Best insurance for older cats

I know that Sue (paddysmum) has just moved her dog from petplan to axa cos the 5 that petplan were taking for an excess was crazy.

I think you must have filled something in wrong for Monty and it worth doing a completly new quote and then playing with it..............say start with a younger age, no pre-existing conditions and then gradually bump up the age and if its looking consistant, then add in the pre-existing condition bit.

Make sure you have moggie or equiv in the breed cos pedigrees bump the price up.

Just try testing things to se what happens and report back 

I agree with Rosella that that quote sounds far too high and if there seems to be something going wrong as you test out various quotes then ring them and tell them you have tried doing a quote on their website and there is xyz problem and can they help and am sure they will look at it if you keep the quote reference. Make sure you save the quote.

I've just taken out an Axa policy for Jaffa who will be 12 in June.  It is £11 a month.

Ditto for Alice as a 10 year old

I know premiums are higher in big cities and  "undesirable" areas.

Just wanted to reiterate why I've gone with Axa rather than Petplan coz it is isn't just the relatively low premium when you consider the cover provided for older cats.  It's also the £50 excess rather than excess based on a % of claim. 

When applying for the quote have you confirmed Monty has had usual vaccinations?  £37 per month is incredibly high and as I said, when I applied for cover for our newbies recently, you couldn't apply online and I just rang them and they don't supply quotes over the phone anymore (inconvenient but hopefully keeps premiums down).  Just trying to figure out what info you might have put in to come up with such a high quote.  You don't live next to a zoo with ferocious wild animals that might put Monty in danger by any chance? 

Other thing to mention is initial 14 days of policy does not provide cover for illnesses so you might want to consider what you want to do a couple of weeks before PetPlan cover runs out. 

Apologies if sound like an advert for Axa. They just appear to be best atm but who knows what company will be best in future?

Once we oficially adopt and the pet plan free insurance starts, I shall start making calls for quotes rather than just online. You've all made me a little less worried noe so hopefully the phone quote will be less

Have you thought of ringing axa to find out why the quote was so high?

Really doesn't sound right to me either.  There must be a reason.

I don't understand why it's so high.  pre-existing conditions shouldn't bump up the price as they are simply excluded.  When I took out Jaffa's policy it asked about whether he'd seen a vet for anything other than routine vacs etc and I said yes (he has had a dental, conjunctivitis and a bout of ideopathic cystitis, all of which will be excluded) but they didn't ask for any details.  They will just not be covered in future.

I am paying £16 and £17 for Franta and Ducha who are 15+ pedigrees but no existing condition although Franta now has two serious on going conditions that have happened since the renewal of his insurance. The difference between the two is one had a discount on it.

Must admit that their rates doubled last year but think that was in line with the markets at the time.

We all on Axa have £7000 cover with £50 excess but insurance rates also vary between areas

Just seen on other thread that Monty is about 16?  This is very odd but I just got a quote online from Axa for a 17 year old male with existing conditions (obviously excluded) of less than £20 per month with a £50 excess

i pay around £15 a month for Zi who is nearly 19, but she has no pre-existing conditions, I haven't even looked into it for Sam who does have health issues.

I was paying just over £18 per month with Axa for Thomas until he passed away last September aged almost 19. How old is Monty?

Axa was the first place I looked as I hear such good things about them on here... they want £37 a month!!!  Cause he is old and has existing conditions it has obviously put the price up. I think with my discount, Petplan will definately work out the best and I know I can get insurance with them as my 6 weeks will be extended. Many insurance companies won't start to insure a cat of his age.

I've been doing some online quotes for pet insurance for Monty and am flabergasted at how expensive it is! Most want around £35-£40 a month and to be honest I can't afford that. I will get 6 weeks free petplan insurance with him as he's a cp cat and think at the mo it looks like I will end up continuing with the Petplan case that's going to be around £15 a month but like all CP volunteers I get 20% off of all petplan insurance so that will take that down. They will only do their Value insurance range for an older cat which is up to 7000 per condition but that will probably do for dear old Monty.
