My previous vet told me once that a cat was considered geriatric over 10 years which I found alarming. Tom is now 17 and started to look thinner about a year or two ago (he was never fat) and looks very like Mr Ching. Tom also had very good ("remarkable" per our current vet) blood results last summer and he still weighs 5 kilos which is excellent but he has a very boney spine now so I think that's probably par for the course at that age.

The fact that Mr Ching has put on a whole kilo and is so active is really wonderful at age 16. Well done.

how old is old??

The oldest cat Cats Protection took in was 32, although that is an exceptional age.

One of my babies recently suffered a stroke at 15 and didn't make it. :(

But the other four are around: 16, 11,10 and 5.

I'm told the "average" age is around 15.

Hoping you have Mr Chings company for many years to come.

A bit like humans as old as they feel  ;D

16 is a very good age but we have two 25yr olds on here and 20 is no longer a very strange age for a cat. If is health check is good and he has put on that weight he sounds like he is doing fine...............pictures please  ;D

Our eldest boy is 16 and we have had him a year. He came with a pile of vet notes going back 8 years and for the last five or so the vet referred to him as jeriatric! I think he was just not looked after properly... He has put on about a kilo in the last year but all around his belly- he still has a bony back but I think that maybe his age. The vet did bloods recently and all his organs are good for his age. He doesn't seem to have got any older in the last year and still plays like a kitten and runs and climbs a lot.

How old are your cats and how old is old??
