This is from felinecrf.org but it doesn't say if it's dangerous or how to stop it, just that if the anaemia's controlled it may stop by itself (??)

"Eating Litter/Licking Concrete
This is known as pica. Many vets are not aware that this can be a symptom of anaemia, but it is surprisingly common, so if a CRF cat suddenly starts eating litter, PCV or HCT levels (anaemia measurement)  should always be tested. Thomas was already being treated for anaemia when he began to eat his litter. Sure enough, when we tested him, his anaemia had worsened, so we increased his medication and as soon as his anaemia improved his litter eating stopped".

How is JJ's anaemia and tum? The liquid iron stuff can help a lot, but can cause bloating, stomach pain and constipation.
How's JJ?

Well at present dare I say it she is eating really well. She hasn't had her blood taken for a while, not sure if it was done when she had her teeth out. She is not constantly eating the litter and when she does I don't think it is much. But that is very interesting, if it continues I shall certainly mention it to my vet.

Thanks for the name of the thing, I knew it began with a P but thought it was a longer word. I would have another chat with the vet about it, especially if she is still doing it. Tesco cheap litter tends to be quite gravelly and might not be a good one for her to eat.

It was only Tuesday of this week I spoke of it to my vet, so she is aware of it. She not done it as yet today was think of using shredded paper if I see her doing it too much.

I had a cat 12 years ago- my darling Oscar and he did this when he was in the stages of kidney failure , but i didn''t know why at the time , he also started losing his sight and they didn''t have Fortecor tablets then . I had to make the hard decision then as he just got worse .
Hope its nothing like that .

I can't get mine to use it, but there's always that long lasting plastic, white type litter which I don't think would be edible, even if she tried(??). Very weird what they do sometimes  hope it stops!
Possibly more expensive than Felix etc, but Hills senior little cans are about £9 for 24 (85g) on vet uk and come in chicken and turkey & many cats seem to find them ok.
Thanks about the food but whilst she is eating i don't think I try any more at present. Probably if she was just diagnosed with kidney Dieseas may have tried it but at this stage I think I better stay safe and keep her on what she is eating. :thanks:

How much litter would you say J has eaten? If only a very small amount then all should be okay....not wanting to worry you hun but it is the clumping litter....so if say only a couple of bits then Im sure that would be fine!  ;)

My cat done this also.....Ive heard its supposed to soak up the toxins in their body....but that is one of many theories!

From what I've seen when I have caught her it has been only a couple of bits. She did it today, I felt mean but I flick her with a little water and said no she did stop then. Meanie mum :-[

There is a medical reason for cats eating litter, and I can't think of the name of it off the top of my head, but it is cos they are lacking something. I am glad you have found somethign else she will eat, as A/D shouldnt be fed long term. The small cans of HiLife are complete and a good meat content, so they are quite good - senior food is the best for CRF, have you tried her on that? My CRF cat has eaten Whiskas for years, but prefers Felix Senior foods!!

Hi just look up on Google....... which I shouldn't have done., more to worry about!!!  It's called Pica, they say could be link to illness so more then likely the Kidney Disease but what worried me they spoke of it could cause a blockage if it's the clay type. Look on the package but can't see what in it, as I've said before she doesn't do it that often so I pray she doesn't get that problem. Also says to let your vet know, well have told  her yesterday.

Felix senior is on offer in Sainsburys at the moment - 2 boxes for £5  ;D - The good thing is they have 2 kinds of senior variety packs so 8 flavours in all - offer is on until 27th I think.
Thanks for that Mark, thats a good price haven't got a Sainsbury local to me though. But for all those who do have I bet they will be glad of this infomation.

Yes I know the Senior food is much better for them, I was feeding Whiskas and Felix Senior. It has to be the gravy kind though and then all mash up, trouble was in the end i seem to be throwing away more then what they were eating. With the Whiskas J use to love the small tins of Senior but then with her teeth problem she went off that so I have left that alone for present, will try again though.

I wondered if it was the chick something one cos have heard of cats eating that!

Kocka used to occasionally eat hilife chicken and turkey cos its a pate and she didnthave any teeth. Its one of the little cans but a complete food.  To be honest anything she would eat was a bonus cos she weighed as light as a feather and it wqs a fight just to get her to maintain that body weight.

I have just given my stock to a recues bin in the petshop cos my other cats wouldnt eat it..............sigh

What sort of litter are you using?

Maybe she was hungry........sorry  :shify:

Kocka never ate her litter but JJ looks gorgeous and so pleased she is doing well  ;D

Kocka lived on ad diet for the last few years of her life and if I could get her to eat anything else that was a bonus.

Gill I buy Tesco cheap litter, I've look on the bag but I couldn't see what is in it. I would of thought hungry too but I always leave dry food down , just in case they want something when I'm not around.

Yes she loves the a/d too, I've find the Hi life small cans she will eat now. I know they are not the best but at lest it is something. I always make sure that I keep a small stock of a/d in now.

Oddly, I think it was after Clapton had his last teeth out that he did it. Maybe it's to harden their gums or something? - although it was about 9 months ago, he has suddenly started eating dry food as well.

You might have something there Mark, strange they should both do that after teeth removed, as I said she doesn't do it all the time just odd times I caught her doing it.

Hi Mark, this is something new with J.J, she had not eaten litter before having her teeth out and she has had Kidney Disease for some time now. Do hope this doesn't mean it's getting worse. :scared:

Update on J.J.
Well it's been about 5 weeks since J.J had her teeth out. She was back at the vet's today for a check up, Her heart was racing but it did slow down after a while and you can still see that she does breath a little heavier but all in all our vet Jo was pleased with her.

She had lost a little weight which is what I had expected 3.15 last time and today 3.12/13 as I'm not feeding her all the time on a/d. I only use that if I think she hasn't eaten enough, as I know with Kidney Disease thats the most important thing is that they are eating.

Jo , still thinks she is remarkable and wants to see her again in the next 2/3 months.

I told Jo, that I had noticed that J, had a couple of times seemed to eat her cat litter, she said that she had heard of this before but as yet they are not sure why they do it. It could be connected to the Kidney problems, I did wonder if it was some thing she was lacking. I was dreading today but now I'm very pleased.
