It's a horrible thought when you think how many animals have suffered because there hasn't been a vet to hand

It's a shame in these circumstances that they don't have the provisions to put an animal out of their misery, maybe a large dose of sedative or some kind of Euthacol where they can euthanise if need be.

cc, both Dawn and I, and a few others beside, have faced the horrific situation of an animal screaming in pain in your arms and with no hope of professional help. It tears your guts clean from your body to have to do it but the only decent and noble thing to do is end it for the animals sake.

What would you do CC? Let the cat suffer or want to end it's suffering? It's a little different hitting an animal on the back of the head to smashing it's head in with a hammer

I always remember one of my cats skinning a mouse and it was still running around alive, I had to hit it with a brick to put it out of it's misery, it was one of the worst things I ever had to do.........I hate hurting any animal no matter what it is but I couldn't stand by and watch it suffering

Poor baby

I'm sorry but I couldn't use the knife, I think if it was a situation where she was in so much pain and a life had to be ended, I would go for a hammer..........what a horrible decision to have to make, makes me feel like crying just thinking about it

I'm glad she sounds as if she was unconscious and the sedative did some good, but god love her all the same

I just pray that her suffering is over and she fell asleep peacefully in her mums arms

what a totally horrendous thing to happen. Surely a vet should at the very least be able to advise on a lethal dose of whatever medicines this woman has at her home? How far away is a drive to a pharmacy to pick up a prescription if she doesn't have anything? I hope that the cat passes away peacefully under sedation from its injuries. This is so dreadful, please pass on my condolences.

She did ring a vet for advice when it first happened but they werent any help.
Driving her to the nearest vets isnt an option Julie, she is in snowy Canada and over 3 1/2 hours away from a vet.

I havent heard back from her for a while now, Hopefully Becky is passing over quietly

Thats what she was doing.
i told her to just keep stroking her, telling her how much she is loved and that its ok to go

If she cant do anything to finish the cat suffering just tell her she is doing fine by having the cat on her lap and talking to the little one. She must be so scared.

Think the cat is slowly going....she seems to be quiet but is bleeding from her nose and ears.
The lady says she is on her lap.

I'd go for a hammer to the back of the head. It has to be a strong, swift blow that would instantly stun. If that didn't finish things, I'd follow that with a knife as bc suggested.

Sorry, but human sensitivities aren't important here. This is a lost battle and mercy is best served ending things as fast as possible.

And do pass on my condolences and thoughts.

I have asked what sedative she has given her and if she could over dose her with it

I didn't read this before posting but a sedative seems the best option?

Can a vet not advise a painless sedative overdose? - even a human sleeping tablet would surely knock a cat out or kill it but it has to be one that will send the cat to sleep rather than send it into convulsions.

Failing that, a sedative before using a knife?

It doesn't bear thinking about but the poor baby needs an end to its pain

I used to carry a knife in the car when i lived in the country in case of injured wildlife. Sometimes it is just too far to travel. It really is quite the best way to do it, as far as I can see. The alternatives are too ghastly to contemplate. At least the cat will be cuddled by its owner as it goes. The alternatives don't allow that ...

Am getting quite upset at the mere thought of having to do that to a loved pet ...

But tell her to go outside to do it. Arterial blood spurts ...

god, what a ghastly situation. I think I would use a sharp knife into the point below the corner of the jaw, to penetrate the jugular. It will be messy, and fairly slow, but relatively painless as bleeding out just makes you feel muzzy ...

I am chatting to a lady in Canada -

Her cat is 22yrs old, deaf and blind and someone left a door open and she got out.
Sadly she has been hit, the cat is screaming in pain .....the women is over 3 1/2hrs from the nearest vet
What would be the kindest and quickest way of ending the cats pain ?
