Those piccies are  :censored:.  Babies are so hard to photograph, they are just "blobs".  Will try with the proper camera tonight.   :sorry:

Thanks everyone.  I have come to the conclusion that mum (now called Matilda, one of Ela's choices) must have sensed there was something wrong with the little one, because she has been really good with the other three.  She only leaves them for a short time to eat or use the litter tray and if she does lay awkwardly and a baby squeaks she does move; so fingers crossed everything will be okay.

Some piccies for you to have a look at the new additions.

This one not too good, as they were taken on my mobile.  As you can seem, the intensive care unit gets used even when it doesn't need to be, but mum thinks it is a nice nest.

Matilda having a well earned feed, she eats for England.

Lesley, I'm realy sorry to hear this hun   Don't blame yourself as it most definately wasn't your fault, I went through the same thing with Pop's (herbies) litter and he was the only one to survive after mum killed the rest.

There can be a number of reasons why this happens, including there being something wrong with the kitten, or that mum is very young herself and just doesn't have a clue / no maternal instincts.   You also have to bear in mind as well that she has been through a lot of stress in the intial stages with the kittens and perhaps she felt threatened that something or someone wanted her babies.  Usually though if that is the case they move the rest and leave the weakest or dead kitten behind.

Sometimes mum is just clueless... I went through exactly the same as I said with Herbies litter and hummed and hawed about removing kittens from mum and in the end mum killed 2 of the litter and we took herbie away from her and he is now thriving in his new home.   Sadly, sometimes this is the way that nature turns out.  Keep and eye on mum with the rest of the kittens and if she is continuing to lie on them and not move then it may be an idea to take them from mum.  Even if they don't all survive then at least you know you have tried hun

I agree, where possible kittens should remain with mum.  I had this problem with Abigail's last baby, she kept leaving him on his own constantly, she must have sensed he wasn't right and sadly he didn't survive even when I intervened.  Don't beat yourself up for not handrearing, as this still could have happened.  Fingers crossed for all the other little ones

Hi Lesley, i am sorry about the little one, but this happened to me when i had my persian cat Persia many years ago, she had 4 kittens and i found her sitting on them and i kept moving her but she would go back and it was the first time i experianced this so i called this lady which was very experianced and she told me to leave her cos she sense there is some thing wrong with her kittens  :( Well i just couldnt  accept it at that time so i managed to save two and handreared them, on few occasion when i came home from work i found the kittens outside and my neighbour told me she saw Persia carry them out and leave them in the bushes, i was so surprised , any how the two kittens never made it to age of one, they were really sick all the time i had them and had to be PTS, and i realized i went against nature, i think some times the cats know some thing that we dont and i agree with Desley  if you had handreared it might have still happened, i am sure she sensed her baby is not well. :(

RIP little kitten.

i am so sorry to hear this Lesley, but she may have sensed something wrong with that baby, so if you had handreared, it might have still happened. I Think putting them with mum was the best thing to do though, it is better for the kitts to have mum's milk and feeding than ours. Fingers crossed for the rest of them. RIP little one.

Well. some sad news today.  Unfortunately, found mum had squashed and suffocated one of the kittens this morning.  I feel gutted.  If I had handreared them this would not have happened.  Don't know whether to leave the other kittens with mum or take them away.

I feel the baby must have cried, so why didn't she move.  She seems comfortable with the others and I've moved her to a bigger next.  She had chosen my small incubator as her nest so have moved her to the larger one, not switched on and with the door open.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :thanks:

I am pleased to announce that when I just went up to feed babies, mum heard them crying and jumped straight into incubator with them and is now cuddled up and feeding them herself.

I will let her settle and look in on them in about an hour but if they seem okay I will go to bed, yippeee.

I'm just glad it confirms that she is the mum, I was getting worried for a while there.  I think she just needed to settle a bit, she has been letting me stroke her and even rolled over for a belly rub.  Her belly did not feel particularly full of milk but hopefully now they are suckling the milk will start flowing better.

Sorry Dawn probably not what you wanted to hear after Socks' episode tonight - hopefully it is just temporary for her. :Luv2:

Just after Dawn found alternative accommodation for the kittens from Derby (about 10 minutes after) got a call from a chap who had found four kittens in his garden and though he had seen mum.

Went round and kittens were just on the ground under a bush.  The guy stated that he only found them because they were crying and was worried as they get foxes in the garden even during the day time.

Was going to get the incubator out of the car as they really wanted me to take babies to safety, when we saw what we thought was mother at the gront garden.  After much toing and froing and a lot of help from very nice neighbours managed to catch "mum" and therefore remove the whole family.

Mum looks very young, is petrified, does not seem to have much milk and shows no interest in kittens at all.  All she wants to do is eat, I have never seen a cat eat so much and so fast, she must be starving.  Although not large her nipples look like they have been suckled but the babies are probably only 24 hours old.

I think she is just terrified of the whole giving birth experience, and just bewildered by it all.

I have her safely ensconced in the study (posh name for the box room) and the kittens are also in there in the incubator.  I don't really want to leave her with them just in a bed in case she tries to harm them and just in case we have made a terrible mistake and it's not mum :-[  So alot of night feeding for me though they are already taking their milk well.  When I last fed them mum looked but even though I put the babies right near her she did not seek them out, but did not hiss at them either.

Hopefully if she calms down she may accept them back.
