I think both of my rescues started moulting massively in ther weeks after arrival, my first had an allergy/overgrooming issue and was half bald when she arrived so that was hardly ideal... poor soul, my fluffy semi long haired ginger boy leaves hair EVERYWHERE pretty much constantly regardless of brushing  but I do recall the first few weeks it was coming out in clumps but I just put it down to the stress of the shelter and the new home, he's a sensitive wee fella, he is dropping clumps at the moment as well with the warmer temps, what is awful is I need to pick up the clumps fast because otherwise he will eat them  As if he doesn't get enough fur balls with grooming to actually eat bit of fallen hair, he's an idiot!!!  :scared:

it's getting a bit better now and she seems to be lighter in her coat so seems to be seasonal.  Vet was also not worried about it.  No bald patches.  She is not long haired as such but longer haired than the others and all cotton wool fluff rather than coarser hair, like my boys have.  Managed to get seven brushes full.  She loves it... :Luv:

Is she longhaired? Max, a maine coon type moggie I used to have, shed lumps of fur at about this time of year. It came out in balls. He was very good about being brushed; I did him every night, if I forgot, he told me off by staring at me!

Polly and Sam have started shedding more than normal. Maybe it's to do with the weather.
Cats were once gods; they have never forgotten this, nor have the people they own.

Peace so far today.  Wonder how long that will last.  Curtains are freshly washed and sprayed some odor remover on it which is si=upposed to help them ignore those places.  Let's see ow that helps.  Will keep the room open over night rather than shutting her in in the evening.  Lets see if it is her or Martha.

Will try feeding her downstairs but at a distance.  Did not take too long with Theo but he was so nervous being cooped up that he pood down those very same curtains...  New curtains for the summer when I will change all into a little boy's room.

I think it depends on the cat how soon they settle and become less stressed. Unfortunately they do keep spraying in the same place so your curtains are in for it. You can never wash them so the smell's 100% gone for a cat. There are some herbal remedies, mixture of passiflora and valerian, that you can use, but not sure about long term. A few drops of rescue remedy in her water could help.
Bringing her out of a safe zone too soon could just make things worse I think.  You could try the RR in everyone's water but there will always be hissyfitting at first. Hopefully things will calm down over the next few weeks and they will tolerate each other, even if they aren't best mates.

Again found mad lumps of hair.  She has to get her second jabs next week so she will see the vet anyway.  I found one thinning area behind her ear but no rash on her skin. The other thing that is troubling is that I found the curtains sprayed on AGAIN>  They have been washed three times in two weeks now.  Not sure who did it.  Normally they are only allowed in the upstairs rooms when I am here and only with supervision because my first two, Lennie and Martha (it's Martha mainly) were given up because of the ongoing spraying.  Not sure if new Madam Malena is actually doing it.

Would Bach help?  It's the two females who are worst with stress. The boys are ok.  Take things more casually generally although Lennie has hissed- a sound I have never in five years heard before.  Did not think he had it in him.

On a brighter note:  Malena chose to sit next to me for the second night running and is starting to demand attantion.  I really want to get her out of that room but how coukld I do it?  or is it too early?  have tried moving her food downstairs but the regimented eating order has gone upside down because no one wants to eat with her.

Woooooooooooo.. just brushed out Zeratuls coat and he's shedding like mad. I put it down to coat type as well as stress! Z's coat is very downy and separates into layers (undercoat hairs look like they've been crimped ). Koscha is the same-all fluff 'n' stuff! Both Keli and RW have standard cat coats, but they're still shedding to a point.
I wouldn't worry about it too much, I doubt she'll go bald and it's good that she'll let herself be brushed, it'll stop eventually  ;)

Mine leave large pieces of fur everywhere and 2 weeks is nothing in terms of cats settling, be patient

It is that time of year when the weather turns and they moult like mad - I started a thread about it in general Cat. Clapton leaves clumps all year round but he doesn't have any bald patches  :evillaugh:

DO NOT BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER ANIMALS DIE

I believe I am not interested to know whether Vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn't. To know that the results are profitable to the race would not remove my hostility to it.  Mark Twain

It does depend on the cat. Bob used to leave quite huge chunks of fur whereever he sat and would pull out equally scary looking chunks when grooming. Similarly would shed loads into the brush, but never went bald. It is probably a combination of spring and a new environment (cats lose hair when stressing), so should sort itself out when she is fully integrated ...

HAIR LOSS- never seen anything like it
« Reply #1 on: April 26, 2008, 21:09:59 PM »
I have had Malena now for over two weeks and yesterday she came downstairs and sort of sat next to me on the sofa for the firat time.  She is still totally skittish though and this morning she chased my orther female around the garden (my sweet martha) which was distressing but maybe its all early days still with them getting along.  Lots of hissing still. The only one she seems ok with is my ginger boy Theo- 1 year old last week.

I have noticed though that Malena is losing lots and I mean LOTS of hair.  In the morning i find whole wool balls all over the sofa, carpet, etc the likes of which I have never before seen.  The other three don't lose as much hair between them.  I have brushed her several times and  so far I can't see any bald patches but it is unnerving (7 brush fulls of hair and I could have kept going).  there has also been some spraying despite the Feliway but I think it was martha- maybe Malena in one place- which is also a bit unnerving.  However, I remember reaching this point with all of them- thinking have i done the right thing.  they all had their disastrous quirks.  As a reminder, Theo now is quite well accepted and adjusted and all that chasing around the house has gone down to a minimum.

So, has anyone any stories of hair loss or time scale of adjustment of a kitty to a new home (supoose it depends on the cat).
