Hi, Mr Evans

It's always a hard one to advice on and very much depends on the cat. Very often, you don't see a true cat's personality until it's on its own and doesn't have to share it's humans or home. Then again, sometimes you get a communal cat who pines for company and becomes morbid when it looses a pal. (Siamese do this a lot!) You should also be aware that there isn't a sudden change between the end of kittenhood and the start of adulthood. A cat's personality does change naturally around 2-3 years old when they stop being teenagers and they 'grow up', become less active and generally a little more sensible. Maybe the change you noticed in Millie was for just this reason and by chance it coincided with you loosing her companion?

At the end of the day, you pays your money and you takes you choice. So long as new introductions are made cautiously and grand rules adhired to, few people have problems for too long.

kittens are lovley but id go for inbetween ages 6months to a year. in 6 months i ended up with five kittens from al over when i said i wanted a cat for my new house ( all my old cats had passed on) every one that new of a kitten in need, turned up. all fun. my leather bed is shreeded so are my arms and legs, scared for life now. it was cayos i also had two pups and four old dogs. i was lucky if you call it that i had one child but cant have any more and the cats are so much cheaper and dont scream i hate you after 12 years of love.

Millie is 5 and she is full of energy still, she got me a lovely present the other day - poor birdie 

Not as much energy as a kitten 

You could always apply to your local rescue as a fosterer so you could experience kittens but without commiting to keeping.
You need a spare room and time to socialise

But she has been good so far this year with rats, she was bringing us rats in every week last year - ALIVE  Letting them go and then getting bored and leaving them to me to kill 

I am soooo soooooo tempted - Mrs Evans would love one but the last thing I want is Millie to have her nose pushed out of joint

also, and this is a very broad generalisation  - male cats (neutered) are generally speaking less aggro than female cats, so a boy is a good choice, if you only go for one. But I agree with the others - a kitten is really in your face. Smidgen is the first kitten I have had in years as most of mine tend to adult rescues. I had completely forgotten just how energetic kittens are - they NEVER stop!!! I was exhausted from lack of sleep, let alone keeping the house in one piece!!  And at 12 months, he still has moments of complete chaos!

A pair of young adults cats may be less offensive to her, kittens have no manners  in more ways than one

And yes Kirst it hasnt been the best month but we just laugh and carry on with it - pointless getting upset

We were worried about Beavis reaction to two new faces , but apart from some light hissing he is taking it in his stride ATM and its only6 been a few days!

Sorry to hear about you and Mrs E's children situation - its not been a good month for you two has it!

The same thing happen to me (not the having chidren thing) - We lost Beau to FIP - Thai became VERY affectionate. As I missed Beau so much - Zak & Zubin arrived 2 Bengal  Brothers. They were 15 weeks old and kept each other company while Thai went about her business. She still is VERY affectionate, She sleeps in bed - not ON - IN  and emands that you brush her and rub her tum.

We started out with two cats lost one and now have 3 - Sadley Zak was killed in an RTA and so Zebedee arrived (half brother to Zubin) -

Millie will still be affectionate - but the kitten will need a play mate to grow up with - Thai was just 2 when Zak & Zu arrived.
She will probably be scared of them at first and will wonder what they are.

Oh I know its not the end of the world, worse things happen everyday to others.

Another 2 cats !!!! I dont know if I could cope with that !!!! I love cats but to have 3 of them might wreck the joint !!!

Millie is really happy at the moment and the last thing I would want to do is upset her.

you'd probably need to do like kirst has done and get two, they can bother each other then!

If her behaviour changed for the better when she became an only cat then that would suggest that is her at her happiest. 

Kittens often drive older cats nuts, they live a different schedule to adults who like to snooze alot and follow the sun.

I used to have 2 cats Bro and Sis, George and Millie

George sadly got knocked down after a house move which devestated us especially my wife.

Now Millie never used to be too close to us as George dominated the house but after he passed on Millie became very close and still is (apart from when she claws the leather sofa).

Now my wife and I have been trying for children and have just found out the chances are not too good so I am thinking of getting her a Kitten.

Millie is 5 years old now and George was knocked down 3 years ago.

Will getting another male (TOM) kitten make Millie distant again ???

I so dont want to upset her but would love another Kitten - any tips would be great.

If it upsets her then it is not an option as she is loved too much by us.
