The SAD lights are fine for people as no doubt the amount of light is a lot stronger than you would get from a regular bulb - but the SAD light boxes are no better than a SAD lightbulb that costs about £10 because that is all they have in them.

As for the normal light bulb, I was also thinking 100w - just important that it isn't pearl - although you don't seem to see many non pearl ones now. I hope he is right - he said "full spectrum" which should include UV as well as visible light?

It almost sounds too simple to be correct and if it was anyone else telling me I would have taken it with a pinch of salt.

I was going to say brilliant  :wow:. (er, just did). Many thanks Mark for asking your lecturer, that's so kind of you. So I must just place an ordinary, clear light right above where he is sleeping, maybe a 100W one?

I was in Comet today and looked at their little infra red heating panel thing (for aches and pains!), but you have to be about 10cms away from it to get any heat, so that's no good. So does all this mean that the SAD lights are a huge con and we should just buy up old stock of old non energy saving bulbs for our 'bright' rooms then? I must order them in before they're discontinued as the clocks go back on sunday and it will be dark at 4pm again for months (WAIL). I'll have to join Swampy under the light bulb!
thanks

Good news  :)

We did light in Physics today so I spoke to my lecturer about your light issue. I told him you can't have fluorescent re flickering. Amazingly, he said the best thing to use is a plain old-fashioned non energy saving light bulb but it has to be a clear one as the frosted ones block certain wavelengths. He said the clear unfrosted ones give out pretty much the full spectrum. He had just given us a lecture on every kind of light from Gamma to radio waves - he is a Doctor of Physics so hopefully we can take his word for it  :evillaugh:

This would cover the wide arc issue  :)

Good news on that front yes, but my little man won't eat, which is unusual on the steroids. I'll try again later but the paw came out and went NO, not having that and he's gone back to sleep. Possibly still feeling green from his whoops 2 hours ago and no zentonil.
Yes when the router was offline (it still is) my first thought was 'purrs!!!!' and only then ' how am I going to pay what I owe"?!

and he trotted down the passage and I followed him and my little wonderman has popped himself on to the bed, all by himself! I nearly burst into tears to be honest. Plus he had a good night and didn't wake me - I opened my eyes to find OH cuddling him in the kitchen at 6am,,

Oh thats sounding very positive, perhaps he is slowly adjusting to his disabilities and with the meds (and all your TLC of course!) he's feeling better generally in himself.

Star man and good on your neighbour, I couldn't get by without my Swampy diary fix.  Glad to hear he is doing so well in his venturing and hope he managed to keep his Fortekor down when he sicked up.  Big head butt to him and to Max for being such a good boy too.  Glad you got some sleep.  Banking should be ok if the Wifi is secure

helloooo, my internet connection crashed last night so my ISP and BT are still looking into it  >:(  neighbour has lent me his wifi password cos I told him I just had to log on to purrs  ;D (I have to do some banking but don't think it's safe on wifi?!).

Swampy was walking around when I got back from the shops, he'd puked up his zentonil on the carpet as he'd helped himself to Max's RC dry - I think they are a bit big, he's better on j/d - and he trotted down the passage and I followed him and my little wonderman has popped himself on to the bed, all by himself! I nearly burst into tears to be honest. Plus he had a good night and didn't wake me - I opened my eyes to find OH cuddling him in the kitchen at 6am,, so I must have been pretty tired. I don't know how long this will last as I'm very aware of the whole rollercoaster and steroids masker thing, but oh it is just great.
lots of purrs and love to everyone for prayers, vibes and other funny PFFFSSSSTTT noises and to all of you a huge  :grouphug:

Mystery: the zentonil was almost intact despite being swallowed at 8am. The Fortekor (there is no obvious sign of it) was munched at 10am. Has it been heave-ho'ed as well? I won't give it again but hope he doesn't whoops up his steroids and vivitonin later. xx
hope I can keep getting online as well!

the vet says high(er) doses of steroids long term cause problems with organ damage and possibly even diabetes. Also long term use in people can cause mental problems. He explained the potential side effects but I'm tired and didn't take it all in, except the gist which is to try Swampy on a lower dose if things are still like this in 10 days time ie try him with the same dose but every 2 days. The best dose is the lowest effective dose though so I think if he deteriorated, that he would be put back on the current dose. But when the vet heard that Swampy was doing unexpectedly better the last 3 days he said not to let him have dry J/d at night, but just k/d. So I said that he gets k/d all day and it's only at night because I can't leave k/d out all night or it goes hard, he eats it and then gets sick - so J/d is senior food and as long as Swampy can find the water bowl and enjoys it, why not? If he had to be helped to eat, I'd give him wet food k/d but this way I get some rest and he finds and eats and enjoys some nosh at night (4 - 5am at the moment)!
Sadly the heatpad won't fit in the igloo so it's just a hottie and a couple of those vetbed things but it seems warm in there!
xx

I wonder why the steroids have to be reduced if he is doing so well on them, dont they give him a better quality of life?

Hope that Swampy is all nice and warm cos the nights are drawing in and as soon as the sun goes its cold

Hi there, I'm waiting to hear from the vet on steroid dose etc. I sent him a long email with a Swamp update. I know the steroids aren't good for him as such, but he's been so improved since sunday on the higher dose - walking in mostly straight lines, finding his tray, food and water and generally happier. And (touch wood) his cold's not flared up too badly on them yet either (which was predicted). This morning he did a wee bit of circling to the left this time, but has combined being a little bit wobblier with being very active. A touch hyper and miaowy but I think it's frustration, not anything else.
The boys definitely stayed in the igloo first up (we had a 6am start but he'd been up and munching J/d dry since about 5) but the sun's out nicely now.
lots of xx and

current 1 1/2 pred is for 2 weeks, then we have to try to lower it to every 2 days if all is going well obviously. I must go and try to calm him as he is miaowing and pacing again today (but did have a purr). Will try to get him back into that igloo where da Max is zzzzzing, sensible lad.xx

He is wonderful and brings a smile to my face with the tales of his little adventures.  I remember when my dog was on a multitude of pills and Dragan too used a doseit box to keep track and a record sheet to track poos etc!  Felt like a nurse some of the time but so what, they were both worth it as I am sure you know.  Keep up the good days Swampy, more good than bad is what we want to hear.

glad Swampy had been good  ;D and the steroids do often work wonders our Schui's appetite increased so much about a fortnight after the steriod injection, it's hard to believe he was so low a few months back.

Morning! Swampy has had loads of pills during the last few years of his life, so is a maniac at working out what is treat and what is pill - so now we just shove 'em down. Defurrum though - does it need chewing? (don't think that would work). This morning he's been quite bright eyed and bushy tailed (since 5am - better than last night's 3am mind you ) and it's certainly true that steroids improve appetite. He's been walking straight and even tried to open the closed lounge door so hopefully he will stay like this all day. The sun has arrived so maybe a little of that to lie in a bit later. He found the tray but put his tush over the edge so (with Max regurging his brekker) I've had the cloths out this am.
time for a  :tea: now that zentonil, fortekor and kaminox (only 1/2 spat out this am!) all done....lots of love to everyone xx
