are booster injections necessary?

I don't have mine vaccinated agains FeLV as they're indoor cats, but they have the flu and enteritis boosters.  Definitely need to get them done, although there is one vaccine that only needs to be done every 3 years (just one component of it though - forget which one).  And like MM says - if you need to board them in a cattery, they will need to be up to date with vaccinations.

I get mine done every year, but do I really need the FELV one if they just go out into the garden?

Whats the difference Michelle? My vets has never asked if I want the FELV jab or not.

I suppose my cats could only catch it from others outside of the garden?

Your vet wouldnt mention it because if you say no it halves the price 
Felv doesnt survive outside of the body so a catproofed garden would protect them as they would need close contact with an infected cat.

Betsy, if you ever need to board Thomas he will need yearly jabs or you'll struggle to find somewhere to leave him.

Purevax say 3 yearly for enteritis in their information leaflet, same as dogs.

Tilly had boosters last night and we had this conversation with the vet because Oscar always gets very ill after boosters - she said the only thing that bothered her for him in a cat proofed garden with all the other cats fully vaccinated was the enteritis one, she said although it was only licenced for 1 year in reality it probably lasted three years

If the boosters include the feline leukemia injection, request that the vet adminsters that one in the rear leg if possible, you know, just incase.

Our vets always inject for Felv at the rear end (top of leg) of the cat.

Betsy, pls do ask the vet to give ( if you choose to have it ) the Felv in the leg, because of the very very slight chance of it causing vaccine associated sarcoma, as I'm sure you know most vets give the vaccinations in the scruff, cats can live without a leg.

I personally dont think you do if you can guarantee they wont come into contact with other cats, I think Candice's vet said it was unnecessary with a catproofed garden.

My 1st cat lived to be 26 and she never had any injections and was very lucky and only went to the vet 2 or 3 times in all her 26 yrs and one of them was to be put out of her misery. 

My 2nd cat got her 1st injection when she was about 3 and this was because I read in the paper that lots of cats were dying of cat flu in my area.

The cat I have now has annual boosters even though she is indoor, you never know what I could bring in and give her! I would recommend you do get the boosters as you never know what will happen and it's better to be safe than sorry these days.

If you dont have boosters then you have to start all ob=ver again.................you didnt say what booster it was did you or am I going mad LOL

I wouldn't take the risk with my three ... especially because Bertie contracted cat flu when he was 2 years old and the vet said it would probably have killed him if he hadn't had his booster ....

As much as it galls me to say it, probably is.

I read somewhere the FELV is not necessary for older cats as they normally get an immunity to it but on tell my mate oldie-Jill she told me she'd lost a couple of olduns over the years to FELV.

Was told when we got thomas that he would need a booster in april this year , hes 3 years old. is it best i get it done?
