grooming for long haired cats

I use an undercoat rake on the Team's thick wooly undercoat to ensure they are tangle free.

I nuse a comb on Beavios and Gizzy - a slicker only really touches the surface.

Misty's never had a bath iether, and I dont even want to try

I've never bathed her, I don't know how she would react, I will work on getting this one nasty one out and then just use the comb

I use metal combs like this - very similar to the one Candice uses (I agree, slickers and zoom groom won't get down to the undercoat) :



and this matt breaker is good for tangles and for combing out the undercoat:



but really the best way to keep the coat matt free is to bath and blow dry (after knotty/tangled bits are removed first of course!) every couple of months or so. The coat is much easier to look after and stays knot free (ish!) in between times.

I think I put a post on here after Misty started His Fortekor cause His coat was starting to get knots in it 
a few people did reply saying that Fortekor did affect the coat, anyway Misty has now took a BIG dislike to
the Brush & comb I was using  and I now have better luck when he is sitting on me and I just tease out the
matted lumps (which seem to consist of mainly dead hair??)

but I'm still not allowed to touch his tummy

Definitely use a comb - I personally find the other products a waste of time with cats that have a dense undercoat.

I have about 4 of these dotted around the house and out of all the combs I have bought over the years they are the only ones I use now

I know that there are a few of you with long hairs, Gillian, Amy, Candice etc - what am I doing wrong with Star??

on the surface her fur is lovely but when i use a comb I keep finding mats deep down in the fur next to the skin - I use a zoom groom and slicker and a couple of times per a week a comb - should I ditch everything and just comb every day, I'm guessing the slicker isn't getting down far enough to do anything - also what could be causing the knots?  I came across a biggy last night unexpectedly and she bit me!  I don't blame her but I'd like to avoid it in the future if possible!!
