Well, he has gained weight and is his heaviest at 3.9kg, and I know he has lost some of the weight he gained since his last visit. Just so odd that he can put it on so well, but seems unable to maintain it. Mouth is still red at the back, but nowhere near as bad as last month, and she doesnt' want to put him on another course of Antirobe just yet, especially as it hasn't stopped him eating or playing, so she has put a note on his file that I can have Antirobe or Metacam at any point in the next 3 months if he either goes off his food or there starts to be a smell. I still think I will have his bloods re-done next month and take it from there - his liver values were a lot better on his last bloods, so the bulk of those were infection related, but I would be interested in his thyroid levels, as he was bang on the top end of normal and with other people's posts on this, maybe he should already be on meds. Vet did say she thinks he would be very hard to home as his mouth does look like it will be a long term issue, but we have already taken all his teeth out, he is refusing Classic cat food and it would cost a lot to feed him Applaws with his appetite. Anti-viral therapy is the next course, but that is very expensive and not guaranteed to work. He is currently on Serene-um as well, in case that helps, as stress can flare up. She also said his weepy eyes could be herpes as well, his mouth could be calici. I am not convinved as he shares a water bowl with Kizzy, and last night they were swapping food bowls and she is fine.

Thanks.
Sam's weigh in is tomorrow, he appears to have dropped all the weight he put on while he was on cat milk though, so I suspect his thyroid is a problem = he can gain weight really quickly, but can't maintain it. Will have to see what the vet thinks about it, and whether it could be his liver rather than his thyroid.

Your welcome PAv. Sorry to hear they have had to increase his steroids, I would just keep an eye on him for diabetes like symptoms.
Thank you very much for the treats etc, I hope they will take it. Managed to get half a spoon of Serene-Um into Sam and Kizzy's food last night. Fundraising went very well, the final count hasn't been done, but it is looking like over £700 for the weekend.

Thanks Desley, with Boy they just increased the steroid dose , because in last two episode he had the large dose of steroid injection worked so
He was on 1 tab once a day now is twice a day :( I was concerned about this but the vet said if it was a long term then there would be concern about his liver and other things but they dont think Boy has long left so the higher dose is just to keep him comfortable and hopefuly helps with the condition.
I will send you the complederm with the treats, the vet said its really good for dry skin. I hope Zia doesnt mind the taste ;)
So glad the fundraising went well ;D
 :thanks: x

I am sorry Phoebe is no better Pav, but glad Boy got over his episode. Serene-um says it can only be used for a month after opening. I could probably use the Compalderm, Zi does have dry skin, Sam's is a bit greasy at present. No cats with kidney issues at present, although Sam's bloods are due - I think something has gotten a bit worse, but his is likely to be liver rather than kidney. Fundraising went really well, we didn't count up as it is a full weekend do, but I reckon we got between £300 and £400.

I dont mind you posting on Sam's thread, I am just glad to hear from you.

Sorry to hear about your back Pat  Byron was sat with me and I was cuddling her and she really trembles sometimes and it got me wondering how Phoebe was, and Boy.  I wondered whether you were busy at work or gone on holiday.  Glad the acupuncture is helping
Thanks Janey  Phoebe is worse now and i spoke to the vet last week , and he said he likes to see her because if its muscle twitching the way i explained to him it could be neurological  :scared: ( She does tremble as well like Byron , i think its to do with age)
As for work, no i haven't been working since January, there were some changes in the company and is long story so no work atm! Holiday ;D I wish but i cant leave Phoebe with any one she needs to take 5 tablets a day and its a struggle getting her to take them so i cant trust or expect any one to be patient and brave enough to do it :evil laugh:

Sorry Desley for posting this on Sams tread.

Aww thanks Desley and Janey.  I have been having problems and lots of pain with my back and at the same time Boy started having the vestibular syndrom again :( He is ok now and i am having accupunture so a bit better.
Desley the reason i asked is i wanted to give the seren-um to a rescue but wasnt sure if after a year is still good or not! I also have Renalzin which got for Phoebe last week but she wont eat the food if i add renalzin to it and a bottle of Complederm , which i used a tea spoon i got it for her coat cos she has so much dandraff. So was wondering if you have any cats in your care which can use Renalzin and Complederm?

How did the fundraising go ? I have some treats for Kizzy and Sam which will send to you next week.

They do BM, but he wont take tablets, the vet gave me some for Kizzy and I had to crush them, so thought this would be easier than crushing tablets every day.

Thanks everyone - I tried him and Kizzy on Serene-Um yesterday and he hardly ate any wet food and didn't even touch much of his dry overnight, so hopefully it was just the bitter taste (yes, I did try it!!) and he will eat more today. He isn't going to be happy today as I am fundraising so he will have to stay in all day

Well, he has just finished his second course of Antirobe, his mouth is miles better, but still slightly red. i am not going to ask for more, as his monthly check up is next week. he has definitely put weight on, but that might drop quickly cos he wont be having two plates of cat milk a day!! I have started measuring out his biscuits and giving him a limited amount a day, and mixed some mature biscuits with the adult, so hopefully that will help control his weight. Fingers crossed he doesn't need his bloods doing next week.

Thanks - he is a tad quiet again this morning in that he doesn't want to go out much, and he was quite restless last night, but more in that he would only lie somewhere for so long before moving, I wonder if that is a sign his thyroid levels are going up. I hope they will give me ab's without seeing him again, and that a second course work, although 8 days was a long course to start with.

Well, Sam has just finished his ab's, he was reluctant for me to look at his mouth, so when my sis was here, I got her to hold him - the side he really wont let me look at doesn't look too bad (althoguh still red), yet the side he will let me look at is the worst, so 8 days of Antirobe hasn't fully cleared it. My vet is on holiday for another week though, and as much as she said the locum was nice, I dont really want to see another vet, as she wont know what he was like before. i will ring and see if she will give some more ab's just until my normal vet is back though, and if not, I will wait - it hasn't stopped him eating or chewing the new fishing rod toy, certainly hasn't stopped him picking on other cats (I tried to stop him this morning so he sprayed on the banister to distract me from grounding him!!). He has been a bit quiet since then, but only in that he has been content to lie on the floor rather than go outside, he had a really energetic play session, never seen him flip so well in the air, and some nice cuddles. He has defintely put weight on, so now i just need to figure out a mix to maintain him, as I think he is a good weight now, so hopefully we can hold off his bloods for another 2 months. I think i am going to permanently take him off the rehoming list, I dont think I would trust anyone to keep an eye on him, as he shows no signs whatsoever of things bothering him, I can't imagine eating the amount he has this week (nearly 500g of biscuits, plus wet food and cat milk) with such an inflamed mouth.

I am tempted to do the test (as the calici test isn't overly expensive) just in case it is something else, but we have taken all his teeth out, so his teeth cant' irritate him anymore. Classic cat food is made by Butchers, it is actually cheaper than Whiskas, but he is fussy with it - I think it might be the grain free that helps. Applaws can also be used, but obviously that is a lot more expensive, and i have him on JWB with it being hypoallergenic, although just readin my previous sentence, I might get some more Applaws to try him on, as that is grain free (although dont know what i would then do with the 8kg of food I already have for him!!).

Poor boy, I see what you mean though about the testing and it sounds as though you're doing all you can for him.  Is Classic cat food a special type?

Jane - we suspect he has calici, which is causing the mouth ulcers, the problem is that we could test him, but it is what we do after that - the 'easy' things are feeding him Classic cat food (which I have plenty of, and he loved it at first, but now wont touch), Metacam for the pain and inflammation (but his liver values are high, so we have to watch Metacam with him), then there is Interferon treatment which is mega expensive - and to be honest, he seems to cope really well, he had a small dose of Metacam after his dental, and he has had one dose since then, he hasn't appeared to need any since.
BM - I wouldnt say he favoured one over the other really, the reason I restricted his dry was he put 400g in one month on, so he had got to a good weight and I didn't want him to put that amount of weight on in another month. Unfortunately he has lost most of that now, so if increasing it doesn't work, he will have his thyroid checked next month, and if it does (I think it will, as he will also be on cat milk for the next 8 days for his ab's), his bloods will be done in 2 months, as I Want him on 6 monthly bloods because of his thyroid and liver levels.
I am actually glad that i didn't put him on the rehoming list, as he has shown no signs of his mouth being so bad, so if a new owner hadn't seen the need for regular mouth checks, it could have got a lot more severe before being picked up on.

Poor Sam it's awful when their mouths are sore Schui suffered awful with his when we first adopted him, that won't help his eating either.  Glad that he is looking and appearing well though.  Hopefully his mouth will be helped with the abs, why has got ulcers do you know?

Well, he had pulled the scab off, so the vet didn't properly see it, so that is jsut a monitoring case. I have bought suncream for him and Kizzy, which was fun. The worrying part was his mouth, I knew it was looking a bit red, but I hadn't seen the severe ulcers at the back of his mouth - he hasn't stopped eating, playing, wanting fuss or having standoffs with the neighbours cat, so I am going to have to get his mouth checked monthly by the vet. He is on 8 days worth of ab's, no Metacam at the moment, as he can only have limited amounts due to his liver, so as he is showing no signs of it affecting him (the first comment everyone makes on him is how well he looks, his fur is nice, even the vet was surprised with how well he looks but yet how bad his mouth was), we will hold off on that. He has lost weight again, I am going to adjust his food first, as he has consistently lost since I took him off an unlimited supply of adult dry (cos he put on so much weight in one month), and if he hasn't gained at his next weigh in, we will recheck his thyroid.
