I Was playing with Jeannie's fur last night, and I am swaying towards this being a tortie, when you brush his fur the wrong way, there is a lot more colour in patches, although the patches aren't a deep ginger, but then he is showing signs of age fading his black fur on his legs - and as we dont know how old this cat is, it could just be that the ginger is fading due to age.

I had assumed all "gingers" were male!!

In almost 20 years of fostering and also dealing with over 1000 cats a year we have had as many ginger females if not more than males.

WC - 75% of gingers are female, we had a litter in just before Christmas, 4 gingers, a tortie and a black, and 3 of the gingers were female. We had a couple of other ginger females last year.

My brother's mom cat is ginger. She had a litter of 4 ginger boys. I also thought most gingers are male.

We had a good laugh about it yesterday, still can't remember if anyone sexed this cat back in Nov or if we all just assumed (I know I didn't, cos he had already been in care for a fortnight and had a vet check). I was looking at his face last night and woudl still say I had a female cat, but I have seen the evidence that proves otherwise!! We haven't changed the name, as he can't hear anyway, but it is tricky getting used to saying 'he'. I dont often get pure black males either, so unusual for me whichever way. Claw is fine, and had a lovely long snuggle on my knee last night. It does explain why Sam hates him though, he isn't as bothered by any of the girls in the house.

Hope your parents got on OK with moving with the weather Tab.

Male torties! I knew it. There's a tortie tom near where I live and he's 'found' my pretty young lady, Lettuce. I use the term lady very loosely. It's crazy. She is one side of the window and he is outside and they are both trying to get to each other. She's chattering and climbing up the inside of the window and he's outside trying to pull the window out of it frame with his teeth! He bites on the wooden bit in the middle and there are teeth marks! This carries on 'till I go out with a bucket of water..  Then he disappears for a few months. She's been done and I think he has too but you know what they say, love will find a way., well, not through my window it won't :mad2:

Thing is, he looks quite feminine too. If I didn't know I would still think he was a she. Don't they say that male torties tend to be a bit effeminate? I'm sure I read that somewhere once. He's gorgeous, whichever he is!

Fine, we decided that the weeing is just normal, the only thing is with all the shock I forgot to ask the vet to check teeth, as 'she' has been a bit fussy with food.

glad kitty is ok  :)

that's interesting about colours, we have had mainly black cats and they have all been male, of the black ferals the females have always had some white on.

Is it also true that a black cat with white whiskers is really a white cat with a lot of dark areas merged together ?

Mr T has black whiskers and only a very few white hairs.  Gizmo & Lucky who were black and whites both had white whiskers ......

Great to have a rare one  ;D

Kocka was also missexed and I continued to call her she cos she started off as a he then was changed and after 6 months or more wasnt going back and the name was unisex anyway  ;D

Hope that Jeannie is OK

Getting the sex wrong is incidental, 'she' isn't being rehomed, but it is the fact it appears this is a male tortie that is shocking. Couple of pics taken today

Took Jeannie to the vet last night cos she has ripped one of her claws, and asked the vet to check her bladder in case there was an infection making her wee quite a lot, as bloods ruled out kidneys and diabetes. She felt her bladder, and then looked 'down below' for any signs, and asked 'why does this cat have a penis?' - well, that was a shock, as we thought she was a girl. But yep, she definitely does have one!! That isn't too bad in itself, not the first mis-sexed cat, and wont be the last.

However, my vets first comment on seeing Jeannie yesterday was 'what a lovely TORTIE'!! Vet has never seen a moggie male tortie, so unless 'she' is really a black cat with odd pigmentation, it appears I have a male tortie!! Have to say she is an unusual tortie, not as brindled as a normal dark tortie.

Good job she is deaf, and has no idea she has been called by a girls name. I am continuing to call her a she, can't get my head round her being a boy after she has been here nearly 3 months. We are trying to work out whether the vet sexed her initally, or we all just assumed that a black and ginger cat was a girl.
