I'd write back and ask to see the costs he got together for his conclusions.

Also you may find that if your local rag is a bit slow , they might well cover the story for you - perhaps you could use an appeal to raise a couple of hundred quid to buy your cash starved council a couple of scanners.

If they work like coventry, all bodies get taken back to the depo in plastic bags to be put in the freezer for collection so they can use the centre for scanning so don't need more than two.

Some councils even publish on their website what animals they have picked up.

Councils really should try better!

I absolutely agree that he should give an estimate of these costs.

I remember discussing this with our local CP a few years ago and they said they had offered to buy the scanners and the council still refused to implement a system.
Our council does publish a list of animals found on the road online.

If only these councillors would give up a few fancy dinners or away days where they discuss how to make cost cuts they'd afford it no problem.

My Dad is on the council and will be lobbying our MP - and as he may well be the next PM that can only be a good thing!

I just wish that we had an option to express a "no vote" in elections an it was compulsory to vote, like, I believe the Australian laws demands, IMO there's be millions of ordinary folks doing this and that'd show the  :censored:s

It's called a recorded abstention and I wish we had it here too.  Some people who wish to record an abstention in this country do so by spoiling their ballot paper but obviously I wouldn't dream of suggesting that you do that as it is illegal.

As much as I complain about Canterbury Council, after Sharon spoke to them, they arranged a meeting with Serco and paid for 5 or 6 scanners.

No suprise here either . One of my biggest regrets is that I didn't emigrate from this country years ago, I'm so utterly sick and tired of politicians, their lies and their hypocracy and their version of democracy "Government by the few for the few", not much left to believe in in this country IMO. Still I suppose there might be a chance to do so in 15 years time when and if I am able to retire, that's one reason why i'm trying to but my own place so that I have something to sell for my retirement, a few happy years dangling my ribs in the sun in the company of cats, can't wait. A scanner costs around £100, hardly stressing the tax payers is it, maybe he should not claim for an essential second home or first class train tickets to make the money available

Am not surprised, just looked his name up on http://www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/crispin_blunt/reigate and he voted very strongly against the hunting ban    He did feel it necessary to sign the early day motion for fish and chip shop of the year though

I wrote to my MP to get him to support the movement to scan cats that are killed on the roads so that teh owners can be notified and I had an a letter back today. It looks like a standard response with my name and his signature added which shows me that a fair few people must have written to him about this too.
Basically he has put; that while he can appreciate how distressing it is to lose a cat, he can not put anymore pressure on tax payers by making this common place.

For those who are interested, I have typed the letter out:

Dear Miss Miller

Thank you for your letter dated 27th September regarding the Early Day Motion 079.

I appreciate that it is distressing to a family if a pet goes missing never to know what happened to their pets. I also understand that with improved technology and the growing use of microchips could potentially enable the identification o said pets. However, given that the use of microchips is not universal and given the costs that would be incurred by the local authority for the iplementation of the scheme as proposed I am afraid I cannot at this stage support EDM 2079.

Surrey County Council has responsibility for highways and their budget is currently sereverely stretched. The Government has consistently cut suppoyu to Surrey for essential services and this shortfall has had to be met by cuts elsewhere or by increasing reliance on additional funding from council Taxpayers. Given the current state of the public finances I can not support any commitments to additional funding funded nor would I want to place additional burdens on the taxpayer.

Thank you for taking the time to bring this issue to my attention.
