As you probably know, I do almost full time voluntary work with Manchester Dogs Home.  At their crem they do things as the owner wishes.  Whatever you want, within reason and health and safety guidelines, they will arrange.  This is a terrible subject to have to discuss but I hope you can find a place that will cater to your wishes for dignity.

When it is his time, we want to take him ourselves rather than have him collected by strangers or even as part of a weekly 'waste' collection. I couldn't do that. I must be sure in my mind that all is done properly and with dignity.
I hope that we can still have plenty time together, but I want to be sure of what to do when it happens as otherwise things could be done in a rush.

Swampy woke up a short while ago and purred all the way through doing a new paw impression for his photo frame (bless you and thank you again Tan xx). As he's weak and arthritic, the imprints aren't very deep or clear but they are still just wonderful to have.  He's calm at the moment, so I hope that he has a better night. Happy purrs everyone

When we had our dog PTS the vets arranged everything. He was sent off for a single cremation and then we collected his ashes from the vet a week later. He came back in a lovely wooden box with a card and a certificate to say it was his ashes only
Do you want to take Swampy there yourself and wait kate ? (this is so hard to talk about )

Same as our Pets crematorium, ours arrange for you to go and pick up the ashes and there is a Memory book for you to sign, I re read gracies entry when I made Gems and it was bitter sweet but my tortie girls are at the bridge together.

That sounds exactly like the procedure with our vets Gillian even down to the casket - apart from the card.

Usually your vet practice arranges everything with the crematorium - well certainly they do round here. Our practice use a fairly local pet crematorium in Bristol. The vet usually asks what you want i.e individual cremation and how you want the remains returned i.e. wooden casket, which is what I usually have, with the name of the animal on a brass plaque - then the vet deals with everything from then on and I collect the ashes from them when they are returned. http://www.companionshaven.co.uk/contact.php - they are a family concern they always send a lovely handwritten card with the casket.

thanks Mark. We're going to have to call them all and get definite answers to what's most important, the individual aspect and the ability to wait and come home. It's such a horrible subject, makes me feel sick.

That dexa injection seems to be wearing off, touch wood. They were cleaning each other and have gone to sleep all curled up together on the futon, Swampy with his chin on Max's ample tum, which is so wonderful. Swampy has eaten and I've helped him to the water and tray so although he's circling still with no change, at least he is less manic at the moment.
xx

I only know of the one in Kent that has a very good reputation. I know they collect from the vet next door to me and I have seen them put things in the van. It is done properly and they are placed gently into the van.

I believe Philip and dont know where he is, did a lot of research on this and what you need to ask them I think, is do they do single cremations cos thats what you are looking for I think.

I think Gillian may know something about this too, it may be an idea to pm both or even start a new thread so those who havent been posting on this one will see it.

I am sure there must be somewhere around the outskirts of London.

I think Helen is another one who may be able to help cos of Tiggy but she is not in London but they maybe able to give you some leads.

they both have a website which I've checked. They do all veterinary waste as well. There's another company Dignity who prey on my worst fears when they say that they only do pets, not vet waste. I may be fussing for no good reason. The vet (what is it with medical people?!) said we must think now as when the time comes, it could be difficult with London having so many pets and my OH not getting off work easily, then he said he recommended CPC as "they do all our waste". He's so kind but what a crass thing to say! I told the nurse and she said oh dear and btw they don't, it's Silvermere, so he delegates it all to the nurses as I suppose most vets do. They've not had problems with either company, so it's our decision. I just wondered if anyone else had used either company. OH rang Silvermere and said they sounded ok, but how to know. I just couldn't bear it if anything went wrong and I do find Murphy's Law works a lot of the time.

The boys started grooming so I popped the pill down before they nodded off again. I'll feed him when he wakes up though as it's just lovely to see him zzzzing, he's been so jumpy all day.

at last he's gone to sleep as managed to get Max and him into the igloo and Max has stayed. (keeping the heating off right now so it's warmest for him with Swampy!). Of course it's meds time but I am just going to wait until he wakes up for the vivitonin.

on a horrible topic, OH works and has asked that we know what to do when the time comes and how best it is organised, so nothing goes wrong and he can take off work and we can go ourselves. Does anyone know anything about either Silvermere in Cobham, Surrey or CPC in Cambridge please? They both are open only monday to friday and what is a bit distressing, if understandable, you have to get there before 11am so the final vet visit has to be the evening before.  I can't bear to think about this, but it has to be done.

On a happier note, it is lovely to hear snoring xx to all

the sleeping thing is a point, my Schui sleeps much less since he had the steroid injection and he's a cat who can sleep 24/7, my dad is the same when he's steroids too.

He sits and rests on the futon or in his igloo. I hope that will change later on as I am sure he is mighty tired.
The Proot behaved in a similar way when he was having a large dose of Prednisoline - and I've had steroids in the past which had the same effect on me, was exhausted and could rest but not sleep.  Hoep he gets some snoozes soon.

I've looked at the diary and there doesn't seem to be a pattern at present, unlike before. I am waiting to see if there is any change once that dexa jab wears off (by tonight I think). He was calm until 2am but since then has not been able to sleep. Mostly I have to help him find things too. I gave him his steroids at 6 this morning. Don't know if that means he may be hyper again this evening. He's not hyper now, but just not able to sleep. He sits and rests on the futon or in his igloo. I hope that will change later on as I am sure he is mighty tired. Max is not curling up with him much now - some of that is that he wants the other room with better sun, some is jealousy, but some is also I think he senses Swampy's not himself. Will see how things go today before emailing the vet an update later.
lots of love from us all xx

He is calmer tonight thank goodness. His agitation and circling when he needs help to find the tray is a bit more predictable. I decided to hold off on the steroids until the morning which I hope is the right decision.
Hope all of you have a peaceful night, wrapped up warm with your little ones. Thanks again to everyone for the much needed support, we are overwhelmed with everyone's help and caring for Swampy
