The locum vet is coming around later this morning to give Swampy a dexamethasone injection. It's an anti inflammatory to help with any swelling in the brain. He said it's a bit risky but with symptoms like Swampy has, he feels it is a better try than increasing the tablet dose as doesn't feel that will help. The injection lasts just a few days apparently. I asked if he should have an antibiotic again too, to help with his cold as all the immuno suppressants may kick in a terrible cold, which negates any possible positives.
Swampy's at last gone to sleep in his igloo.

My vet is away again until wednesday this week but the locum is going to call me. I suggested to the nurse having a visit and upping cortisone and at least trying to make Swampy comfortable until wednesday.
He was very bad in the night, up all night and circling. He's not eaten as well either. He found the tray once and the water once, but not again and also couldn't get back. He goes round and round faster and faster, sometimes he sits down to recover, then it starts again and I rescue him. The vet had told me to let him circle a bit as it helps his dizziness, but it's so so hard as I know you understand.
The sun's out and I'm hoping that at least he can have a little snooze today in the warmth. When I rescue him from circling, he purrs with relief and still loves being cuddled and kissed. Oh, he has just found his way back to the igloo! He is fighting so hard that I must let him have cortisone - who cares if it's a high dose if it gives him even a day or two of relief.
xx everyone

I agree, our vet said it's better not to give Schui steroid if can help it with kidney probs but we agreed better quality of life than quantity at his age.  I can see where the vets coming from re letting him circle that must be like a natural reaction to help him and his purring when you help him is probably that comfort too, it must be hard for you xx  hope he has a better day today

All I can say is when Schui used to have steroid injections for his gum problems to boost him it always took at least 2 weeks then he improved no end, his appetite, inflammation and health in general.  it got to the point where it seemed he had a build up and was very well for longer periods of time.  Then he had his teeth out so it wasn't needed.  His nasal problems however recently got worse and he was diagnosed with CRF and has been given a steroid injection and again nothing for 2 wks but since then he very much improved although he does still have off days occasionally.  So I can't say he has needed higher doses if anything less in my experience although our vet has said in the past that there are different doses so maybe Swampy does need a higher dose as they usually give them a lower dose so they can up it.  Best of luck x

yes i believe that is one of the problems with steroids, i know it definately is with steroids used in humans on skin but would have thought its far too early for swampy to have to have got to this point.

it maybe of course that his condition has worsened and just needs a bigger dose. seem to recall that you said that the oral dose was not as big as the injected dose but dont know if its possible orally to have the same size dose.

afraid only a vet can answer this i think cos i am only speculating.

i hope that the vet will say that swampy can have bigger dose cos its his quality of life that matters more than long term effects i think.

my very bestest wishes to you, max and swampy

We are back where we were before the last 2 weeks. Swampy is quite content, purring, cleaning Max and himself a bit as long as he is on the futon or in his igloo. As soon as he starts to walk around, he becomes stressed and walks in circles to the right. Needing the tray is the most stressful; however tonight he found it easily, but then walked round and round it, bumping into it and becoming distressed and needing rescue. He's not eaten quite as well today either but as he ate well this morning, it's ok. He's slept a lot today too, which I suppose is good. I will have to ring the vet first up tomorrow. I wish the vet had seen him when he was so good as without that, it is hard to compare - but he wasn't going to do a home visit to see a cat doing a lot better.

Does anyone know if cats can develop a tolerance to a dose of steroids, so that they need more to get the same effect? The only thing I can think to do is to increase the dose. It was just a couple of days ago that he made it on to the bed by himself so this sudden deterioration is a shock. More so because this time I don't think he had a brain 'episode' or bleed (but can't be sure, but don't think so). I will have to be up every time he gets up tonight which probably will be quite often as he slept all day!  Night and lots of love and purrs to you all for sending him all the help in the world   xx

Hi, I've been up since 5am with little Swamp as he started circling badly again around the chair leg, to the right again like last time, and wobbling over and needing rescue. He did find his water somehow a couple of times but not walking straight. Of course I'd got my hopes up as he's been good for a couple of weeks now. I've now got him to eat and got him into the igloo with a hottie as he was up and off each time I settled him down earlier. I'll just spend today looking after him -  raining and dark here - and hope that he is just having an off one, although the time it happened is such a worry as that is when his steroids are at their maximum so he's supposed to be at his best. Please send him lots of prayers and vibes again and we all send big  :hug:s
Max is upset too, seems to know something's wrong although I've been making a fuss of him too. xx

good morning from the Swampcamp! We had a bit of peace and quiet until 6am, with Swampy managing to find the tray (and someone found the food!) overnight and we are now, very sensibly, in the igloo.

Good for Swampy! Hope he's still trundling round more today and has recovered his appetite.  Also agree that he should be allowed to eat what he likes (except perhaps Max's food  :evillaugh:).
