oh Basil what have you done now". He's always crashing about the place and can't do even a simple task without causing mayhem (he doesn't jump onto the couch from the front oh no he has to go behind and climb up the back even though the couch is against a wall).

Garfield and Charley we adopted when they were older, as both of them answered to their names we kept them, even though Garfield wouldn't be my first choice of a name. I just tend to call him Garf or Garfie (as in my little garfie cuddles). Charley suits his name, esp as we usually shorten it to Chunk (from the goonies), considering he weighs in at about 7kg it's very apt!

Capone used to be Buster. We named him Capone because it sounds very husky-wolfy (he kind of looks like a wolf). Then we put Owl, infront of Capone because he sometimes looks like an Owl.

Owl Capone. Absolutely nothing to do with Al Capone, btw.  :evillaugh:

My girlies had different names at the rescue, they were Mitzie and Nana - Now Mitzie I didn't mind... but Nana.

So I changed them to Amber and Chilli, Chilli is a total nutcase so I guess I got her right. And Amber was obvious because of her dark orange/red colouring and dark orange eyes.

We had decied on Jerry before he arrived(and it suits him perfectly!) Gizmo was named on sight almost - and a right little Gremlin he is too!  :evillaugh:

Beavis on account of his red hair - and Fredcat was slang for a stray , as in 'Beavis , go and chase that Fredcat off' and it stuck. He wont answer to anything else now! :Luv2:

Samson doesn't really answer to his name.  We're considering changing it as my name is Sam too but we're going to see whether he reacts to it any more over the next few weeks.  If not, then we'll either change it to something more 'him' although I don't know what!

Jess came as Jess, and in hindsight I wish we'd changed it as everyone thinks his a girl, but its ironic after all the bladder problems his had, and at times he can be a bit of a wuss so Jess is quite appropriate really.
My nickname for Jess is Bubba and the vets even called him that before

Milo seems to suit Milo though, wouldn't have been my choice but Hubby would only allow us to have a another cat if he could name them - was a small price to pay really.

When I had Yagga at the vets the nurse asked his name and I replied "Yagga Yak Yak" a look of relief came over her when I told her she could write down Jack for short!  :evillaugh:

Now obviously Yakerty Yak (SP?) is his song!  :evillaugh:

I name my cats quite quickly, then I give them all nick names that stick! I always sing silly tunes to them incorporating there names and thats where the nick names come in!  :innocent:

I always sing silly songs to my lot as well,   unfortunately all the silly names are not nicknames for my lot,  they are actual 'vet' names

Don't you think it's funny that we seem to give the right names to our pets?

After a while you can't imagine any other name on that particular pet.
Like my Golden, Muffin, well, she's a piece of cake really.
Now when Fairy had kittens, I called the first one Feliz, (luck) because the first litter had died. The black boy, I called Fergus, because I went on with F and I had read the name once in a book about cats.
Now Fergus is a real Fergus, cannot imagine him being called anything else, fits him like a glove  ;D

I made 1 mistake, I wanted to call my half siamese Farah, but my son didn't like that, so she became Fairy, but...she became a real witch  >:(
