Glad Ollie is getting better. Not sure that Metacam can be used long-term. I think they do with older cats but AFAIK, it does compromise kidneys over time.

Argh just wrote a post and lost it!

Yes he was weighed, now weighs 4.2kg, he was 4.3kg about a month ago.

Im going to opt out of the hormones and ask for metcam.

All is well for the moment

Good news you have had a positive check up

I would also opt for metacam over any hormone treatment as a first test of a new treatment plan, great thats hes clicked the steroids arent helping, your getting there!

I am glad that the infection has cleared up, although it seems odd that if there is no infection that he would give you more antibiotics, and am glad he has finally admitted that the steroids are doing more harm, although I would have thought Metacam (anti-inflammatory) would be a better option than hormones - I know they use hormones in spraying toms, but there are some side effects such as mammary cancer, which is why I didn't go down that route with either of my two fosters. There may be some research I dont know about though. Glad the vet doesnt think he is near pts stage though - did you weigh him?

He's got another 10 days worth of the antirobe and I think we may be getting somewhere.

The vet said he doesn't think there is an infection anymore, he said he could even smell it the last time. When I said he has been getting loads of green drool, vet asked if it was while he was on the anti-b's. I said yes mostly and I thought it was drawing the infection out, he said it shouldn't be doing that as he (Ollie) was swallowing it.

So there is no infection and Ive been given another lot of anti-b's.

The vet said they could operate on his mouth but the swelling would make his mouth worse and cause his throat to close over, which would be worse for him. Operate and do what I dont know

He also said after this lot of antibiotics he is going to see how he is and maybe try some hormones AS HE THINKS THE STEROIDS ARE DOING MORE HARM THAN GOOD

Im finally getting somewhere.

And even tho I didnt want to, I had to ask about the pts option.....

..... vet said oh no he's nowhere near that stage, so Im very relieved

So I think we will see whats in store for Ollie and hopefully these hormones will help him. Anyone ever delt with hormones before, giving them to their cat I mean. What kind would they be

I think he aslo said it would be ok to give him the antirobe from time to time if Ollie needs them, seeing so Im getting him to take them.

Now vet has asked me to not give Ollie the antirobe for another couple of days to see if its them giving him the green salava, his mouth seems pretty clean now and the frothy stuff has gone white, he's not had any antirobe since Sunday.

Any thoughts on this?

Byron had a weeks worth and I rang for a second lot because it didn't clear hers up. It still looks dodgey and she could do with some more which I'll probably pick up when I go back. Vet told me to keep hers under control she would be ok to take a course every few weeks or so on repeat prescription as she's old and her last 2 teeth can't be removed they were too far in the jaw.

It didnt go. I went and after a long wait the nurse came out and said my vet was not on today. It was packed and I think someone had just had their dog put to sleep, so I just wanted to get out of there!

My vet is on tomorrow so will be going back then

Still been getting the green around his mouth, its quite a bit and has been leaving long drool. He's at the vets tomorrow so we will see whats said. He will be ok with another course of Antirobe wont he? How long can he be kept on Antirobe if there are no signs of the infection clearing up? Where would I go from here

I suspect it is the steroids that caused it CC, as they lower the immune system and resistance, so they ultimately make mouth issues worse - and as he wasn't on a decent antibiotic, it could be why it has lasted so long, it is probably very deep rooted by now - I had the same with 2 of my fosters, they had a steroid jab and Convenia, and it did nothing, they then had to have Antirobe 2 weeks later to clear it up.

Des, before Christmas we were in the process of weaning him off the steriods, he was getting half a day, then half every other day. This is when things started to go wrong. He's had this infection since Christmas so I have to keep giving him the steriods as it's a matter of keeping him well. As soon as this infection clears up his steriods will be looked at again and we will try to work out how to reduce them again.

You see I dont know if this infection has occured because of reducing the steriods, he was fine for 10 months and hadn't needed any antibiotics during this time. It's when I started reducing the steriods things started getting bad again, so really I dont know if it has been the reduce or not?

He's been ok today, had lots of salava last night, and had to clean his mouth today. It's been quite a lot really just hope it's the infection coming out and not getting worse.

Fingers crossed they work - its a shame the steroid can't be weaned, as I bet he would feel better with an anti-inflammatory than steroid.
Mark - Ollie can't have Metacam because of him being on steroids.

I can understand how you feel we're going through the same right now with Schui, one minute he seems ok then the next he doesn't and it is so hard to know what to do, I'll be having a chat with the vet if Schui continues like this

Have yo asked the vet is he thinks Ollie is in pain? - I haven't read all the posts but if he is, surely he would also be given some Metacam?

MM I only asked for the Antirobe while I was there, there is no way of reducing the steriods atm. Thats something we will look into once this infection has gone.

I dont feel Ollie is doing too good. I think he is loosing weight, which is never a good sign. I really dont know what can be done if this infection doesn't clear up. I feel like Im slowly loosing him. For the most part of his life he has been fighting this constant battle, he was diagnosed at 6 months old. That's a lot for one little cat to go through and I really feel he has been suffering for most of this time, although there have been times he has been really well also.

I just dont know what to do. Sometimes I have thought I am just keeping him here for my own selfish reasons, the reason being I dont want to loose him but then he will get well again and Im left feeling what was the worry for. But seriously tho I dont think in my heart thats he's going to pull through this, not this time. I just have a feeling that the end of his days are coming very soon.

Antirobe is one of the easiest things to hide in food so you may like to tell the vet that

Its much better in food as if the capsule gets stuck it can cause problems.

What was the vets feeling on changing to metacam?

I can't believe your vets reasoning for not using Antirobe, it is such an easy med to get into them, despite the size. Sam's had two full courses in cat milk, and we cant open his mouth unless there is two of us. Fingers crossed it helps, but I definitely rate it in dental issues - jsut a shame Tino got clavaseptin.

Last night after the tablets there was quite a bit of green pussy salava and blood around his mouth, drawing out the infection I think, I hope. He seems ok today, I haven't had to clean his mouth this morning, he just had a milk goatie

Cat milk, that's what Byron's goes into and she drinks it no problem! she has milk every morning but if she has to have 2 a day then she gets a treat a little milk later on, even in a spoonful she will take in dead easy

good luck. In fact i've just been saying she needs a repeat prescription as her tooth is looking off again and he breath smelling and I'll be doing that.
