If you want 100% assurance, you could always phone or email the manufacturer.

One of the problems with cats is there are so many normally harmless things that their liver enzmes are unable to process like other species so they get a buld up of toxins. I'm sure if it isn't stated on ingredients, it's fine but you may want 100% assurance. You could tell them their product is being recommended as cat litter but you want to check that theirs is listed as safe on cat forums.

Now Im worrying - should I stop using the chick crumb?  I would never do anything to risk my furbabies health !!

Just make sure you have non-medicated crumb - with no added coccidistat, so preferably organic.

think clumping clay was the best  :-:

Yep, Everclean was the best one (that we can get in the UK) on Dr Addie's site for killling fcov. I really liked Everclean, but it is expensive, unless you can get it at cat shows where they do some really good deals.

The chicks are sexed within 24 hrs so i doubt they eat much of it!

I dont think disinfectant would go in food

She probably heard it was medicated and thought that meant disinfectant rather than antibiotics - although not personally as she isn't stupid . She was explaining stuff about FIP, titres etc this morning that hurt my head

I thought about Gwynnie's legs when I read it but left it to you to see Gillian

I suppose if chicks are eating it - and hadn't occured to me before but they probably use the millions of male chicks that are minced up in cat food.

I know you can find conflicting things on the web but this mentions poisoning caused by it. I suppose it would have to be ingested in large quantities? - unless it is another thing that cats can't process?

I made the mistake of buying a cheaper brand which the pet shop told me didnt have any antibiotic, hormone or nasties in. I believed them and used it for several months and then Gwynnie got ill and if you remember, lost the use of her back legs (one of the symptoms listed in that link you posted) - I went round checking everything, and the label on my chick crumb sack listed something called Monensin, which is a coccidistat closely related to salinomycin. I also found a link about paralysis, but that was in pigs, I hadnt seen anything about it being in cat food.

I found a site that sais they normally add coccidiostats unless you ask for it otherwise. I doubt if organic would contain it.

http://medical.merriam-webster.com/medical/coccidiostat

Has anybody got a sack handy? - I havent been using it for a while, but the bags I used to get had ingredients listed on a label attached to the bag, you should be able to see exactly whats in it.

Nor me

I googled - chick crumb disinfectant

5th place was Gillian's page  :evillaugh: - I like her idea of using a cooking spoon to pick up the poo to stop the litter that has po touching it going back into the tray.

LOL! only 5th place?

I think it depends on the brand you buy Mark. I must admit I've never heard of disinfectant being added either, but I wouldnt think that the organic brands would, don't know?

I was talking to Brigid who runs Siamese rescue this morning and we were talking about litter (what else?  :evillaugh: ) I asked if she heard about chick crumb. She said she had but wouldn't use it as she heard some of them had disinfectant added to them. I said I had heard some have hormones in but she said it was definitely disinfectant so wouldn't use it.
