Hi Rachel.
 Your parents are being quite good already half their garden wow!! Can you squeeze in a cat run? I think I would try that as you could take it with you if and when you do move.

Roz advised me NOT to grow anything up it as it stabilises it and makes it easy for the cat to get out!

I would of thought that also, but someone on here has roses on it!  Not sure if that is Roz's design though?

I have Roz's catproofing which is black but really is not intrusive at all, in fact some mornings I have to double check to see if it is still there.  Roz advised me NOT to grow anything up it as it stabilises it and makes it easy for the cat to get out!

Not sure if you would get clear catproofing as it is metal!

ps...You can conceal the catproofing with climbing plants etc!

thank you very much for your replys, i have been considering fitting a petport backwards and just removing jakes microchip detaials from it when i want to go out for the day, not sure if this would work though

is there a company that installs clear cat proofing insted of the usual black? i am gona have to keep working on them but they have already given me half their garden for the rest of the animals and the other half is ment to be kept nice for them!

had considered the magnetic cat flap thing and colleres for the girls....but mia wont wear one, she completly freaks out and gets rearly stressed every time i have tried

guess i will have to bring out the tears on the parents!!

I really feel for you in this situation as you are limited by your parents, it being their house and all.

There's not much else I can add that the others before me haven't already but can understand how stressful it must be for you too.

Short of reasoning with your parents I'm not sure there is much more you can do other than what has already been mentioned until you manage to find a place of your own.   good luck

That's the problem's I was forseeing with the chip/magnet flaps......I have a magnet flap which just opens to anything! 

My Baz dislikes opening the flap himself, he purposely waits for another cat to go through so he can follow!

You could try one of the cat flaps where the cat has to wear a magnet and just put a magnet on the two that you want to go out.  The only thing is that I think you would have to fit the catflap back to front, as normally the bit with the magnet goes on the outside so only your cat can get in, if you know what I mean.  The only trouble I can see with this, as with the microchip cat flap, is if one cats goes out immediately behind the other I cannot see it would stop the second cat that fast.

I thought a feature of the petporte flaps is that they would read individual microchips so you could control who came in and out. Though I would imagine they will never be good enough to stop one cat following on the tail of another.
The only other thing to consider would be a run for the garden - at this would be easy enough to dismantle and take with you if you move. mind you having said that, the same can probably be said for the cat proofing of the garden. I'm sure others on here can give you an idea of how much this would cost.
I am almost at that stage with Titch, he is not allowed out yet as he is waiting for the chop but he's a bit scatty still at 6 months old. I know he would love to get out and is for ever barging at doors. However, one of my other younger cats was killed last year at 1 year old. Sadly the first 18 months or so is quite a risk for young cats. Titch may find himself grounded for a couple of years
Its a hard decision to make for them as of course you always want to keep them safe.

The 13 yr old is okay as know's the area well and has had no probs so far......The other's are definitely getting a call from the road....prob with you living in a quiet area it will seem so more appealing to them.....

Apart from the obvious and easiest solution (keep him in) the only other suggestion I could offer is to have another (more serious) word with your parents.....let them know how ill it is making you feel (its not fair they dont see the cats in the same light as you but some people are just like that!)

Maybe show them some pics of catproofed gardens....some people imagine them to be hideous, prison looking type set up's but they are not! 

There is a lady on here whose specialty is "catproofing" It may seem expensive but I think not in the long run....much cheaper than what a vet would charge if your babes accidently got on the road and were injured!!!

Cant really offer any other advice hun....just hope you can manage to air your concern's to your parents and be taken more seriously this time! Good luck....

Hello, my names rachel, i currently have 3 cats and was looking for some advice before i lose my sanity!
basicly... we have Lucy a 13 yr old female we have had her since a kitten no problems atall
last september i took on two surviving kittens that my friend had handreared since they were 4 days old (found under garden shead)
Jacob and Mia are now 10 months old, neuted vacinated, microchiped ect.

We live in a fairly quite area, however there is a footpath at the end of our road that leads down to the main road, unfortunatly lucys brother got ran over there when he was six. for the cats to get down there they have to go through three sets of gardens if that makes sence.

Lucy is allowed free acess to the outside whenever she likes as she is 13 and has been fine so far
Jake and Mia are allowed out during the day but they are called in for night about 7 and are usally in by 8-8.30 at the latest

the problem starts when everyone is out for the day, (jake and mia are my cats but i like with my parents and sister)
a few months ago jake didnt come in at night we went out looking for him and in the morning we found him stuck in a (very small) tree at the corner of this footpath

last saturday everyone was out from 10.30 - 8, when i got home from work i called them in, lucy and mia were in no problem but jake wasnt.
eventually at 10pm...i went looking for him, i found him in the frount garden of the house at the bottom of the footpath....less than 5 meters from the main road, he was fine but was a bit disorientated and very pleased to see me.

hence my problem, i dont trust jake not to wander to far and get him self into trouble i was looking at fitting one of those pet porte cat flaps so that i can set it to keep jake in when we are out for the day and let the others out, but it dosent work like that, are there any catflaps that do?

i have considered cat proofing the garden but my parents wont let me....all i get is "hes just a cat". there is no way he could become an indoor cat as he would end up escaping and his general behaviour is a nigthmare anyway and i feal that confining hime indoors will make it worse.

has anyone else had this sort of problem, did your cat grow out of the wandering, will he learn from his mistates and not go back down to the main road?

i dont know what else to do....idealy i would like to move out and cat proof my own garden, but thats not looking likley for atleast 2-3 years
at the minute its rather controling my life, i dont want to go out for to long as i am worried he will go wandering and holidays are a nightmare,
we have never used catteries and i dont rearly want to.

sorry for the long ramble and bad spelling, but has anyone got any ideas?
