I have an all white cat so I understand all to well your fear of melanoma. I have to watch my girls ears in particular and my vet checks her over when she goes in for her booster. She is supposed to wear sunscreen in the summer but she knows all to well what it is and detests it so often gets away before we can get her. Luckily she seems to know herself to stay in shady spots on hot days.

I don't know but suspect that unlike as humans a melanoma can just start up anywhere on the skin as I know in particular we have been told to look out for scaly, crusty skin developing on Bronte's ears.

Sorry she has a granuloma but glad that's all it is.

Thank you all.

It was really worrying me as Maddy is a bi colour ragdoll which means she has a pink nose and white fur on some of her face and I know cats with these traits are at a higher risk of melanoma.

Mrs R I am impressed. What are the differences if any (in brief lol).

Is it the case that in humans, Melanoma/sarcomas arise mostly from birth marks/moles but in cats its a new growth/neoplasia ?

Bit of personal trivia for ya - I did my dissertation at university on comparing malignant feline skin cancers to human ones.   I loved doiing it, very interesting - got the highest marks too for it from my year  :)

Sadly, malignant melanoma is a malignant skin cancer so I am so relieved its a benign growth.

Maddy has a granuloma

My Bi coloured Tabby ragdoll Maddy has had a sore on her upper lip that wasn't healing.

Was getting worried as this can be a sign of malignant melanomas.

Thankfully after a trip to the vets today, found out it was a granuloma.

Caused by eosinophils (white blood cells) and is a benign growth.

Treatment is an injection of an anti inflammatory medicine.

Feeling very relieved, as is Maddy to be home again.

 :)
