Victoria and Fred absolutely love the Tesco Premium: it's very gooey and has lots of gravy. They purr when they eat it. Not sure that Sam and Polly would eat it. I'm still feeding them separately.

Linda, you  might want to try the pate style pouches, or mush his chunks up so he has to have some meat with the gravy. Gravy on it's own doesn't have the right kind of nutrients, and gravy from fresh meat isn't as thick as pouched gravy.

What annoys me about the "single-serve" pouches is the same thing with those laundry detergent sachets/tablets affairs: you're restricted to serve-size which is probably more than a lot of individual cats want or need in a serving, so you buy more.  I know my little boy likes his pouches and begs for them but then the little blighter only licks the jelly/gravy off them and won't eat the chunks.  I'm considering weaning him off them altogether which is a shame because I can't make him gravy as I'm a veggie so wouldn't have any meat in the house to make it from.  But then I'm a kitten-slave so I'm actually thinking about buying fresh meat so he can have his darned gravy, but the real thing.  Oh, what to do?

i agree Susanne, I Went to Sainsbury's for the first time in over a year yesterday, and in their 'premium' selection, there was some HiLife, Sheba and something else, only one of which I would class as premium. I wouldn't buy tins for myself, but we do at the rescue, cos pouches go nowhere when we have a lot of cats in. Pouches can also be frustrating when tehy come in multipacks, it is the reason I haven't got Whiskas Oh So senior, cos the only flavour Rosie likes hasn't been made in teh senior variety - and it is chicken, so not an unusual flavour!!

I tried to put my pair on tins as the tins when they were on offer but they are too clever and would only ever eat the "first half" of the tins. No matter what I did to keep it fresh, putting it in fridge, sealing the rest in a tupperware box they just refused to eat it. It's wasn't even a different brand just good old felix in gravy.

I had no idea 'premiumisation' was a word!  ;D  Although I suspect their definition of a premium cat food isn't the same as mine.  Putting the word 'premium' or similar in the name doesn't make it a premium cat food to me. 

Interesting report.

I do agree that it's difficult to buy tins now, and the fact that such a high proportion of cat food available in supermarkets is single serve pouches is  bound to influence what people buy.  Single serve cat food is bound to be selling well - it takes up about 3/4 of the shelving, if not more.

Interesting - I have found that individual tins are a lot harder to get hold of these days - I wanted just a few random tins at some point this year (can't remember when or why, but was probably trying to find something a fussy cat would eat), and there wasn't nearly the choice there was when I remember doing it 4 years ago for Snowy, and the Range don't sell tins full stop.

Theres a "whiskas" fishermans box that mine love,mind you mine will eat everything exept for Rameses,he just wont tough felix beef pouch or tin :shify:

I was surprised to see Tesco own wet food in the top ten - although I am sure it is at least as good as the top 2 brands.

That is really interesting, Christine, because it shows people do wish to feed their pets a better diet. Unfortunately, most will buy their pets weekly shop in with their own, which means they are restricted to what's on the shelf in Tescos and Sainsburys.

If only the supermarkets had the foresight to stock JWB and Natures Menu, etc., and give them the same prominence on the shelf as Whiskas and Felix.  :tired:
