Thank you all for your caring words.

I'm currently flutuating between knowing the choice my partner and I had to make was difficult but necessary and feeling like I should have tried something, anything to help her. But the vet said she really didn't think there was anything else to try.

It's so awful that she went through the operations so recently only to have this happen to her. Nature can be so cruel sometimes, I thought we'd have the pleasure of sharing our home with her for at least another few years. The other four seem to know something's happened, but they aren't entirely sure what.

And you're right, Sam. She'll be missed huge amounts; I already miss the chin nips she used to give me as her way of kissing.

Definately news, but not good I'm afraid. Parsley had suffered a stroke, they tried to treat it with steroids, but she only perked up temporarily and then her condition worsened. She was vomiting blood and struggling to breath and after we were told there was nothing more that could be done for her, my partner and I couldn't let her suffer anymore.

RIP, Parsley. I hope you know how much you were loved, and how much of a gap you'll leave in our family.

Yes, she is still wearing it. She has had a cyst removed from the area, blood tests and a biopsy as well as numerous steroid injections and creams. Everytime she has a operation or scratches she then has to keep the collar on again for weeks until it heals and then within a short time she scratches it again. She is only 10 months old and has been wearing it permanently for 5 months. This is why we are off to see a specialist, our vet says she could try different foods but it would be trial and error and her main priority now is to get the cone off her.

I really hope they work for your cat, please let me know how she gets on with them.

I'm hopefully getting some neutral/clear ones that will only have to be applied to one foot! Maybe if she has them on for a few months, she'll realise nothing is happening and will deprogramme herself!

Marie, your cat had her collar on for five months? Poor thing.My old girl's going mad at just under a fortnight. Hope both you and Linda figure something out to help with Maisy and Stitch.

We have the same problem as Linda. We are desperate for something else to use to stop Maisy scratching. She has had the plastic collar on for 5 months! Does anyone know of anything else that can do the same job as the collar but kinder. We now have an appointment at Langford Vet School to see a specialist for 21 Feb to try and get to the problem of her scratching as the allergy food is not working.

Fingers crosed this works Jack - if not, you could try getting one of the collars that Pete has used, it is more of a material one than the hard plastic.
Linda - I would defo ask your vet what they think, but I do think it would be worth trying.

I think you should definately speak to your vet first.

I have nevr felt one of these but if someone itches so bad that they will just scratch till they bleed................I have skin problem so know.........then you can scratch yourself or rub the area so much no matter what protection and still make it bleed.

Maybe have a word with your vet to get his/her opinion on whether they would help? It's certainly the kind of use for which I think these are useful.

They might work, Linda. That's the theory I'm going on. My poor old girl can't walk round with the "cone of doom" on for the next however many weeks it takes for her ear to completely heal, same goes for your Stitch, I guess.

IMHO, if you think that medically your cat needs this, even despite clipping claws, which let's all be honest, are great but they can still nick you if the cat sees fit, then these are a viable alternative.

Linda I would go for it, getting meds can't be nice for stitch and if getting these stops her scratching her face until its fixed I think its perfectly acceptable...not pretty, but for her best interests.

Don't know about suppliers but I imagine they'll be cheaper on the internet than from your vet. You could try froogling for them!

I know, I don't agree with them as a rule either! Unfortunately, it looks as though one of my mob is a self harmer! She had major surgery on her ear before Christmas, and that should've been that. I was told NOT to put a protective collar on as it might rub on the ear that was healing. Well, something did! My cats paw as she obsessively cleaned it and scratched it. So, she had to go in again this month to remove part of her ear as it had gone necrotic.

Getting to the point, it seems she is utterly incapable of leaving her ear alone, so I think that for the few months after the op to let it heal fully I'm possibly getting some soft claws.(Boo hiss!)

Does anyone know of a cheap supplier?
