Maybe it isn't so much the money as the effort involved in medicating  :tired:

Either way, she should sign the cat over rather that letting it die in a horrible way.

This really got my blood boiling!!!

Like many people I always put my cats first. 2 days before our last payday my OH's mum gave us a bag of chicken as macaroni cheese was on menu until we got paid. It was cooked and fed to Henry as he had been sick and needed a light diet.

At the moment CPL are paying for Henry's tablets as they have a policy whereby when you adopt an older cat they help with vet bills and because Henry got sick 2 weeks after we adopted him we weren't able to insure him. However as soon as money sorts itself out we fully intend to take over the cost of his monthly meds to save CPL £56 a month.

I've sent a message telling her that she could be in trouble if the vet reports her for not medicating the cat, will let you know what happens next - this is a horrible situation to be in, if it was anything else I could let it go but with animals you just can't

I agree and I would definitely report her as it is a criminal offence to withold medication as Mark has indicated. Please remember we are an animal s only voice.

Need reporting to the RSPCA so they go to see her regarding the tablets .
Perhaps if this was mentioned she might give the cat up to someone who will pay for them.
I am only on benefits -and my Smartie is on fortekor and i would live on toast forever if i had to - i would never take him off them without the vet told me to .
I am just getting the money together for Sophies senior bloodtest and Bungly booster ( not due till May )- but if i have to go without something -its no problem .
This person is despicable ! >:( >:( >:(

They clearly CAN afford the tablets, if they can afford those kind of holidays, mortgage etc - like Mark said, 38p a day is a packet of crisps and people seem to always have enough spare change for that!!

Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.

I would report her to the RSPCA  if She doesn''t give it the required medication - i have done that before and the cat had to be taken to the vet  as they went round to see them !

These people make me so angry -would be different if she needed a prescription for some thing-they aren''t cheap !

Well I've heard back from her, she doesn't want to rehome but they have decided to stop the medication, apparently "it is difficult"

I'm not sure of the exact wording but the new animal welfare bill states that people have a legal obligation to give their pets veterinary care  >:(

Is she persona non grata now?

Personally think the cat should be taken off her - all the holidays you mentioned -can;t be short of money !
People who aren''t prepared to pay for their animals medication should not be allowed to keep the animal -and to stop it without vet advice is downright cruel ! >:( >:(

If she lived near me - i am afraid her cat would mysteriously disappear at sometime !!!!

What makes me angry is these people see cats as objects and probably think they will get another one that isn't "faulty"  >:(

Last year somebody (Ela maybe?) posted about someone that regularly takes her cat to the rescue and a week later phones asking for kittens  >:( - they should be shot!

Definately should be re-homed to someone who actually loves their cats !
Yes, Mark -i have done that myself - i lived off food in my freezer from Xmas and then when that had gone -beans on toast , cheese on toast and sometimes just cereal -to pay for my vets bill .
I would always put them first and i always buy their food first and i spend whats left on my own food .
If its only enough for potatoes, bread and milk - it doesn''t matter as i know they are ok .
As for hoildays -well, i wouldn''t go and leave them - i have a sister in Wales and haven't visited there for 10 years as i don''t like leaving them .
My Personal opinion is -she should be ashamed of herself that she won''t pay for medication for her cat -but will have holidays etc -some people don''t deserve their cats love !

And there are others who would live on beans on toast to care for their pets  :-:

That is a really good price - almost cost. - my last vet was charging me £48 for 56 tabs. I know she is your friend but unless she is prepared to pay for meds, she should sign the cat over to a rescue. 38p a day  :-: - I understand people are on budgets but it's the price of a bag of crisps.

well I spoke to her last night apparently her vet has given her a prescription for 84 tabs and they are £32 - but she's not sure it is something she wants to pay for long term - not sure what to say

She can ask the vet for a prescription and get them 1/2 the price vets charge. My new vet decided to match VetUK price so I get 56 x 2.5mg for £25.00. I guess dogs take much higher doses and the tablets obviously are more expensive, ie a 5mg pill is almost as much as 2 x 2.5mg. If it's a big dog, it could be on 20mg a day

I agree- i would not stop the tablets ( can get them online for around £12) - but would get a second opinion from another vet .

they aren't on benefits or anything and have a mortgage so I wouldn't think they would be able to use PDSA

I certainly would not just stop a cat from taking its medication without a cets advice, it could cost the little one its life. I think your friend needs to go to another vet practice for a second opinion.

question from friend on fortekor
« Reply #1 on: April 16, 2008, 14:50:40 PM »
just had this email from a friend - told her not to bother with rspca, she isn't on benefit or anything but haven't got a clue about stopping tablets

"Took Illy for check up and every time i go theres a different vet who sees him,i am a bit upset they can never be straight ,now they want to xray on his heart £130.00 and they told he may not need to stay on the Fortekor but they have told me to keep giving him.and they said they wouldnt be able to treat him until we paid up for the last treatment so thats 5months away, hes on his last tablet tomorrow he hasnt got infection and he fine i might stop tablets and see how he goes its getting ridiculous, what do you think or should i take him for a second opinion to the RSPCA"

is fortekor something you can just stop??  anyone know
