Glad he seems to be a little more settled now and that he's been using the loo properly.  We still have everything crossed.  Hope you manage to get a little sleep tonight and that Swampy has a good night.

Poor Swampy.  Glad he's had a sleep.  It must be horrible for you watching him like this.  I hope he will settle down when he realises he's home among familiar things and people.

When my Bridge baby Guinness had a bad convulsion the emergency vet said to keep the tv off and the lights low and keep her as quiet as possible so it sounds like you are doing all the right things.  Must be so stressful and worrying for you all.  Hope tomorrow brings a big improvement

my heart goes out to Swampy and you

Kocka had detached retinas and therefore had on off blindness, she used to get very distressed when she went blind and her sight wasnt good anyway but try not to move things in the room unless necessary and if Swamp is having probs with sight and is deaf , then he needs to be able to plot his way around if he is moving.

Often they will use walls to guide themselves around.

Oh that is good news, the sleep will have done him good, eating and drinking is good too, has he had a pee or poo yet?

Poor soul he must be so confused and poor you as well, it's just so upsetting when they get themselves in a state and you can't console them or explain things to them....

It really sounds as though you are doing the absolute best that you can and giving him the best chance to get through this, the rest is beyond our control sadly.

Still sending good thoughts for you all.

he finally fell asleep in my arms as I picked him up in desperation. He slept for an hour or so against me. I have the carrier the vet lent me, but he finds that stressful too. I will try to keep the room gloomy and am confining him to the lounge. I will just have to try picking him up after he's paced for a while but will keep the carrier and towel to cover it handy just in case. I'm hoping by the morning (with no fits, please God) he will have got used to the lounge. How long do you think it should take? He clearly recognised my OH when he came home as woke up and started to purr. I was also worried that all the sudden exercise and stress would trigger a fit. Very tricky. The cortisone he had yesterday with the valium have made him manically hungry - we are feeding him quite a bit without stuffing him on the basis that a full tum = less stress.
Is that right?

PS he's deaf so can't get used to any sounds unfortunately. I'm hoping the lounge will be less stressful than the hospital cage.

PPS OH rolled out a futon mattress normally used as our sofa and he's gone to lie down on it (hopefully, hopefully a good sign) although is lying in a crazy position with his nose and head straight down on the blanket. I'll be sleeping on it tonight (or lying on it tonight). Max is displeased and is mostly keeping his distance but also hissyfitting although as Swamp is deaf it doesn't SEEM to bother him.

Might seem cruel but is there any way you could put him in a carrier or something to stop him getting agitated or coming to any harm, just so he might get some badly needed sleep.

Yes, i think I agree he might be best confined in a carrier for now if you don't think that would upset him more, difficult to know what to do for the best I'm sure.

I know he has just come out of a cage, but have you one that you could pop him back into just so he gets used to the sights and sounds of home again. If he gets too stressed it could kick off another fit.

If not happy with that a darkened room somewhere?

He is showing signs of brain damage and the confusion and pacing indicates that there is still some swelling. Humans get very agitated as the brain swells. It will seem new to him as he no doubt has some amnesia as well, if too concerned call the emergency vets on the best way to handle him.

Seems like there is a visual impairment as well, damage to the cortex perhaps?

Good luck with him.

Sending all the best to you and Swampy.

I remember when we had cats in the hospital who were suffering from fits/convulsions, we used to keep the lighting very low as it was felt bright lights could bring the fitting on.  Don't know if this is a help but thought it was worth mentioning to you.  Lots of    to you both.

an hour now. I can't stop him pacing and miaowing and longer yowling. I'm scared he will exhaust himself and trigger a fit. At the vets he just sat in a cage of course. I've shut him just in the lounge/kitchen area. Sprayed feliway. He walks all round the room, in and out of pootrays and into walls all the time. I can't hold him or get him to purr or calm down at all.

very quick post for obvious reasons: the vet says no-one is at the surgery all weekend so Swampy has been disconnected from his saline drip and sent home. He ate like a madman - in a frenetic way he's never eaten before and miaowing, yowling but walking slowly around. He saw a piece of tape I was moving and batted at it - but then walked straight into a door and a wall and through a pootray without seeing it. The vet says we must nurse him over the weekend, not leave him alone at all (as if I would) and has given me a 1ml valium syringe for his bum if he has any fits at all - then it's the emergency vet.
I am pretty terrified as he is still very unwell. Vet said he may have had some small strokes as well but that he'd be depressed all alone in hospital from now until monday. Then we can re-assess on monday if he doesn't need emergency treatment at the weekend, which of course he might. Typing v fast as must go and nurse.
The vet said Swampy nearly died yesterday so we may have a horrible decision to take quite soon as it will depend in a week or less on how he copes with being brain damaged.

So lovely as it is to see his little face in the flat, please keep thinking of us and if you have any suggestions, let me know please. This is so unexpected. I had thought he would be in hospital for about a week.

PS he doesn't seem to recognise the lounge or the flat at all either. Hyper agitated. Hope the vet knows what he's doing.

still no word from the vet but the nurse thinks Swampy's stable, but with no real progress. As you say dabs, it looks like being a terribly tense wait. I hope to hear from the vet in a couple of hours after he's finished ops. In the meantime, I've been spending a lot of time looking at this pic taken so recently of my little Wampa sitting with Max. I hope it posts ok. The compass was after I read that cows all stand due north according to google earth, so I was playing with them and wanted to see if my 2 boys did the same. My Swamp is the bravest boy I've ever known - he's had a big op in Aug 06, cholangiohep in Sept 07 and now this, plus travelled across continents twice. It's a comfort to know how you understand just how hard this is.

The legs issue may be due to the fact that there is some pressure on the spinal nerves that tell the legs what to do or there is some pressure on the brain. With this it is a case of wait and see to see what happens when any swelling on brain/spine goes down. Not very comforting I know, but in things like this it is a waiting game I am afraid.  :(

Tragic thing to happen for you and hom, hope all goes well.
