It is good that he had a restful night and has eaten. I do not know, of course, but my instinct would be to agree with Sue: do not rush things, just let Swampy gradually recover in his own time. I can imagine you feel as if you ought to be doing something, but I suspect that by being there with him, you are doing what you can.

You are back to the vet tomorrow, arent you (I forgot to check the earlier part of the thread before posting this)?

Am so glad you had a quiet night. As cats sometimes purr when they're in pain, an absence of purring may not necessarily be an absence of content, but more an absence of discomfort. Because he's suffered brain trauma, it will take time for things to settle back to normal, so weakness and wobbliness are not uncommon. I would just do what you've been doing, keeping an eye on it to monitor how he is, but I wouldn't try to rush things, particularly given the fact it's a weekend, and your full veterinary services aren't available. I think he's done so well so far, as have you and your OH. Keep up the good work. Loving care has done more to restore many a soul back to good health, animal and human.

yes we had a quiet night thanks. He ate quite well this morning too. He is still fairly unresponsive with purrs and his legs are very weak. Maybe that's the lack of cortisone giving him a boost too? Just going to sit with him today but I wondered if I should try to get him to walk a bit or not, sort of to prevent him getting even weaker? I'm not quite sure how much he can see either. I hope so much that he is improving by being calmer but guess it's still too soon to know. xx

think the cortisone is wearing off. He got IV of it of a short acting one and isn't on any tabs at home. He didn't eat as well tonight, actually left some and is sleeping really soundly pretty much all the time. I haven't been able to get a purr out of him for some hours now. I've noticed that his normal, favourite under the chin rub isn't happening as he doesn't want it - think the back of his neck must be so sore that he doesn't want to lift his head, which is why he sleeps nose down too maybe?

It depends on the extent of the swelling, but the reason for the steroids is to reduce the swelling as the brain will press against the skull and will cause further issues as the shull is pretty tough. He will eat and pee like no tomorrow due to the steriods so this is normal for a cat on steriods.

Are you still giving him steriods at home?

I know... you poor thing, I bet everytime he wakes up you are hoping he will be back to himself again and when he's not it must be so upsetting. but it's still early days, it probably takes time for brains to return to how they should be which is probably why the vet is talking in terms of next week.

I can't comment on brain swelling in cats but in 2005 my daughter caught viral encaphalitis which caused her brain to swell. She was unconscious for 5 days and then behaved in an extremely bizarre manner for the next three months. She received large doses of steroids and I am more than happy to report that she is fully recovered now. Let's hope Swampy responds as well as my daughter but, hopefully, in a much shorter time. I, too, have been regularly checking for updates and have remember you and Swampy in my prayers.

Yes I'm sure you are right Kris. Every minute feels like an hour and you just want him to 'get better'. The vet says he doesn't know exactly what's wrong (no MRI) so it's hard to know how to treat. Anyhow he will stay confined in 1 room for now and lots of TLC.

Like everyone else I had to come here first thing to find out how his night went... I can't help but feel that eating, drinking, peeing and pooing are all great signs but I'm not an expert on head injury/brain inflammation, from a quick google, corticosteroids are used to reduce inflammation in the brain but I would assume that the most important thing at the moment is to ensure/hope he doesn't have any more fits and beyond that it may just be time but hopefully others will know more.

I'd hope that regardless of age the vet would give you the best advice possible and perhaps there is no other treatment beyond time now and being at home with familiarity and calm is the best place for that to happen... but maybe you need vet advice to put your mind at rest.

Swamps had a reasonable night. We spent the night on the futon mattress with him (OH snored, he can sleep anywhere, unlike me!). He spent 2 hours taking off his leg bandage (from the drip) and had the odd pace and yowl, but otherwise slept or rested at least. This morning he is very like he was straight after the accident -ie restless still and pacing unless you hold him or sit with him on the futon. He's peed (and drunk) lots - 3 pees so far this am, one of them huge - and eaten at 6am in 30 secs what he'd normally take at least 10 mins to eat - then told me he wanted more (howls). But I can't overfeed him. The restless, little miaow, some yowling, pacing and settling on futon + appetite is just like thursday. So maybe it means some improvement but I still feel that if he was a younger cat there'd be less of the 'take him home for the weekend and we'll make the big decision next week' about this. Plus if he was a human, he'd still be in hospital obviously.

There's the vets now group who cover a/h. They are only for stabilising animals so he would have to go there if he has another fit or deteriorates. My vet says I can text him.

Does anyone know if brain swelling or inflammation goes down eventually on its own, or do you need a drip and diuretic (or anti inflammatory or whatever) drugs? I'm hoping to speak to the vet after his surgery this morning and before they close at 12. He is a sole prac vet so gets very busy.
Swampy has just lain down by himself while I type so that is good....but he won't be left alone at all this weekend. Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers for the wee boy.

and purr from him too. The miaowing has just restarted and I can't calm him with voice (deaf) so time to log out. xx

Would he settle in a dog crate? I understand how distressing it is to see them constantly pacing and walking through things, when ^george^ got ill he got to the point where he would walk through the water bowl and then the trays

he had CNS trouble from FIP.
I used to try and settle him in the one room on a big folded throw, i would often find him stuck in the shoe rack tho so any small gaps like that i would reccomend you fill so he doesnt do the same thing.

Still very much thinking of you. I cannot imagine how awful this must be for all of you but it also seems to me that as Swampy works through his confusion and illness, he must be very comforted by the fact that he is with his hoomans and is being nursed so well by them. It must be reassuring to him, I'm sure.
