I received a nice vet bill today for the out of hours call out but to soften the blow a nice letter which has made me know I made the right decision., the vet wrote:- I would like to take the opportunity to reassure you that euthanasia was definitely the best course of action for this kitten. His bladder had been completely obstructed for at least 24 hours and he had been vomiting for over 12 hours (probably as a result of secondary kidney failure) and I believe that had gone beyond medical help and it would have been inhumane to try treatment regardless of any cost issues.

I have today sent the owner a full cost voucher to have mum spayed. lets hope she bothers.

Poor Kitty, Ela I am sure you did the right thing but it doesn't make it any easier I'm sure.

isn't litter eating a sign of severe anaemia? I wonder if the whole litter was riddled with fleas :(

I can imagine just how upsetting it must be at times but you know you did all you could Ela and had to help little kitten be free from pain.

RIP little one x

The bottom line is a kitten was suffering and that takes precedence over anything else.

People should not breed unless they know what they are getting into, and know the possible outcomes! And also have the cash to sort any sick kittens out!

Maybe they can pay the vets bill with the xx hundreds they make off the rest of the litter  >:(

Sorry Ela, I know you wouldn't authorise PTS unless it was in a cat's interest but I'm sure it doesn't make it any easier

I am very upset only last night someone rang about 6.40 p.m. (not from our area but could not get hold of anyone else) to say a cat had kittens and one of them was not very well as it had eaten some litter. I advised them to contact a vet and they needed to act quickly as most vets close at 7 p.m.  They said they had no money so I said ask the vet to ring me.
At 9.40 p.m. a vet rang me to say someone had just contacted him about a sick kitten  and advised him I would pay. I confirmed that if he was prepared to see the kitten we would pay, and asked him to phone me once the kitten was there. 20 mins later he contacted me and said the 8 week old kitten (I was initially advised by the owners dad it was 1 week old but had asked how a one week old could eat litter, but that is another story) was very ill had been so all day had blocked tubes and was suffering and screaming in pain, (I could hear it). I asked if the kindest thing was PTS he said yes, I then said if something could be done no matter the cost we would pay and did not want it PTS just because it was the cheapest option. He said I could try something but it will cost hundreds and you will probably end up with a dead kitten and again said the kitten is suffering. Reluctantly I authorised PTS. I feel terrible, I will once I get the bill and the owners address send her a free voucher to have mum spayed, hopefully she will.

Not my week as the day before I asked  someone who had found a cat to take it to our vets, within minutes I received a phone call from the vet and I had to authorise PTS as the little one had a broken back.
