Thanks ever so much for all your help, Ela - Benji's now back out on the prowl and very cheerful with it, and the girls are booked in for tomorrow (was going to be today but unfortunately my assistant this morning let herself in and went zooming straight through and fed everybody before I had a chance to say not to  ).

I will go for the older option  as I can't say about the wiser. and agree with your decision.

Benji says that he's all better and would like to go back out on the prowl now... I think I'll hang onto him till bedtime and then pop him back round to his mums so he can spend the night in his own house and then go out in the morning with his buddies.

Good luck Becca, bet he doesnt sulk that long though, Finn didn't, and he had an undescended testicle. The main prob you are going to have is the smell, but he should be fine after a couple of days, but at the absolute most you will only need to have him 7-10 days,

You are more than welcome, one of my main aims in life is to get everying on four legs neutered/spayed

I am amazed at the number of people who still don’t realise that indoor cats need neutering and spaying. In toms it helps prevent prostrate & testicular cancer also enlargement of the prostrate and related infections. Females Cats if spayed will not acquire pyometra a life threatening infection & every time a cat comes into season her chances of mammary tumours (breast cancer) increases. Ovarian, Uterine cancer is also prevented.

I've got the neighbour's 9 month old kitten spending the duration of his recovery in my spare room; they're chocka next door and haven't really got the space or the... er... organised-ness to keep him in till it's all better. Many thanks to Auntie Ela for the neutering voucher, I'm sure Benji will be very grateful when he's finished sulking 

His sister appears to have left home - no sign of her at all so hopefully she's found another family to look after her - I'll be keeping an eye out for her, though.
