OMG thats allot of money a couple of times a week!!! (More than I have to live on!!!)

Oh no, that would be the price of a grooming session to remove knots. Once you've got rid of the knots and the coat has been throughouly groomed through, removing dead fur (which is one of the main contributors to matting), I'd then normally recommend follow up sessions to keep on top of it, every 6-8 weeks or so. If you can find a good groomer who will bath him as well, you really won't need to do much in the way of grooming in between times.

I might have to try a cheaper option 1st. Since the prices with utility bills have gone up, petrol, food (Prety much everything else too) ££ is really tight!

I'm going to order one of them combs in the link above.

Thanks for all your help  :Luv:

I would be so embaressed if Leo swiped the groomer in the face  :-[  I'm sure they are used to shirty cats though?

Anyone know how much they charge on average?

Yes, don't worry, we groomers are used to dodging the odd swipe LOL! but as I said, he might be entirely different with a prof groomer. I charge £30-£45, depending on whats got to be done, but I expect it varies from area to area, I'm in wiltshire.

Anyone know how much they charge on average? Ive just tried again to gently cut one of the tangles away.. he woke up & seemed relaxed then looked right into my eyes & I could tell he was going to scratch my face again! Why is he going for my face? Its quite disturbing.. think he is the devil in a gimger cat suit!!  :naughty:

Thanks everyone. I write with blood all over my lips where he has just swiped me! I do trim his claws regulaly as they grow very quickly but he has some weight behind them & they are HUGE. He has 2 deep matts now in the trouser dept.. & I can't get anywhere near them. He is far too strong for me to handle & Ive asked 2 separate friends to help last week & they gave up as he attacked them! If I leave them matts they are just going to get worse & worse arn't they?

My lips are really stinging  :tired: ...

Ouch!! they are strong arent they? I had a Maine Coon to groom (well, dematt really) the other week, and I think he's about 18 months old - big and strong!

Yes, the knots will get worse, did you think about a groomer to see if he's more amenable there? Or maybe invest in some clippers that will shave the mats off without too much fuss?

I have a 'safari shedding comb' - it really is magical, it has two different lengths of teeth so that one set takes out the loose hairs and the other take out the undercoat.  Tiggy was horthaired but the amount of undercoat fluff that came off her with this comb was unreal

If he gets a bit over enthusiastic with his claws then do you think he's tolerate having them clipped?  I trim the boys' claws as Riley likes to lay under the covers and poke me with his needle like claws and Lu likes to paddle on my knee so I have no choice but to trim them,  I started off doing it when they were little so they got used to it, Riley does struggle now when I do it but as long as you hold them firmly then it's over with in under a minute.

The problem you're going to have is getting through to the undercoat as most brushes etc will not go down that fur.  They'll groom the top coat nicely but you'll need a comb to get down to the undercoat which is where the knots will form.  I don't have many suggestions I'm afraid as I have an easy care cat!  No undercoat so no knots  ;D

Lisa,

Dot hates me doing the back of her legs and "britches", also her tum.  Try and get a comb which has tines of differing lengths - not the ones with big wide tines at one end and narrow ones at the other - the comb you want has small and large tines alternately.

I bribe Dot heavily while grooming.  If I put a small amount of cat treats on the floor, I can usually do most of her back end while she is concentrating on snaffling treats.  To do her tum I kneel on the floor and put her between my legs (without gripping), with her back towards me and then I lift her gently by the scruff of her neck and quickly comb her tum and chest.  To do under her chin, I hold a cat treat above her and as she reaches for it I keep hold of the treat in one hand while quickly combing with the other.

It doesn't work perfectly and she always swings for me at least a couple of times but it's OK.  We do play afterwards and I think that helps.  The other thing that helps is being really firm about grooming.  Dot knows that if it starts, there's no way I'm giving up until either the job's done or I've passed out through blood loss.

Hope some of this helps.

C.

Misa is a big longhaired boy and I couldnt groom him either and he had loads of little knots and if I went near them it was owwwwwww owwwwwwww and if I dint stop it was swish with a paw without claws and then wallop with full claws.

He also gets big matts in his trousers every year, no matter what I do.

So I started brushing him gently which is useless as a grooming procedure but |I wanted him to understand that I wasnt gonna hurt him and was more like stroking and then I would do a little combing in a safe place, no legs or tummy.

he always knows where the bad bits are cos he lies on them LOL.

I decided that I am not gonna try and groom out any knots or tangles at all but cut them off. Have to be very careful and make sure you are nowhere near the skin. Once the top of tangle has gone then its easier to play with it with fingers to point of no more tolerence. This helps to get the bottom to open and then gradually it becomes combable without hurting.

Time, a long time and finally last month all tangles were gone including trouser matts. They dont like being groomed cos it hurts if you catch a knot or tangle accidentally but once he had none he was happy to be groomed.

However he keeps going out and gets burrs and little slugs and then they become the start of more problems and he is not very tolerent of being groomed, so prob will have to start all over again............sigh

Hi Lisa, lovely to see you and the lovely Leo.

No tips on grooming im afraid - the Benglies basically do it all themselves.  When I had my persians (RIP babies) they would let my OH groom them but they only had to see a brush in my hand and they would turn into Tasmanian Devils.

Leo is getting harder & harder to groom. Ive spent so much money on different types of brushes but as time goes on the less he tolerates it. Ive been scratched on my face on numerous occasions,(He has BIG old claws too) he kicks with his back legs & it sounds like I'm murdering him! I'm not heavy handed or rough when I try to do it but its getting to the point now where I'm having to cut matted knots out as he just won't let me go near him..

I should imagine he's just getting his adult coat now coiniciding with moulting and getting his winter coat - recipe for knots LOL! Maybe he'd be better going to a professional groomer? quite often I find that cats who won't be groomed by their owners, are fine when they come to me. Just a thought. Have a look here http://www.mainecoonguild.org.uk/Grooming/grooming.html this is what the Maine Coon guild recommends to use for grooming.
