Yeah, didn't think of that Kelly. I dont think any cats should be allowed out younger than 6 months, regardless of what age they are spayed.

Sad thing is, these vets influence others who get kittens as people pass on 'advice'. I'm sure Des will agree that we've had some enquiries where people assume that the kittens can go out at about 4 months old whether spayed or not - I don't understand why people are so quick to get their fluff balls out of the house?!?!?! I know litter trays are a pain but making sure the little ones are safe and wise enough to go out is worth it.

Shadow was a month small for her age, and when neutered at 6 months, she was a week off coming into season - and that was in December!! That vet should see some of the 8mo's we have taken in with kittens.

The thing is he said that she could go out  his reasoning was she probably wouldn't come into season till about nine months, due to her size  >:(

I don't suppose Mr Amorous Tom is bothered about her size...

That is understandable with her being small though Ellie, this vet was saying it is OK to go out as soon as vacc'd, rather than wait till neutered, which is worrying, and will lead to pregnancy.

if there is anyone in Suffolk reading this, there is someone else on CC who could do with a new vet - her vet wont do her brother and sister till male is 7mo, and female is 8mo.

 That is shocking!  >:(

It is but unfortunately it happens  >:( My old vet won't spay Rascal till she was nine months, something about her being small and hormones  :tired: they wouldn't spay/neuter any cat until six months  :tired:

Luckily she is an indoor cat and Mupps had the snip.

What chance do rescues have if vets are giving out this kind of advice?? I know it is one of the reasons my vet is happy to do kittens younger, to make sure they can go out and not get pregnant, but I have to say I do think that anything younger than 6 months is too young for kittens to be exploring, unless it is in a cat proofed garden.
