I have now had a bite to eat and some orqnge juice and need to wind down before I make that trip again tomorrow.I will start the long story from the beginning.

Rachel spoke to Bristol and they have no MRI machine like I said. She also discussed Franta with them and suspect the treatment is advised by them. The idea is to try him on a different antibiotic , one that gets into the brain but on 24 hour injections incase they are wrong for him, if they help then he will move onto longer term injections.

Depending onhow thes ABs work he may be put on steroids on the same basis because it will all be trial and error, She wrote everything down for me but its at the emergency vet at present.

He had 3 attacks at the vets but 20 mins apart and suspect most or even all were not full attacks like he had in the car. However she has seen them and suspect also Richard who is the head Honcho.

They took blood from him and took blood pressure and also examined both ears and also his retinas. Richard has seen a patch on one retina that hadnt been noticed, cant remember its name, its on that paper! This is psoosibly cause by an episode of high BP, maybe during one of the attacks and they were goning to put him onto high bp meds but that was very dangerous cos of his kidney and then they found that his bp was still normal like it had been before.

Franta apparently is very hard to treat and his claws and teeth have been felt and nothing hardly can be done while he is awake. He has been on a drip and still has the catheter in so emergency meds can be given if needed.

After tonight in the car, Rachel is so right about the journey to get to an MRI and she says that MRIs are only worth doing if you have excellent people who know how to read the MRi and she is not sure that on the cheaper MRIs the quality is there, She knows it would be in East Anglia but the travel and the stress and everything that goes with this she thinks would be too much for Franta in his current medical state.

She says that in a way they would love him to have an MRI cos none of them have seen anything like what is happening to him before and therefore he is a very interesting case but that is no justification. However of course it was ultimately my decision.

The alternative is to treat him as having a mass in his brain, which is the abs and steroids but all the time they need to constantly monitor his Bp, retinas, kidneys etc etc they have to be very careful about how they treat him.

I have no doubt now, I would not want to drive him for about 5 hours for an MRI cos tonight we havent managed one hour.

In tha car everything was going well I thoought except he doesnt like the bandage on his leg protecting the catherter and intitiall I thought thats what he was banging but no it was a start of an attck, which was very short and calm and not much drool. I managed to park imeediately and after he ate a whole pouch of Fekix,,,,,,,I gave him half and he meowed cos he wanted more, It took 10 mins for him to eat it and then 5 mins further up the road he had a full blown attack.

It was the most terrifying thing cos he got caught up in his blankets, could turn round cos not enough room , totally freaked and ended up lying on his side making a horrendous scary noise. He was hadly able to move and had his tongue hanging out and was panting very quickly and I was so scared he was dying, I again had been lucky cos I managed to pull straight in at a garage and park before all this started.

In the end I took the top off the carrier and took the blankets out which were soaked.....now know he had urinated as he did at 0100 this morning...............and I was just stroking him cos didnt know what to do except he needed to be at a vets and my vet was closed. I had a nearly run down mobile cos it had only part charged before I left but was lucky in that I had this other vets card in my purse but instead of just connecting you to the vet, they gave you another number and couldnt find paper of pencil and cant remember numbers so that too two goes.

Then got throught to anurse told story and she put me onto the vet who then wanted my number and I didnt know it but was on my mobile bit I could nt access it while on phone,,,,,,,so another two attempts and mobile nearly dead.

We then had a blazing row and I threatened her as said bekow and they agreed to take him over night.

My problem was that I was much closer to them than home (Vets Now were even further aaway and not knowing the area would have got lost too) and I was worried Franta may have another attck in thecar cos there is no ryhme or reason to when they occur. Of course he was g fine and then had to drive one handed after carrier nearlt fell of the seat cos had not strapped it in in my panic.......so was having to hold onto it at every corner etc.

They were waiting for me when I arrived and the vet and I have apologized to each other and she said to calll a truce but it will have to be sorted out tomorrow and suspect they will ring the Gower and I have got someone in trouble and I will not be allowed to use the other vet again, leaving me with Vets Now which is a long way away and rubbish and also very much more costly.

The stupid reasoning is that they will not treat an animal that iss registered somewhere else unless it is transferred totally to them, so one cannot get treatment from the nearest vet when its dying because of stupid professional rules. I was very lucky cos I had written out by Rachel  in quite detail Frantas treatment and info about his situation, which is more info than any emergency Vet would have normally although they were saying that cos they didnt have frantas records they couldnt treat him........and what record do vets now have!!!!!!!!!!!!! I said I omnly wanted someomne too look after him overnight as I wasnt sure I could get him home.

We did have another little barney too because I tiold her that he needed food after one of these attacks and he needed it desperately...no she said we would not give food to an animal like this cos they maybe sick.

It took me a while to get her to listen that Rachel and I had duiscussed this tonight and she said absolutely to carry on doing this and they had done it today, It was the latter info which changed the vets mind. I had tried to tell her that for 3 days this had been happening and he was never sick.

Although franta could stay over night at my vets nobody stays with them and obviously in Frantas case this is no good, so Rachel had said do I want him to stay overnight with vets now,,,,,,,then I would have had to leave home at 0630 to go and collect him cos they close at 0800!! I told her no and she knew they were registered with this orther vets ands yesterday even had guessed right as to which one it was!

Tomorrow I have to collect Franta by 1000 and the original emergency vet I saw there with Sasa over a year ago is on duty, and then I have to take him to the Gower so Rachel can check him out and again on Sunday and probably every day next week. To doi this rachel is gonna have to tell me what to do if he has an attack in the car because I am sure that what happened tonight may have done him soome damage.

I am soooo tired but know I am not gonna be able to sleep and also I am neglecting the other cats..............I just dont know what to do. When Franta was in the surgery he was allowed to wander around an explore, Rachel thinks he is better than he was this morning but agrees he is still not Franta cos he would have been rushing around and jumping up on things and he is moveing very sedately although he has all his faculties an brain still working very well.

I think they key to all of this is stopping the attacks happening and nobody knows how to to do this, especially without an MRI scan, so its all hit and miss and I find this so terrifying.

I asked her whether he was in pain duringt the attck and she said possibly and she could not put hand on heart and say definately not.

She said that she thought that as the attacks were of short duration right now it was not an issue, the issue is to try and stop them because for his age he is in very good conditiion despite the other issues like kidneys which at the meoment are not a major issue.

I asked about the anaemia and she said that she would like to get him on a special drip for that but it could wait for now.

The last horrendous issue is the vet who shall not be named again............Rachel said she had examined bothe ears very carefully while Franta was out but then didnt tell me what she found.......well she didnt find anything he has no ear infection in either ear although he does have some irritaion which is unesplained. So the drops and convenia he was given on Wednesday was a waste of time,,,,,,,,someone should be shot!!

As she mentioned that Richard had also been involved today, I think she wanted to make sure that nothing was missed this time and the boss was aware. This n]means that I can go to Richard or Rachel and leave the other one out of the loop.

When I left Franta he was being stroked to death by the vet and the nurse and totally peacefull and I hope he has a peaceful night with them and they were discussing a snuggly bed for him.........his blue looking peepers really get into peoples  hearts  ;D

I dont know if any of that was coherant but its the best I can do cos need to go to bed and try to sleep before it all starts again tomorrow......sigh

I so want Franta to be happy and peaceful again and at home.

:thanks: every one for all your kind thoughts and messages

The East Anglia place will be Newmarket, Gill - they are the foremost veterinary specialists in the UK - but such a long way away for a poorly puss to go

have just been reading all your posts you wonderful people  :thanks:

its a very long story and I have to eat. Frnata should be home with me but had to go back and leave him at an emergency vet cos he ad a massive attack in the car after having a small one only 15 mins earlier. Had a blazing row on the phone with the other ver cos she said not their policy to take other vets cats and I should go to Vets Now.

Am afraid I threatened her over the phone and told her if my cat died on the way home I would know where to come and she let me take him there.

Franta was Ok before we left and wandered round the surgery and he has a catheter in his leg incase he needs emergency treatment and has to go back tomorrow. He has had adifferent antobiotic, one that gets to the brain area///////dont know if that caused the problem in thecar.

He will not be having an MRI..........would you believe Bristol dont have a machine only a mobile one that comes every thursady, so Franta would have to go to East Anglia somewhere near Witty I think.

I am rather too tired right now to write any more but when I have eaten I will put the storty on.

I dont know how long I will have Franta but the vet thinks that this is the best course of treatmnet for him, which I will explain later.

Sorry to have worried you all so much but its been a terrible day and even worse night. All I know right now that Franta is safe under a good vet care and nursing staff who will watch him all night....I woas so looking forward to him coming home though.

Why do vets do this.  Gill has to drive miles worrying about what the vet is going to say, why couldn't she have given her an idea over the phone and then discussed it further on the visit.

I had exactly the same thing when Clapton had his last dental. The receptionist phoned me on my Mobile and I was in Canterbury. She said Clapton was ready to collect but the vet wanted to speak to me. I had a nervous 7 mile journey wondering what he was going to say. When I got there, he just informed me that he had taken all 4 teeth out as requested and that Clapton did really well  :tired: - Naturally I was pleased but could have done without the worry and being distracted whilst driving.

Really hope you have some positive news at the vets

Re the MRI scan, I'm sure I read somewhere about getting the claim 'pre-approved' by the insurer.  The vets may not allow a claim direct to the insurer as if the insurance co reject it they're stuffed as you could just refuse to pay.  If the insurance company are asked to pre-approve the claim then you may not have to pay up front.  I'd get onto them tonight if they're still open when you get back

Oh god, I missed this last night.  So sorry, Gill   I hope the vet has various options that will help Franta.  It does sound as though the MRI scan is likely to be needed at this stage.  I am sending lots of healing vibes for Franta and calming vibes for you

Incidentally, I've always thought that MRI scans cost about £2000.  If you do go down that route, definitely discuss payment with them - when it comes to those sort of amounts there must be lots of people with insurance who can't pay up front.  Surely they will deal direct with the insurance company?  For some of it, at least.

At least Rachael mentioned discussing options i.e. more than one? There may not have been enough time to have a thorough discussion on the phone as Gill is an hours drive away?  I have such a bad headache and feel so sick. Anyone else?

It's all so confusing  :(. Tom had anaemia but I'm sure we decided that caused him to be nauseous and put him off his food whereas Franta's appetite has increased.

I send all possible good vibes altho know you will have left already. Everything is crossed for that little man. Drive safely Gill.  Keep your mind on the road. You have the other 3 to look after too. All of these comments are being sent telepathically...... hope your own good sense is telling you these things too

Only just logged on - and so sorry to see that the situation with Franta has worsened  You probably are already on your way, but Gill, could the aneamia be causing the fits etc? I guess Rachel would have considered that, but just a thought. The other thing I thought of was blood pressure as if its high that can cause the howling that he's been doing - but I expect Rache's thought of that too and taken his blood pressure anyway? Take care and safe journey
