Have been meaning to update on Mo's situation for a while but as me wireless connections gone down and i've only just managed to prise OH off the pooter i'd thought i'd take the opportunity!

Mo is now SPAYED, (apparently local vet did it FOC- nice of him, but I think woman could have afforded it her pub is not doing at all badly).

Got to meet little lady on Sunday....she is a VERY dainty tortie and white (wish i'd taken a piccie) so I am very glad that there will be no more kittens for this little angel....she looks in good health (but could do with a little more quality grub IMO) and bright eyed so apart from a sideways eye on her whenever I visit I'm happy to say case closed on this one!

BTW I have no idea who got the kittens...though the staff member who should NEVER get a cat is not one of them....

Update... my OH had a long talk with the landlady this evening.. she is still contemplating keeping Mo as in her words 'she is a good mouser'

hope she realises this means that she still needs to be fed...but still has a sign over form just in case. Apparently Mo is out in the bar again UNSPAYED!

She IS reading the literature that I sent to her and is promising to give copies out to the kittens new owners.....not holding breath on that one.
May have to go and get in her face and say sign her over before I spay you!

I didn't want to start a new thread, but I was reading the local classifieds in the paper today and there are kittens for sale for £30. Born on 18th April. The advert says ready to go now .. by my workings out it makes them exactly 7 weeks old today

Far too young!

Unfortunately my parents aren't back until late tonight but apparently my dad has become quite friendly with the staff round there so he said he would pop round for the same reason. For a man who has spent most of his life in the engine rooms of ships, he's surprisingly soppy when it comes to animal welfare!

Well apparently two of the staff have volunteered with the RSPCA, but this is being taken with a bucket of salt

. At least the member of staff I was most concerned with isn't there ATM. She was going to be the foster for Trixie but neglected to tell us that she was going on holiday for a month! What would have happened to Trixie then may I ask??

I'd most definalety agree that a pub is no place for a kitten to grow up. My OH is very familiar with this situation as his mum is a pub landlady herself. She has a cat called Suki but this little lady never goes down into the pub. Kittens will get under feet at the best, bad enough when you're sober.............and the fact that they're shut away doesn't bode well for their socialisation skills. I put a leaflet on poisons into the stuff I gave her adding alcohol to the list. i don't know about staff living in though, but if OH mums pub is anything to go by, then it's a certainty that at least on of the kitten mums will be....

my friend runs a pub and usually the people end up living in because they can't afford rent which is what rings alarm bells with me

Nothing against people that work in bars at all, I used to. I just know a lot of the staff that did work there before I left and they didn't seem to be responsible types. May have changed staff since september though.

I'm going to be visiting my parents tomorrow. Its very tempting to pop in for a 'I saw the article in the newspaper and thought I'd come over' visit and see what she says. She's known me since I was 12 but doesn't know I'm a cat obsessive or any of that!

Well one of the articles i left with them is a delightful piece called 'the cost of raising a kitten' if I remember rightly the overall cost came to £17,000 over a 16 year life.

Well we shall see, anyone up for a follow up visit in a couple of days?

Now why do I get the impression that the barstaff have seen the itsy bitsy kittens and thought - how cute, I'll have one of those fluffy babies.

I do hope they know what they are getting themselves into and aren't just going to keep them until they are grown up. Also that they are going to be responsible and spay/neuter them when the time comes. Somehow I doubt all of them will be good kitten parents, but maybe I'm just being too negative about it.

Well James has just reported back.....Apparently the family have been to a vets and new homes have been found for the kittens (all barstaff)

She is 'deciding' whether or not to keep the mum, all I say is she'd better be feeding her right and keeping her secure cos by the sound of it she'll go into heat anyday....

I know the landlady too, the pub is at the end of my parents road. I saw the article in the paper yesterday and wondered if anyone here had seen it. The landlady used to be my guide leader when I was really young, she lives behind my parents (or used to) and I used to see her around the pub. She has a youngish daughter so I hope she doesn't let her have one of the kittens, I don't think she'd be a very good kitten mum!

I say we kitten-nap them and mum!

OH is now going tomorrow armed with a barage of leaflets for the woman, his friend who knows the woman better is hopefully coming and he's a complete cat lover with local CP links.....fingers crossed we can either shock her into action or get her to sign the little family over, that way Mo gets neutered and the little pusses get homes with quality instead of into the hands of 'Portsmouth chavs'!

Yes the cat is the one mentioned to me before.....
My OH is going to go in armed with leaflets tomorrow as he's aware of the problems with pubs and kittens... has anyone got any documents relating to how to find good homes for the kittens and avoiding backstreet breeders as well as info on post-natal cat and kitten care for him to take in with him?

OMG....I know that pub and my OH is friends with the landlady but this is the first i've heard of this

She spoke to my OH regarding an injured cat last week......AND she knows I work with cat rescue....why the **** did'nt she call me? She told my OH that she did'nt want the responsibilty of keeping a cat and now I hear this-i'm spitting bricks!

From ‘The News’, Thursday 29 May:

‘Cute kittens have made an old Second World War bomb their home at a Southsea pub. A stray tabby became a regular at the Barley Mow pub in Castle Road several weeks ago – and landlady Judi Burr, who has named the cat Mo, noticed she was a little podgy around the waist. Then when Mo gave birth to her litter, she chose the bomb, which had been made safe and was put on the bar, as the perfect place to raise her kittens. “She disappeared for a few days,” Judi said. “Then just the other day she carried in all these kittens, two ginger toms and a tabby, and put them in the old World War two bomb, which had landed in the cellar but we now have in the bar. They lived in there for a bit and are now happily curled up in a box beside it.”’

I just wondered if we had a local member who could pop in for a drink and have a little chat about neutering and spaying?

PS Mum looks like a tortie to me from the picture, as does the ‘tabby’ kitten.
