thanks for that. Looks like spider plant's just fine whoopeeeeee. I wonder if a plant isn't listed if it's ok? We buy a lot of lisianthus as it's one of my favs. Ditto freesias and alstromeria.
The Sheesh mostly eats rose bits though. No idea why.

I think chewing a leaf or petal can be as dangerous

With lilies, yes thats right - Every part of the lily plant is toxic to cats -  pollen, leaf, petal, even root.

This is a list of plants that are OK for cats:  http://www.btinternet.com/~harveynj101/plantok.htm

Here is a more comprehensive list, however it is American so I don't recognise many of the plants:  http://www.cfainc.org/articles/plants-non-toxic.html

Can I just revive this topic please as need some info and reassurance on this. The lists I've read contradict each other on quite a few plants and flowers, which is frustrating! Does anyone have the definitive word on the following:
Roses
African violet
Lisianthus
Freesias
Spider plant (they've eaten lots of that in their lives), latin name chlorophytum - a big favourite with the boys. It seems to settle their tummy but have seen 'hen and chickens' (some people call it that I *think*) listed as toxic????? At present the plant is recovering in the shower and they have limited access to it as they go mad and pull hard at its long 'leaves' to munch it - have even pulled it clean out of its pot!

all of the above we buy quite often for the flat to cheer it up a bit. Max chews roses when they get a bit tired but seems to leave the others alone.

Any def conclusions on yukka? We always used to have a giant one but that was when the boys were younger and had access to a cat run so don't think they chewed it. They (esp his Maxness) would prob chew it nowadays.
umbrella plant is on one list as toxic and the other as non-toxic but no info available. FABcats list is quite small. I would really like a green plant in the flat if it were safe....how about...
ficus? some disagreement on websites on that one too :(
Or is there anyone I can send the list above to to get a vet's opinion as mine doesn't know, other than avoid lilies.

I don't risk any flowers or plants as Magpie was a plant eater and I think Mosi would be the same.  Some plants may not be toxic unless a fair bit is eaten but unless you can be there 24/7 to supervise it's hard to be certain they won't make a meal of them.  I'm taking no chances!

I'm sure there must be a poisonous element; but some in the list puzzle me.

If there is some element of poison then it best we be forewarned. Much of the information on lists that are UK based originally cames from the National Poisons Centre.

Although some may be puzzling, I am not a chemist and do not know the compounds so I will rely on what the professionals tell me in this case as I would rather air on the side of caution.

This list isn't strictly correct. Some of the plants listed are dangerous if a cat merely brushes past it, whereas others are questionable. My cats have been known to dig into left-over mashed potato I've left lying around, and come to no harm. I even had a cat who loved chips. And onions?

It can be on some plants and flowers however, as preciously advised the pollen on certain lillys can kill with a very short time. I used to have some lovely plants in the house, sadly I now only have one and I think that is on its way out, even those that are not poisonous got very tatty.

Lillies for instance aren't dangerous as a whole, but the pollen is pretty damn nasty to cats!

My Jeannie is just like Amber, no matter how high I put flowers and plants she is there. (Unfortunately Jeannie went blind last week but I expect she would still smell them). Whenever I am given flowers I have to put them in the Loo as that is the only place she would not get them. The problem comes when more than one person is generous at the same time as there are only so many flowers you can pout in the loo.

I dont have any plants or flowers in the flat and sometimes I really miss them but as Amber has tried to eat every flower Ive brought in (even silk ones) Im too worried to have them. I even put them on a shelf where I had to stand on a chair to get them up there and got up the next morning to find Amber curled around the vase where she obviously fell asleep sucking freesia and scatering petals around herself  >:(
I sometime think I'll get a big vase she cant knock over and put them on the floor so she doesnt have to climb then spend all day squirting her with a water pistol but I know as soon as I go to bed (or even to the loo) she'd be chewing them again.
If anyone has any suggestions for how I can have flowers and enjoy them Id appreciate it
love

Thanks Gill. I know after reading the list that they aren't thoroughly accurate. Lillies for instance aren't dangerous as a whole, but the pollen is pretty damn nasty to cats!

The list is not that straight forward cos you will find virtually every common plant in gardens on there and its only specific parts of many plants that are dangerous and therefore not really a problem. There is another list giving the rest of the info but not sure where it is.

if I find it will post.
