Gill sorry for the loss of Franta, you did all you could and then some now you need to have some cuddles with Ducha and get some sleep, it won't help the pain but it is what you need

A wonderful boy who will be sadly missed by his Mum and siblings and who fought a wonderful fight with the help of his Mum

I have just got back home and cant post right now  :'( :'(

I will move this thread to the Bridge in a couple of days.

He went into renal failure and if Geraint had told me of the latest bloods I would never have put him through this, he copt out and made me wait for 6 hrs until Gareth came in.

Franta is lying behind me at present and will go back tomorrow for indivudual cremation.

I will do a tribute when I am feeling up to it.

Please forgive me Napoleon

So sorry that Franta had not eaten - he has been through so much so it is a bit understandable but you are right it cannot go on any longer - he needs assistance. So Gill - believe you have done the right thing he is in the best place at the vets to get the feeding/nourishment going.

Lots of these for you cos know how worried and tired you must be

Don't know what to say Gill  :(  Just so extremely sorry to hear that Franta isn't able to eat for himself and wishing for miracles to get him back on track.

The vet is certainly right that it is very difficult to kick start a cat back into eating when he hasn't been eating for a while so I don't think you have a choice in the matter     He must have nourishment ....

Much as you don't want him hospitalized again, it might be the best for Franta, if they can get some food into him somehow then that's the most important thing

So hard to make them eat, I remember having the same problem with Maxy on the days when he was feeling off due to his kidney issues, you try and tempt them with everything and they just won't take it

So sorry Gill - I remember the frustration when Oscar refused to eat. In the end the only thing that tempted him was the food we feed our carp - weird I know but if you look its made up of dried fish , so i guess it tasted ok to him , and like you I was so desperate I would have tried anything! :(

Hopefully once he has been on the drip for a little he will be tempted to eat again. These Birmans are so damn stubborn! :tired:

Gill - does Franta like yeast flavoured things?  I wonder whether sprinkling some of this on food might make it more appetising for him?

http://www.pet-supermarket.co.uk/products-Purina-Veterinary-Diet-Fortiflora-Probiotics_HB5770.htm

I have used that as a probiotic before but it contains yeast and has a yeasty smell.  I remember reading on a cat nutrition site that one vet said she sprinkled some of it on wet food to help dry food addicts eat wet food (apparently it is very similar to the digest that biscuits are coated in) or to help stimulate the appetite.

please don't blame yourself Gill, he needs to go for his own good. you couldn't have done things any differently, if he wont eat, nothing you can do will change that. once they syringe feed him or feed him by a tube, he will hopefully get used to eating again and start eating on his own. he is in the best place with the best care from the vets. thinking of you x

Just had a long talk with Geraint and Franta is going to be hospitalized again.

He feels that with the kidney problem he needs to be either syringe fed or fed through a tube into his stomach because he thi nks that if he doesnt eat within a couple of hours things will be very serious for his organs.

Poor Franta and just dont know if this is right but Geraint siad that once they stop eating for as long as Franta its very hard to get them to start again as they are technically anorexic and the only thing stopping him from being well is lack of food and sufficient liquid. I a, hating myself right now.

Have just rung the vets and waiting for Geraint to arrive and ring me.

Franta is asleep as far as I can tell but with one eye open.

I dont know if the drip yesterday and all the time he has been at the vets will help save his liver.

The problem we have as far as I know is that his liver is under real threat cos if a cat doesnt eat for a few days then the liver deterioates quickly and there is no way back from that.

He has not eaten for many days now and nobody at the vets has mentioned this yet. I mentioned to Gareth yesterday that when he was last not eating after a dental they gave him valium which makes them eat but he would gobble the food but it didnt solve the problem, only coming hom did.

I agree with Sue that he is probably happeir at home but he was so dehydrated yesterday there was no choice but for him to go back on a drip and for that he has to be at the dreaded vets.

Last night I did what Sue said and left him alone to do his own thing and he has now turned over on his side amongst all the dishes but I bet his eyes are still open.

I suppose I need to ring the vet, they open in 15mins but I am so tired I really shouldnt be driving.

His poor little fron legs are in a real state and his veins are collapsing from the drip and I have left the bandage on his leg cos I reckon thats where the drip was yesterday.

Franta right now is killing himself and I just dont know what to do and seems the vets dont either.

all that Sue has said makes perfect sense, he is probably completely exhausted and just needs a bit of time in familiar surroundings to rest, I know its hard for you and the temptation is to be watching him constantly

Gill,  is there anything that you can detect in Franta's behaviour that appears to give him any ease at the moment?  I think the fact he's drinking, albeit a little, is a positive sign.   He may have started to clamp his mouth shut in anticipation of being fed or given medication (cos he's a stubborn little soldja).   If he doesn't feel like it at the moment then his jaw lenching could as you say be almost a food phobia.

Could you perhaps try just dampening his gums from time to time and seeing if he relaxes a little?  He's obviously feeling better about being home, because he was shouting for you, and he settled ont he bed.  Even if he's not actively sleeping as such, having some quiet time may be good for him just now.

Sometimes with Paddy, I would leave him in his cosy little corner, because it was dark, warm and comfortable for him, and other than to check on him visually I would leave him be for a while.  You could perhaps try and see if he settles any, just keeping an eye on him to make sure he doesn't collapse in the meantime.

I recall reading once in a book (I think it was a James Herriott book in fact but not altogether sure , as it may have been Buster Lloyd Jones, another good vet of that era) how he was once called upon to euthanise a sheep which had been injured.  Instead, he gave it slightly less than was needed, and it went into a deep sleep.  After almmost 24 hours, as he was beginning to think it wasn't going to make any difference, the sheep woke up and began to take an interest.  He worked on the assumption that sometimes animals (and people) need a period of complete rest in order to heal and that sedation can sometimes be a useful tool in that regard.  Franta's had cage rest etc, but it's not been in his usual familiar surroundings, and I wonder if he needs a day or two to "reset" himself?

I say all of this, but I know nontheless how anxiety-inducing it is for you, feeling helpless when you would give your own right arm in an instant to make everything right again.

Oh Sue, Je just wont eat at all, absolutely nothing. He is souround by dishes of different foods including pilchards in tomato sauce which I found at the back of the cupboard.

I thought it was good cos he started drinking during the night and was going to the water fairly often and seemed to be having a big drink but when I saw the water level this morning he has had very little.

He is using his tray so liquid is coming out in bigger quantities than its going in.

I cant open his mouth at all, its like its blooming glued together and yesterday when Gareth managed to look at his gums, he send they were all tacky cos he was so dehydrated.

I just dont know what to to do with him now cos he has loads of fight but against all ther things that will help him.

Its like he has a food phobia.

Gareth is not in today so cant talk to him..

Franta just crouches and watches and has slept on my bed for some of last night and has even been to the water bowl and come back up on the bed loads

He isnt hetting much sleep as I can testify and a cat of his age should be sleeping loads.

I dont know what else I can do.

I assume if he continues like this his body will start to close down?

Well he has sealed his mouth and dont know if he got more than a drop of lectade, he just let it dribble out.

I just dont undeestand him cos he was drinking last night but inspite of that he was massively dehydrated this morning.

Another sleepless night!

Hi Gill,
with the lectade , once you have mixed it , it will keep fine at lowest shelf of fridge -i did that and it was ok .
Try it at the side of his mouth , if need be you will have to open it for him and put it down him if you can .
I know its hard as i had the same problems with Bungly at the end , she just refused food and i put it in her mouth and she wouldn't swallow it , and it just dropped out .

How about mince ? raw? turkey mince is what Bungly ate a little of a few times.
How about a frozen ice cube for him to lick ? Try anything you have , -i cant think of anything else at the moment.
I am at the end of the phone if you need to talk -dont go to bed till late (2am ish ) (Have noted number and taken it out for you. ) Hope he picks up soon .
                                                       Gill x

He wont eat ham and I dont have tuna or anything cos my cats just wont eat it and I dont either.

He has now passed a bit of diahrea and now remember he had this a week ago at vets and they bloomin starved him and after that he has refused to eat althoiugh he licked a couple of things .

He is physically moving away from any food but am going to try some lectade now.
