It seems they hadn't meant to let him out and he did escape. I didn't lecture too much as it was the older teenage daughter who came for him and I only know her Mum as a casual acquaintance. I don't want to cause bad blood and this way I can still enquire about him.

Pleased to say kitty's owner saw the posters and came to collect him so he is home safe and sound. Now back to the search for adult cat No. 5

Oh how lovely.  I hope they keep the kitten under a more careful watch from now on.  But at least it had a happy ending, an owner being reunited with their cat.

Fingers crossed her owners will show, but if not...looks like someone has adopted you!  Crookie did that to me, and she was the most loving cat I have had the pleasure to know.  She passed on yesterday, and although I have two more cats (each rescued) she was extra special as she turned up on my door...and chose to live with me.

I hope it all turns out for the best.

Thanks for all the info. I have a dog crate and ended up putting her in that and keeping her warm and dry. I think the little mite has escaped and doesn't know her way home. She is clearly very used to being handled and is craving human contact. She also seemed very hungry. My Mum said she noticed a kitten missing poster in a local supermarket so I'm going in to take a look later to see if it matches.

I am thinking of cat number 5 but I want an adult and I do think someone out there is probably really missing this little kitten.

I put posters up on lampposts on the footpath and road (which is a country lane where lots of people walk dogs) so fingers crossed. I just said I had found a kitten and asked if you were missing one to call at the house address - I didn't give a description as want to be sure its the right people who turn up for her.

I don't think a kitten that young should be out and about on its own at all but kept inside until after its been neutered (that's the same age as our two when we got them in the October and I certainly didn't let them out until about March well after their ops, once the weather was better and it was lighter).

Werent you looking for a 5th cat? 
People who leave such a young cat out on its own dont deserve to have pets  so unless missing posters go up with a suitable reason behind her wandering about then i personally wouldnt be trying too hard to find out where she cam from.

 Cats Protection gives the following advice out when people think they have found a cat.

If you have a cat living with you or visiting and think is either lost, abandoned, the owner has moved and left it behind, or appears to be just roaming around, sadly all too common and to think the cats/s was the result of someone’s so called good home, or you know of anyone else with such a cat DO NOT ASSUME IT HAS NO OWNER (OR ASSUME IT HAS), PLEASE REPORT IT TO AS MANY RESCUES AS POSSIBLE IMMEDIATELY (see:- http://www.catchat.org/adoption/index.html) for some in your area. EVEN IF IT LOOKS IN PERFECT HEALTH, PLEASE THINK HOW YOU WOULD FEEL IF YOU LOST YOUR CAT AND SOMEONE DID NOT BOTHER TO REPORT IT.

It may simply be lost and could have been lost months previously. It is not unknown for cats to get into cars, removal vans, and so on, and be transported miles from their homes. Rescues have hundreds of cats on their lost/found register and the number increases on a daily basis. Most of the cats who go missing must be out there somewhere and, although we do manage to reunite quite a few with their owners, most of them are taken in or being fed by well meaning people, but are never actually reported.

Depending on the condition of the cat and the safety of the location rescues can decide what course of action to take to ensure the cat receives all the help it needs. E.G. if the cat is well please your local rescues and ask them to check the lost list, take the cat to a vet to see if has been micro chipped.

If there is no record and the cat is well and not in a dangerous location perhaps you could on a long thin piece of paper write do I belong to you and your telephone number then attach the paper to a cat collar by wrapping sellotape round and round then put the collar on the cat if after 3 days you have received no reply take the collar off as many are considered dangerous and many cats have lost their life to them. Safer paper collars are available free from Cats Protection. Ring the local rescues and ask them to put the cat on the list waiting to come in.

Please offer the cat shelter & feed it, I know some organizations say don't and they it will move on, however in our view that is callous, I am sure if you lost a pet it would be nice to think someone, somewhere was caring for it. Also the cat has a greater chance of finding its owner or coming into care and finding a new permanent home, as it is not roaming from street to street looking for its next meal and endangering its life. If the cat appears below par please contact a local rescue immediately and ask if they will pay for the cat to be seen by a vet and if possible take the cat in.

So many people place a notice in a shop saying ‘FOUND’ etc, please remember that if the cat is going home even if only once a week as far as the owner is concerned they have not lost it so may not realise you are talking about their cat.

If the cat is timid and you cannot catch it most rescues have traps, at least then the little one can be taken to the vets to scan, have a MOT, flea and worm treatment etc, if unneutered Cats Protection can give vouchers for the cost. If feral you could ask rescues to try to find suitable homes for them. Although many cats people call feral are in fact what I call garden cats and that is cats that were once domesticated but then let down by society, these cats usually tame down very quickly once in a home.

on the lost and found section I think sam has some tips, pretty much the same as if you've lost one, posters etc, depends if you've the room to keep her until the owner is found - if its definitely a girl I doubt if it is neutered yet

I've been out in my garden all morning and a little kitten that looks no more than 12-14 weeks old has stayed round us all morning. When we tried to come in she keeps following us indoors and won't go home. There is a fairly large development above me so she could have come from anywhere. I tried asking in the houses nearest me but no-one knows anything about her. She has a collar and is very tame. No ID tags. I've put her in a cat carrier for now as I'm afraid of her going onto the nearby road.

My vet said they would scan her for a chip.

What's the best thing to do with her? Keep her in the carrier and safe or let her out, possibly putting her at risk, and hoping she finds her way home?
