doesn't sound like there is much you can do apart from reporting these things as they come up to mods

I have tried asking my admin friend, but he said that the forum doesn't get involved in reporting people to the police, but would comply if asked for information, unfortunately since I can't get hold of the persons IP address and the post has been deleted, I'm not sure what I can do.

I don't really go on any other forums but ocassionally I go on MSE (moneysavingexpert).  If I ever see any posts along the lines of 'How do I keep cats out of my garden' with replies such as 'shoot it' I don't give them the satisfaction of a reply but instead I report the post to admin reminding them that it is illegal to cause unecessary suffering to an animal.  The posts always get removed swiftly

Thanks, Helen!  The voice of reason!  Im afraid Im far too inclined to act first and think afterwards .... :-[  At least this time I stopped and thought ....  I will bear your advice in mind - Im sure Im going to need it at some point :briggin:

Am I allowed to post Website  details  where on 21st Nov 2008 someone posted a suggestion to kill cats who pooed in the garden?!!

I don't think it'd help to post them on here, Wibblechick - apart from eliciting some very understandable reactions - but again, I'd argue that it was incitement to commit an offence and worth reporting as discussed.

Is that  question to the Mods? If so, then sadly no, we would be breaking the terms of our own forum terms and conditions. Heartless  :censored: they are.  >:(

I have come across a website just the same, I dont know if its the same one but it was on about cats poop and gardens, and how to keep them away. I think someone even suggested using a shot gun, I was very angry!

The police can maybe look into  it as they do with ebay fraud, after all this is someone telling others to commit animal cruelty.

I wish it were as simple as that Christine, but I doubt the police would do anything about it, I don't believe the forum signup requires an address or anything so I doubt they'd know who it is anyway.

Each IP address is recorded, all the police need is that. They can trace it back to host back and back to subscriber. The forum doesn;t need to know who they are, but the police can find it.

I would have your friend report it Bryony, if anything I would think its their duty as a responsible for the forum.

I don't have his IP address though, thats the issue.

The forum admin will, though - and possibly the moderators too (this varies).

I didn't realise you could do all that, I'm used to looking up who owns websites and things but have never looked up a person before. I didn't know you could trace an isp from just forum member information. He doesn't have much publicly posted, no email addy or anything like that, just that he's from teeside, is an accountant and has kids, although he has listed his interests as 'Beer, Golf's, My kids, in that order' what a horrible person!

I'm a geek .  ;).

Easy to trace an ISP using that.

Well even if they don't report it to the police, they should report it to their ISP, as it will be a break in terms and conditions.
Even if the ISP isn't in their email address, they can do a trace on the IP address, and if the person has their own domain and is using that as an email, they will be breaking the terms and conditions of that too.
I imagine it would be a major inconvenience to have their internet borked.

I can't report it unfortunately as I don't have any access to the persons details, other than their username. My friend the mod thinks it won't achieve anything because the police wouldn't bother following it up based on a sentence typed on a forum, which I guess to a certain extent is probably true, my experience of the police is they can't really be bothered with things like this the majority of the time, which is awful really.

I'm sure the police would be able to trace the person through his ISP, Bryony, but you may be right that they wouldn't follow up something of this nature.

It might still be worth reporting it though, people like this are scum and shouldn't be allowed to get away with it  :censored:  If they suggest this on forums, how many cats have actually died at this scums hands  :mad2:  :mad2:

That sounds like bliss Leigh - miles away from anyone or anything that could harm my furbabies.

Sometimes I am ashamed to be part of the Human race  >:(

Me too Sheryl,

Although I do enjoy the company of my friends I don't have siblings and have lived on my own most of my life and, to be perfectly honest, on the whole I do prefer the company of my cats to most people. I've never been robbed, assaulted, insulted, threatened or disgusted by feline behaviour however I have been subjected to all these things and more by human beings. It wouldn't bother me particularly if I didn't have day-to-day human contact as long as I had my cats. I'm very used to my own company and find their company more than fulfills my modest social needs. I'm afraid that on the whiole with the exception of my friends, many of whom are congregated here on Purrs, I don't have a very high opinion of the human race.

Cheers

Leigh

Luckily the antifreeze post was removed before the thread was locked by another equally appalled mod, he is likely to ban the individual that made the comment from the forum.

I would argue the poster described was committing the criminal offence of incitement http://www.cps.gov.uk/legal/h_to_k/inchoate_offences/#P20_588 as it's against the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to be cruel to an animal.  I think that the forum admin should report him to the police.

That guy better pray I don't find him- or i'll pour antifreeze down his throat (i'll follow that up with a large dose of rat poison) then watch him suffer..... >:(

It is disgusting but the older I get the less I'm suprised by the actions of some  :censored: people, as they saying goes.

"The more people I meet, the more I like my cats"

I often think that I'd like to be able to afford to live in a really remote part of the (a) country where I could live with the cats and without much human contact.

Cheers

I am a member of a fair few car forums, and have just come across a thread in the general chat area of one about how to deter cats from pooing on your garden. Some of the responses made me feel sick, but the worst was someone explaining how to use antifreeze to kill a cat and why they are attracted to it. Luckily a friend of mine is a mod on the site and is going to remove the post asap, but the sheer fact that someone would consider this and suggest it to another person is completely beyond me.
