Janey, I didn't want to mention before, but Martha had a bad reaction after an anabolic a couple of years ago - vet told me afterwards this does happen to 1 in 50.  She did have her annual booster (incl FELv) at the same time - so we will never know if it was this, the steroid or the combination of the two, but I haven't allowed either since, only a course of corticosteroids.

I've had great difficulty in getting Metoo to eat, he seems to live on thin air and a few RC renal dry biccies.  BUT, I have found success liquidising a RC renal pouch (I normally add 50-75ml water as well) which he will lap.  I bought a cheap hand-held liquidiser from Argos for this purpose.

I do hope that Schui has just had a setback and it's not 'his time' yet.

I am sorry you are having vet probs  cos its hard enough with a sick cat without dumb vets!

I know my vet with Franta, the original one, said that all mneds needed to be short acting till it was sure they were the right ones, which sounded sensible to me.

I hope that Schui likes the ad cos if its now pallative care then my humble opinion is to let them eat what they want and have as happy and relaxing time as possible

Please give Schui some loving thoughts from me

I am on my way to post office now.

Janey please dont send any for Phoebe, i am going to my vet tomorrow to collect some Fortekor and i pick some more a/d.

It did help Phoebe when she stopped eating in October and after few days on a/d she got her appetite back and was back on normal food, i do hope Schui likes it.

I got it wrong, the Hills k/d is the one the vet gave me for the kidney probs which they wouldn't eat, it was the a/d which was prescribed for Byron and she loved it, I did have a tin but must have thrown it as it prob was out of date.

I've just spoken to the receptionist (who knows all about Schui) and unfortunately our vet's not on today so she's leaving messages with the other receptionist and our vet for tomorrow.  She said she doesn't know whether he'll be able to have the shorter acting steroids depends how long this one was for.  She said unfortunately there may not be alot they can do now as it's really just palliative care, which we do know but fingers crossed he either improves or they can xx I had a good cry yesterday  :'(

Thanks Desley, I'm ringing the vets when they open so I'll see what they can suggest we are dubious as to why the other vet gave him this long acting steroid when our vet had told me she'd give him a 2 week one if you remember and it was a different vet we saw and this steroid hasn't done much at all for him.  I hate it when our regular vet isn't on because you never know whether the other vet has done the right thing.

a/d is different from k/d, it is a convelescing food and very few cats can resist it (although the boys can!!). There is also Liquivite from the vets, I haven't had any success, but I know Gillian has, it is a liquid food.

Thanks all,

Pav I've tried the Gourmet one before and he won't eat that and Gill I had some Hills k/d (what's the difference between a/d and k/d?) in which the vet prescribed for Byron after she'd had her teeth out but he won't eat that either.  The only thing he'll have is cat milk :(

I imagine the Zantac could be in stock at the vets but Zentonil probably has to be ordered. It's lots cheaper from the online pet pharmacies or vet UK too. It's SAMe and for a while back there, it was the only thing that worked. All the best

MM I haven't tried liquidising the food he only eats supermeat but likes really sloppy food so I could try making it even more more runny atm he's only really having cat milk, he ate a little bit yesterday but just milk today so far.

Kate would the vet be able to give me those if so I could ask tomorrow?

sorry that he's not eating much. Have you tried Pepcid (if he's allowed 1/4 tablet a day) or Zantac, or else Zentonil? It's a liver supplement but I found that it can boost appetite. It got Swampy eating when he had nausea from his liver disease. Works best on an empty tum. Then leave it an hour or 2 and try.

It may have been although he's not anaemic she said it was to try and build his muscles as he has alot of muscle wastage, she said his body may not respond but it won't harm if it doesn't.  The tablets weren't mentioned so I think our vet must have had a rethink she said she wasn't sure he would respond last time but because he did had decided to try this one which lasts for 6 wks, it may last 4 or less but if it lasts that long it is good and may even last longer she said it's hard to tell.  So it's just wait and see really and keep fingers crossed

was it laurabolin? (the anabolic steroid). It's supposed to help anaemia. I hope the steroid (ordinary one) works for Schui. I've found that daily or 36 hourly prednisone tablets worked more consistently with Swampy than the jabs (and you can vary the dose quite safely), but I hope you can sort out what really works for Schui to keep him comfy and with as good a quality of life as possible

thanks  the vet said it is so hard to tell how he'll respond and Schui has bounced back so many times so we'll stay positive.
This steroid is supposed to last 6 wks, not 2 like she said on the phone and she never mentioned tablets so must have changed her mind.
