That is awful Mark but i think cases like that must be few and far between surely.
I have heard some horrid stories las i have worked with animals all my life.
I like to think that these people will get thier comeuppence by god eventually.

i would love to rescue more but i could not afford it

If you volunteer for a rescue, it needn't cost anything. I do short car runs with my own petrol but some people even claim that back. If you do fostering, all food etc is supplied and vet bills paid by the charity. Even volunteering as an overflow fosterer is great as there are times when we have to leave cats at the vet as all the fosterers are full - sometimes even having to pay catteries out of tight funds that could be used for vet bills etc.

As for people who leave cats behind not being all there - I agree with you but it is a lot more common than people think. A lot of them don't even give them a small chance of surviving. I have heard of rabbits left in hutches to starve etc  >:( I was looking at Ron's site (Lost cats Brighton) last night and a while ago, some "people" had sold their house and moved away leaving 4 cats in the house with no cat flap  >:( - It was lucky that the people buying the house moved in quickly as the cats were saved but could just have easily starved to death if the new people didn't move in when they did. There are a lot of sick, heartless scum out there.

DO NOT BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER ANIMALS DIE

It is very upsetting, i would love to rescue more but i could not afford it an the cats would end up suffering.
Its infuriating that people leave animals behind but I always think that we have to feel sorry for them in a way as they can't be all there.
You only have to watch some of the programmes on Tv to see that not all people with animals are responsible and sometimes do not know how to look after them through ignorance rather than being cruel.

Funnily enough, I went to the wrong place first when I went to Rhodes Minnis open day on Sunday - I ended up in Parkside dog sanctuary and it really got to me as so many of the dogs were desperate for attention whereas most cats just sleep in the pens  :evillaugh:

I don't know how you cope with the barking - it would drive me insane

I agree MArk, I went to a cat and dog rescue recently, and it was the dogs that upset me more than the cats, the cats seemed a lot more content!!
Please spay your cat

if it didn't affect us we wouldn't be human, at least by being a member you can see what rescues are doing and support them as you can

Totally understand hun  it gets to me more times than others and I have to sit and sob my heart out at time, I just think I have to stay strong though for the animals and pick myself up again but every so often it is like I have to mourn.

I know what you mean - I felt really sad locking Flower into her pen after taking pictures yesterday but the alternatives are far worse.

I'm at Head Office so only have to contend with office dogs fortunately  :evillaugh:

I feel slightly detatched from the dog side of things I think it enables me to do my job better I could never work in cat rescue it would break my heart. When I go to our centres I never want to take the dogs home but when I've been to cat rescues I want to take them all.

I think, too, when we have cats of our own that we love so much it is hard to think of others who are neglected and unloved.

I do rescue and some days it really gets to me and like Mark said, it's because you feel so helpless but we can only do our bit, nothing more and nothing less and although heartbreaking, most of the ones in rescues are the lucky ones, they've been given a second chance and although it's horrible when they're stuck in cages in most cases, most do find a loving home and have a long and happy future

I think you're falling into the trap of not seeing the woods for the trees. Don't get too close to those stories. There's nothing you can do to prevent them and you can drive yourself mad by dwelling on them. I'm not being harsh, just practical.

I find it helps to focus on what you can practically do to help support the work of folks who pick up the pieces.  ;)

It's beyond most people's understanding how people can move home and leave their animals behind without a second thought.  >:(

This is what had happened to Ronnie until one of the neighbours took him to the local cat rescue where I spent some time with him and decided to adopt him.  :)

He is such an amiable cat and it is hard to comprehend why he was left behind. I hope whoever they are never have the chance to 'own' any animal ever again.  >:(

I think it just makes us all feel so helpless.

In one of the "Ladies' detective agency" books, one of the characters says how many terrible things happen in the world. The main character says that if we thought about them all the time, all we would do is cry all day. The best any of us can do is our own "small acts of kindness" which is more productive.

This isn't verbatim except the "Small acts of kindness"

Sharon took a call today from a vet in Canterbury. A cat had been taken into them by some people that said the cat was being kicked around in the barracks so they rescued it and took it to the vet. The vet has done their bit, checked the cat over, flead & wormed, We are full but the vet said they don't mind keeping it for a few days and hopefully we can find a space - I guess all that is better than despairing which doesn't help any of us

I always check the cats available for rehoming on catchat in my area, (I know hubby will never let me have another) but lately when I've looked I've found it really upsetting, to the point where I am in tears.

How can people just move and leave the cat behind for example, it breaks my heart!
