Yep that's the truth Tiga - its a funny old country when it comes down to it. And in Tassie it is 17 and drizzling - though looks to be warming up in few days ... Problem with a big place - you can never generalise ... It was actually musings on this very issue that prompted my thread - the fires had not at that stage, escalated to the point they are now at, hence placement in Chat ...

Unfortunately there is plenty of rain in Australia at the moment but in the wrong place. There are bad floods in North Queensland although they seem to be receding now. The town of Ingham has been underwater for a week.

Roz ...  this was posted by BC on the other thread.

Here's some footage of someone with a koala who survived - it's lovely !!  He was later taken to a refuge where he is being treated for singed paws, but is otherwise fine!!

Hi Gill,

No, I wasn't aware of another thread initially (and I did look for one) but since reading blackcat's post I concluded that there must be...and yes, I have since found it but haven't read it yet because I can't face reading any more distressing accounts of this tragedy at the moment....I've heard and seen enough....I merely wanted some advice on any co-ordinated rescue missions that might be taking place, and thanks to our fab members I now have this info.

I didn't look in the Gen Chatting section.  I think I checked Donations and Appeals and Animal Welfare but because I haven't looked the relevant thread up yet, perhaps you can tell me whether we have a little fund going for this disaster?  If we have I will contribute to that.

Thanks for keeping me up to date hun.

Lots of love

Roz

Thank you to everyone who has responded to this thread....I knew I could rely on you all.   And thank you Sam and blackcat for the links and comments.  As I said, I am finding this increasingly difficult to listen to but if any of us can make a modest contribution, then at least it will help those angels who are out there in the field trying to care for these poor animals.

I wish we could send our snow over to Oz.

I'm praying for loads of rain to fall there....but I know it's not likely to happen. :'(  Miracles do happen sometimes though.

Best wishes,

Roz

Thanks Sam, and thanks Roz for highlighting this issue - clearly Sam has better googling skills than me, lol. Yes the RSPCA is the main organisation that will be coordinating relief for domestic animals and the Vic fund will be the best for wildlife - the fires are ongoing so that is dominating the news, but a number of reports have mentioned local efforts to rescue injured wildlife and animals. There are still a lot of roads closed so the opportunity to assess the losses does not currently exist. This is because trees alongside the road are still burning and many have been damaged to the point where they may fall any minute, so crews are working on getting these safe before they allow people back into the affected areas ...

Hi Roz,

The RSPCA work in Australia not sure if they are the same as in the UK http://www.rspcavic.org/campaigns_news/news_bushfires.htm

Another organisation is http://www.wildlifevictoria.org.au/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=frontpage&Itemid=1

Hi Roz

I have just read a post on CatChat from Amanda in Victoria (Aus). It is in the Rainbow Bridge section. Maybe she would know who we could contact to help.

Australian bush fires - so many animals must be suffering
« Reply #1 on: February 09, 2009, 12:30:25 PM »
These awful out-of-control bush fires that are raging in Australia are causing so much death and destruction but the animal suffering goes unreported.  Can you imagine how horrendous this must be for the indigenous wildlife....not to mention the domestic pets who have been caught up in it?

I would like to help with a contribution but cannot find anything on the web and haven't received any e-mails regarding rescue yet. Do any of our Aussie members know the best Australian wildlife charity to contact who might be helping to rescue and treat these stricken creatures...the few that will survive, that is...?  I can't bear to listen to the news about the tragedy any longer. I have found some articles about free vet care for injured animals but not a dedicated rescue group.

I pray that the fire-fighters can get these dreadful fires under control before the high temperatures return later this week.  If arsonists are to blame....and they usually are....they should be shot and even this would be too good for them.  Maybe they should be made to suffer the pain of being burnt to death...............like the innocent victims of their actions have...... It is so very tragic. :(

Thank you in advance.

Roz
