Most of these types of heat pads don't seem nice and warm to the touch but warm up as the cat lays on them. Of course they need a very thin cover or in the heated beds a very thin 'something' otherwise the heat is wasted.

I'll try again Ron - maybe I didn't give the ones you sent me long enough to heat up. I'm actually improvised a tad as I had two spare reptile heat pads, so I've put them in the cat beds! (So far, a big hit.)

Hi Lesley so pleased your heated Pads are working OK only I sent two to jack sprat and he was having problems with them and i saw his email and thought it was the ones I sent him that were not working, only I sent out about a Dozen and it would be sad that the last two were the only ones that were not working properly.

Ron, the heated pads you sewnt me are always in use, one is constantly in the lounge and normally has two to three cats on it and I always have one ready in the car if I have to pick a cat up - I have an inverter in the car for just that and for the intensive care unit that is always in there as well.

Just to update - I contacted the EBay seller I bought the original pet bed from and he assured me he'd never had this problem before - I checked his feedback and he had no negative comments. I assumed it was a one off faulty plug and gave him the benefit of the doubt. Two heated pet beds and four plugs later I'm thinking maybe not.

If anyone wants to know the name of the seller I'll PM you, but I obviously can't do that on a thread.

if you want one you are more than welcome i have heaters fitted in my pens i had a lot given to me last year by a cattery that closed down i got rid of most of them last year on purrs

Ron, don't you need them? The reason I got one is because I thought it might help Old Mog to settle; and it did - until it broke! Then she was just confused by the fact it was like any other cat bed, bless her.

The smell did dissapate after a few days. I think it was purely as Mark said, because it was a new item and the plug is a transformer plug.

TBH anything electrical item that creates an ongoing smell is dodgy, a new plug or not!
You get what you pay for these days, safety doesnt come into it

I got the BSAVA endorsed heat pad, more expensive but peace of mind when using it alot

That's what the manufacterers offer them, so that's all they can offer the buyer. They are actually offering to send me a replacement plug as they think that's the problem.

EDIT: Just looked at all the sellers feedback - not one negative comment.

I would tell them you are going to speak to CAB. There are such things as statutory rights. Anything sold as new should be "Fit for purpose" - I was told this by CAB last year. A 2 week life for an electrical item is unreasonable. Do they gave any neg feedback? - a threat of CAB may well be enough for them to back down.

Another avenue is paypal protection.

Grrrr....the pet bed broke. And the EBay seller said it was only covered for 14 days! That is so appalling. I was going to buy a second one but I think I'll go with a different seller now.

Happy to report - no smell anymore. (Although the plug gets bloomin' hot!) Jack and Asteroid have sat on the heat pad but it is most definitely mostly Old Mogs; she's asleep on it as I type. I can even say "Go to your bed" when she's stressing and she does.

It is a transformer plug I think (I always start humming "Robots in Disguise" at this point!) - so will the smell dissapate?

Does not sound good.
I bought 2 whelping pads off ebay and put them stright into the beds and then put a fleece over the top and tuck in , 1 of mine has been on contantly since February !!! and the other one about 2 months and never smell .
I bought mine from Albany pets - although he is a bit short/curt with questions -the items have been excellent.
I also bought the same heated bed that Mark did , but its only okay for small cats .

Then id do sponge, pad, cover, if the heat pad is at the bottom then you would lose the heat underneath.

Hey MM. It's in a cover with a sponge square. What I want to know is does the actually pad go to the top (inside the cover) or the sponge?

Those pics arent very clear but the pad would go in the cover imo. The way they work is when the cat gets on their bodyweight increases heat transfer, if you slide your hand inbetween cat and pad it will be snug, thats how my one works anyway and its not that different

OK, this might seem an odd question - I bought a heated pet cushion off EBay (it was supposed to be for Old Mog but Sprattleys adopted it) but am unsure if the foam goes to the top for the cat to sit on or the actual heat pad. If the pads at the bottom it doesn't feel especially warm to me. Jack is currently sat on it with the heat mat near the top and I don't want him to get hurt.
