Tell me what you want the title as and I will change it for you.  ;D

It seems that swampy has gone downhill since you went away and maybe he is scared you are going to leave again, I would suspect its stress related.

I hope he picks up

Swampy not well at all
« Reply #33 on: April 19, 2008, 12:17:30 PM »
He only ate a tiny bit yesterday so went to the vets today. He got vit B, antibiotic injection (again) and a Periactin. He still only ate about 1/8th of an alutray of Specific and a tiny teaspoon of k/d. That licking up the really small bit of food (the periactin seems to have made him lick but not eat) went on for 45 mins with a break or two. We don't think it's his cold because although it's bad, it's no worse than at many times before when he's eaten well. It started suddenly anyhow this not eating, on thursday. He's also scratching at his bed with his front paws, which doesn't make any sense. The vet thinks that it's his dementia and he may be giving up. I have to try to get something down him and spend the day with him to reduce his agitation. It breaks my heart. He was doing so well on tues and wednesday but apparently it can go like that. I'm trying not to give up hope and to keep calm as it seems to affect him if I'm upset.

I may try some sardines in tomato sauce later. Vet says to warm the tin in hot water, then try. It's so awful to watch him come to the kitchen and look interested and then not eat. If he'll lick, I'm going to keep on trying the blended renal food too as that's soup like. I'm not sure what to do and nor is the vet.
He says if he give him cortisone tabs, that his cold will get even worse as it will lower his immune system. If anyone can help with ideas, much appreciated right now.

PS I modified my first post to change the title but it didn't work?

Got back to find him refusing to eat -he ate tues and wed, but not yesterday (when replacement catsitter came and just plonked down a thick plate of k/d  >:(). Waiting for tomorrow to see if it continues, then off to the vet first thing otherwise. He's lost 200g being looked after by OH and catsitters as don't think they got nearly as much down him as it takes soooo long even on good days when he will eat.
I tried Science diet turkey which he ate a teaspoon of and he's had 4 'back of spoons' of renal but that's it...mega sloooow tongue licking. Also jammed a 1/4 pepcid down him at the 3rd attempt.
Only good thing is that he now seems to be peeing normally.  So am still worried but for different reasons now.

peeing now, but not eating much - just refused breakfast 2, having eaten a bit less than normal at breakfast 1 at some ungodly hour. I have to go to the airport now - if he's not right I'll have to come back early. I wonder if the nandrolone can have the opposite effect as he seems worse on it, not hungrier. He's not upset by bags etc (going away) as the little bag's out of the way anyhow. Cold's bad and last night his meowmy poked the tube of fucithalmic IN his eye when he jerked his head.
Positive vibes needed purr-lease!

He peed this afternoon and while not a tray-filler, not too bad. The positive vibes seem to be helping. Now could you good peeps do something about his appetite? Nandrolone hopeless this time around and he's struggling to nosh enough. The catsitter came around and was a bit casual and announced someone will be replacing him one day so I'm of course neurotic. I suppose 4 days isn't that long but ohhhhh how I worry about my furbabe Swampa.

small clump in the litter tray this evening so he has peed a bit. Still not as much as he normally does so please keep sending the positive pee vibes his way! Thanks everyone  I hope so much it's just a temp thing and that it's not the beginnings of a blockage.
The nandrolone hasn't helped him eat more (not like last time) but it did make him jump on Max and grab him by the scruff - poor Max looked very startled.

he said it's an emergency if he keeps going to the tray and straining and crying while producing nothing or just a dribble. Then I must (or OH must) get him to the vet within 24 hours.

With tom cats it is! Sending Swampy positive vibes~~~~~~~~~

just got back. Vet says I must take in a pee sample today or tomorrow (assuming....) and that right now his bladder doesn't feel blocked. Hard to say why he's stopped his copious peeing but wait and see. I told him I was going away on monday and unfortunately the vet's not here after tomorrow morning, so keeping everything crossed that it will settle down. I have to keep him on renal food. He got a Vit B and more nandrolone as his cold is awful but his weight's good.
he said it's an emergency if he keeps going to the tray and straining and crying while producing nothing or just a dribble. Then I must (or OH must) get him to the vet within 24 hours.

Hi Swampy's mum

Hope everything went well at the vets this morning.  If you're worried about Swampy, perhaps the vets will keep him in for a few days while you are away.  I don't know very much about his medical problems.....haven't been on Purrs very much over the last year or so.....but I do know lots about FLUTD.

Lots of love to the little fella for a speedy recovery. :get well:

Best wishes,

Roz

he's eaten badly this morning. only a little bit of k/d and a teaspoon i/d. then drank an awful lot, more than even normal. His appointment's at 10 so hope he pees before then as normally with that water intake he'd pee a fountain. he's having a bit of a senior day so far - silent miaowing and agitated, predators everywhere - but is now zzzz. Very worried. I know I'll probably be told to 'watch him and see' and it's the weekend, I can't get out of here on sunday (roads all closed for the stupid marathon) & I'm supposed to leave at 8.30am monday.

K, if he's happy enough though and he's just not pee'd and he's behaving as normal, then you need to make the call of whether or not to take him. But obviously because of his history I would keep a very keen eye on him. If he's keen to go to the loo but nothing, then take him in asap. If your gut is telling you to get him treated then I would. He's a special case as many of us know.  Let him have access to fresh water, maybe add some to his food to help him along, but only if you know this will help him for sure.

Let us know how he gets on. x

Swampy not well at all
« Reply #1 on: April 10, 2008, 19:19:40 PM »
This morning I noticed Swampy had not done his usual copious pee in the tray. He'd done a dribble down the side, a tiny amount landing outside the tray. At lunch time he did pee once, a bit, although maybe not as much as usual. He's not been since. He would normally have peed 4 times by now, some bigger than others. I'm very worried that he has crystals. I'm not sure how urgent it is, as there is some alarming stuff about "rush the cat to the vet or he can die" on the internet. He has an appointment for 10.15am tomorrow morning. Can  I wait until then or should i ring the emergency vets? He is behaving normally. Is it ok to wait and see if he pees overnight? Should I give him water?

How is this treated? How long does it take to clear up normally? I am supposed to be going away on Monday for a few days, including for a medical appointment for myself, but must cancel if he is unwell. This is the first time this has happened. Any help or advice would be great. Thanks everyone.

PS on the phone to the emergency vet when Swamp did a little one, so he says wait until tomorrow unless he keeps going and nothing comes out or is in pain. What would the vet tomorrow normally do? I'm not only nervous because am supposed to go away mon to thurs, but our roads are all closed on sunday because of the London marathon :(
