Sorry just seen this. It is not uncommon for mums to exhibit this kind of behaviour when they know something is wrong with the kitten. It is there wasy of culling and it allows the queen to save her reserves for those kittens that have a better chance of survival.

One of my foster queens last year did this with one of the litter and it tunred out he was a bit of a slow developer and was still crawling along a good 10 days or so after the rest of the litter had found their feet and were running around.

The little one did survive and is now a happy healthy little man in his new home, but mum obviously felt something was wrong.

Either way it is still heart breaking when we see what is a natural process so close to us.

RIP little man.

Cassie is now feeling a lot better and we have managed to get rid of the excess milk, i have been taking each kitten and putting them on the 2 teats that was above the lump as the vet suggested and im happy to say that its gone down considerably, all the kittens except the little one are gaining weight, but the little one is still giving cause for concern, hes having extra feeds but still is only half the size of the others, the vet says he is okay but im not sure will continue to monitor him closely, i also have some misgivings about the little brindle girl, think there could possibly be some brain damage as she seems very slow and dopey not bright like the other 2, she was the one who was breech, so again is being monitored as it may just be me worrying to much

No 4 is the little one causing concern

Right back from the vets, evidently she is producing to much milk and this is building up, she has been given painkillers and i have to try and put kittens on 3 particular teats to try and drain some off also i have to try and express some of the milk :

and she has to go back on monday, all the kittens have been checked over and they are fine including the little one whose had 2 really good feeds off mum this morning, so all we have to do now is hope that it doesnt turn into mastitus, fingers crossed

Seems i was right to be worried, ive been checking Cassie every day and also when ive put little one on her to feed, this morning she has a long hard flat lump underneath her, may be wrong but to me it feels liks another kiitten still inside, the lump wasnt there yesterday just came up overnight, shes going to the vets at 11.30 with the small kitten, fingers crossed for her

Last night she was on the floor sitting at the side of me having a fuss so i got the little one and put him to her and he had a really good feed so i think it may be that the bigger ones are pushing him out, im going to supplement his feeds and keep an eye on her with him and see how things go,hopefully its just me being a worry bum

If she is still feeding the kittens, I think you only need to supplement feed them so even if you only get 2/3ml in them it will help. Lactol Gold for kittens is the one to get from Pets at Home and that can also be mixed up and kept in the fridge.

Her anxiousness with her kittens may be due to her instincts telling her to move them , as this is what mums do in the wild. I would keep a very close eye on her and make sure the babies don't get too cold if she is leaving them - cold kills just as easily as not eating enough.

I would also put food and water for Mumy either very close to where she has the kittens or in with the kittens and move her litter tray closer (but obviously not too close) so she spends less time away from them when she goes to eat/drink/use the toilet.

I use Cimicat (http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/prodinfo.asp?number=9020736&variation=) milk for kittens, it has the advantage that you can make it up and store it in the fridge so I make however much I will need for overnight up before I go to bed so then in the night I just ned to measure out what I need and then warm it up. RC (don't know about Lactol) you have to make up fresh each time which in the middle of the night when you are half asleep isn't easy especially when kittens are tiny and you need to feed them every 2 hours.

I wonder if she is coming into season and that is why she isn't bothered as much by them. You can get LActol Gold from Pets at Home, which I think Lesley recommended, or you could ask your vets for some. The person at my HQ likes RC Babymilk due to the bottles it comes with.

She seems to be feeding 3 of them but seems to be rejecting one, i have just put him on her and she let him feed while i was there but as soon as i move she pushes him away, and when the others start to wimper she just looks at them, she seems to want to go out of the room, i have let her wander upsatirs for a while when the others are out but all she does it sit at the window,i think i may have to supplement the little ones food intake, what is best for this as i have no idea

We have only dealt with this once, but Kizzy was worse wtih her kittens, she clearly had no maternal instincts at all, we actually had to split them at just over 2 weeks old just so no more babies died (2 had already died before we got them), but hopefully it wont come to that with yours.

Sorry no advice hear but if you think she is doing damage then I think you need to get vet advise.

I am sure that if it can wait until everyone wakes up someone with knowledge would be able to help with advice

Oh I can see why you would be concern. I am currently fostering two sets of kittens and their mums but I have not encountered this biting problem. As far as Cassie spending quite a bit of time away from the kittens, have you tried putting her food dish in with her and the kittens? Maybe that might encourage her to lay with her kittens if she is given her meals bedside? I did this for my Momma Cat #1 when another member suggested it, I think it was dabs, anyway it worked great! I now am doing the same thing with Momma Cat #2. Also, it's a good idea to weigh the kittens daily just to make sure they are getting enough nutrients and that Mummy Cat is not staying away for to long that she is neglecting her feeding chores.

Im a little bit concerned about the behaviour of Cassie the little cat im looking after for the young girl, as you know she had 4 kittens last monday morning, all the kittens seemed to be thriving and putting on weight well, but ive noticed over the last 2 days Cassie is spending quite a bit of time away from the kittens and tonight she seemed to be biting the smallest one , and i dont just mean small bites, like putting the kittens head in her mouth and holding it down with her paw, ive had to stop her twice from doing this , she also is very rough with one of the bigger ones when cleaning it,not quite nasty but bordering, doesanyone have any ideas please
