She is going for a dental next Monday - they could have got her in Thurs/Fri this week, but I didn't want to do it so close to the weekend just in case she had issues afterwards. She is having bloods done first, I just hope that her organs are fine, I have never had such an old cat.

Zia is from a different rescue - although I dont like my rescue's vet either (or one of the ones at my own practice - I am very fussy. I am the same at my docs though, I wont see the male doc, will only see the female ones, would rather wait than see him). I am waiting for a decision from the manager at the moment.

She is still being picky with her food, so giving her the Antirobe tomorrow should be fun.

It's such a shame that you do lots for your rescue but dont have faith in their vet..... :( Its a pity you cant get your rescue to pay for the treatment, if not part!!!

Hope the jab gives her some relief!  ;)

Sounds as if you'll be happier using your own vet. Don't feel bad about not sleeping well and being on hyper alert because of worry about Zia....know just how you feel. Hope the ab jab really helps

Thanks everyone - bit of a weird trip really. Journey was a lot longer than I thought, so am pretty sure I am going to work something out to use my own vet - was a good 35-40 min drive, and that was on a SAt with no traffic, wouldn't like to get her there in a morning, nor do 4 trips in one day. i also didn't rate the vet, my vet gave her a better checkover and I only wanted to pop her on the scales!! Will have to see what my vets can do on Mon, but he has given her an ab jab, and 10 days of antirobe, so we have 12 days grace to get the dental done.

Thanks - I have been overreacting as usual and not sleeping well as a result. Am sure I am just imagining things, but her breathing seems different from the other cats, and I Think she is losing some weight on her back legs, although she is practically 18, so not that surprising really!!
Had a sweet phone call last night, the people who adopted Frankie had seen about her on CC when looking for screens, so rang to see how things were, which was nice.
App is at 10.20 in the morning, then I have to pop in the rescue to tell them what they have said. Still not sure about having the dental done through them, it just depends cos of travelling - we have 3 deadlines in work next week, so I can't go in late at all. I also have an events ceremony to go to on Thurs, so am losing a day then (unless I use my vet)

I hope so too - I am hoping that the rescues vet can do basic in house tests, my vet can do them on a Sat. I have found a few foods that she can eat with no problems, so am a lot happier now.

hope Zia's bloods come back just fine and she feels a whole lot better after her dental. Am I wrong, but doesn't Zia mean 'auntie' in italian?!  good luck with it all. My vet won't do bloods on a saturday (not routine) as the labs don't work until monday, do they?

If they refuse to do bloods, then she wont be having her dental there. I am actually going to see if they can do them on Sat for me, so we know there and then if she can have a dental - her original owners said that she had liver issues, but no vet records have been found, and there are no signs of it.

Fingers crossed everything goes ok for her.  I assume she will have bloods done first to make sure her organs can cope with the anaesthetic?  If they are ok, and they use an anaesthetic suitable for older cats, I'm sure she'll be fine and it will improve her quality of life.

Her vet visit is on Sat, I hope the vet says she is OK to have a dental. She has had a nice plate of sardines for her tea though, and some dry food.

Des our Miss gracie another Tortie also aged 18 had her dental done in jan of this year and sailed through it

We had bloods and used the lighter anasthetic and she was muching wet food when I picked her up and on biscuits on arrival home, she was a bit miffed as the vets only gave her one dish, at home she has 14 double bowls to chose from!

Me too - she is eating dry no problem though.
I honestly dont know, as she isn't with my rescue, so I dont know what their vets do. i am happy with the GA my vets use, maybe I should just offer to pay, and get her done at my vets. HEre is a pic I have just taken of her, she really doesnt look her age.

They are going to ring the vets tomorrow to book her in, but not sure how it will work, as she will have to have a consult first, and i can only get her there in the evening. The other thing concerning me is that it isn't my vet, so i dont know what anaesthetic they use. I have had dentals done on overweight 13 yo's with no issue, but nothing older. She is eating dry no problem though.

Try not to worry Des.  Dragan had a dental at 17 and it improved his quality of life.  You wouldn't even know he had had a general either.

Fingers crossed Desley.  Ask the vet if they will use an alternative anethestic (sp)    we recently had to take one of our old girls in at 17yrs old for a dental and they didn't use the one they normally do and she came to much quicker and had no lasting effects and is doing much better now.

I know how worrying it can be though... so fingers crossed and let us know how she gets on...

She is picking at her food, so I think she needs the dental the vet said she would need at some point in Jan - I am going to ring the rescue she is from in a bit (she isn't from my rescue), to see when we can get her in. She is 18 this month though - well, she could already be 18, I am just using the date that she came into the rescue as her birthday, so a bit of a worry for an anaesthetic. She is happy to play with me though, and has been going outside, so feels OK in herself, and I can get her to eat dry, so she isn't going to starve. Am going to make sure pre-op bloods are done with her age. I'd take a pic of her, but have no idea where the camera is, which is worrying.
