Packaged like an M&S meal for one - ergh! No!!  There's too much packaging about as it is.  I'd reject it on that basis

Recipies by Jamie Oliver - nope.  He does human food - that would seem to be to be a cheap gimmick.

Organic Ingredients - definitely.  I eat organic myself and would be happier if my cats could, too.

Low in fat with extra Vitamins and minerals - Nope.  Again, that's a thing for humans, just as 'with vegetables' appeals to humans.  Cats shouldn't need extra vits or low fat unless they're obese, or lactating or something.  Cats don't need vegetables, either.

A fresh and chilled meal - definitely not.  Cats don't like chilled stuff, they prefer it to be body temperature.

Packaged like an M&S meal for one

maybe if I was feeling silly and sentimental for christmas or birthday but otherwise no.

Recipies by Jamie Oliver - definitely not - my least favourite TV Chef - now Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall would be pushing my buttons  ;)

Organic Ingredients - highly desirable as at least I could be moderately confident the animal I was feeding my animals had had as good a life as my animals

Low in fat with extra Vitamins and minerals - only if they were overweight

A fresh and chilled meal - definitely not chilled as they prefer it at room temperature. Fresh is always good though!

Here you go!

Packaged like an M&S meal for one No, not really.

Recipies by Jamie Oliver He does Italianish human food, so no, not for a cat.

Organic Ingredients maybe if all else looked good (high meat content, complete food)

Low in fat with extra Vitamins and minerals not really, complete food should contain vitamins anyhow.

A fresh and chilled meal No, would only be warming it up constantly to luke warm.

Packaged like an M&S meal for one - Nope, she's a cat! Packaging may sway me when it comes to my meals but for my cat it's quality of the ingredients and if she will eat it

Recipies by Jamie Oliver - Not at all, since when was he an expert on cat nutrition anyway?

Organic Ingredients - already plenty to choose from and Organic doesn't necessarily mean better, high meat content would be more appealing

Low in fat with extra Vitamins and minerals - fat is important in a cat's diet, I would only feed a low fat diet if prescribed by a vet

A fresh and chilled meal - No again sorry... as has already been said, cat's don't like cold food so it would need heating. It would also cause storage issues as I buy in bulk

Ok here's mine. So only 6 more after mine.

Packaged like an M&S meal for one would not attract me at all. My cat has special dietary requirements, however, even if she didn't, packaging does not sway me.

Recipies by Jamie Oliver Definitely not. I'd be paying for his name on the package rather than the actual food.

Organic Ingredients this would sway me, however, they would have to have a high meat percentage.

Low in fat with extra Vitamins and minerals For a cat with dietary problems maybe, however, depends on the vitamins and minerals, as those might cause more problems

A fresh and chilled meal nope.

Hi thanks for all the replies so far, I know the options aren't brilliant (or neccessarily what you're looking for in cat food) but they're part of the brief :shy:  To complete the research another 7 answers would be fantastic thankyou, so that i can have stronger results to mould my campaign around.  Any help is greatly appreciated,   Cat_lover

I have seen Olli single serve in Tesco. They are a gimmick though as the dish is full so the food goes all over the floor when they eat - also you have to to mash it witout making a mess.

The dishes move too and are not easily recyclable  >:(

I dont shop in M&S so dont know what they look like. Pouches are "single" serve already....

Not for pet food, unless it was a high meat % but then it wouldnt be JO name thats got me

Organic Ingredients
I always look at organic pet foods, but its the ingredients that seal the deal.

Quote
Low in fat with extra Vitamins and minerals
That wouldnt interest me, i would just feed less of a tasty normal fat food

A fresh and chilled meal
Interesting idea but the cold issue would be abig one here, there would be vomit everywhere

Packaged like an M&S meal for one: There's already something like this on the market (Olli single serve) but only in a multipack. However, if I could get something like this available singly, in a small portion and in a white disposeable dish it would interest me as it'd be perfect to take to shows for my cat. At shows I'm always disposing the bulk of a standard pouch at the end of the day as show halls are invariably really warm and stuffy and wet food goes off really quickly. And of course, my girl insists on wet food at shows. If in the right packaging to satisfy GCCF rules on white pen furnishings, this could be a big hit with the cat fancy.

Recipies by Jamie Oliver: Unless this was veterinary formulated, I don't think I'd find this of interest. I'm not sure a celebrity chef could understand that what my cats needs are and IMHO it'd just be a promotional gimmick.

Organic Ingredients: possibly, but only as an occasional treat and only if the ingredients balance was right. On the other hand, there's no guarantee that my cats would actuall eat it...

Low in fat with extra Vitamins and minerals: Potentially as I do have one slightly portly puss, but especially with dry food, most manufacturers tend to do a "maintenance" version e.g. Royal Canin, Nutro Choice etc.

A fresh and chilled meal: I honestly don't think this would work. Cats prefer their food at room temperature for the most part and I tend to factor in my two when I do a meat shop anyway. Mine are suckers for fresh meat and they do need to see whether what I've bought is suitable for consumption.  :evillaugh: Buying an extra dollop of mince or an extra sausage is probably a cheaper option and I'd know my two would eat it.  ;)

I think the bottom line when it comes to cat food is whether the cats will actually eat it. A lot of brands and ranges seem to pander to the whims and choices of the cats' owners slaves when in fact what a cat really wants is canned whole mouse or pouched greenfinch....  :evillaugh:  Well, that's what Madam Pearl tells me.....  :naughty:

Hi, I posted last week asking for help for a Uni Assignment and got loads of great replies thankyou, I have just one further question for you all to complete my research for the hypothetical scenario where I'm advertising a new brand of Cat Food.  Any replies would be fantastic...

Which of these factors would attract you most to a new brand of cat food?  (please explain the reason for you answer if possible or why you didn't choose the others)

;D Packaged like an M&S meal for one

 :shy: Recipies by Jamie Oliver

 :innocent: Organic Ingredients

:) Low in fat with extra Vitamins and minerals

;) A fresh and chilled meal

Thankyou to all, Cat_lover

To answer each one of those scenarios

M&S meal for one - I'm not generally lured by fancy packaging (I might be for me, but not for my cats!) and it sounds like such an option would be expensive - with a lot of the price being for the packaging!

Organic ingredients - would attract me to look further as I dont think there are a lot of pet foods that are organic, but I would only buy of the ingredients were right

low in fat with extra vitamins - would not necessarily attract me as I dont think cats need a diet that's particularly low in fat, and my cats are not overweight.  I would be wary of extra vitamins and minerals.  Most commercial cat foods have such things added as many are destroyed in the cooking process, but too many vitamins can be harmful

Fresh and chilled meal - I would be interested as I assume this kind of food would not be as highly processed as your average can/pouch of food?    But the fact that it wouldn't keep well or long (unless you could freeze it) would mean it could only be an occasional meal/treat rather than a food I'd buy regularly

I think most of us on here are more picky and knowledgeable about food than your average pet food consumer, and I know that I don't buy any cat food without reading the ingredients list, so it doesnt' matter how it's packaged or marketed as I buy based on how I perceive the quality of the food.

I wouldnt be swayed by any of those points, cat food is not sold like human food.

Most cats will not eat chilled food and if you open some food and then put in fridge , thats the last they will eat of it............before the fridge

The other problem with chilled food is that not all cats like food cold (their normal food would be body temperature) and could make them poorly, and my cats dont always like to wait for their tea when I Come home from work.

to be honest none of those things would sway me really - there's too much packaging on stuff imo anyway and though I don't skimp on what I spend on my lot I get the feeling chilled meals would be expensive.  I think most of the food you can get now is balanced to extra anything would make me think they probably didn't need it

Whilst I'm here I might as well see if I can do it again  :scared: before lunch is done.

I wouldn't be attracted by any of those I'm afraid. None of them I consider to be important whilst looking at pet food.

Packaging means nothing to me.

Recipes from a chef would mean nothing. As Mark said they wouldn't know about pet nutrition. I'd feel they were just after some extra money. Likewise I wouldn't go for it if it was by a famous vet or whatnot.

Organic ingredients. Not really. Just because something is Organic it doesn't mean it's any good. It's all about the ingredients used - type and quality. You can have Organic ingredients, but they can be all the wrong ones. Like huge quantities of rice, or grains. Just being Organic is not good enough for me. I have tons of Organic treats for my dog .. its because of the excellant ingredients and manufacturing that sold me. The Organic is just an added bonus.

Low in fat - I wouldn't even look at it unless I had a specific need to. And that wouldn't be because I had an overweight animal .. I'd try other things before even considering low in fat food.

Fresh and chilled .. no. Firstly it can't really be bought in bulk. Not for it to stay fresh (unless it could be frozen). IF I was considering feeding fresh food then I'd do it myself through feeding either homemade or raw. I know it would work out cheaper.

For me choosing food is ALWAYS about the ingredients and the quality of them which meet the nutritional requirements I'm after. I know the sorts of things I want in the food and what I don't want in the food. Then I look at cost and ease of availability. The things listed aren't actually anything I've ever considered or even look at when looking at new foods. I'm also not sold on gimmicks when it comes to pet food either.

Best I can do at the moment .. sorry I did have a much better reply earlier which vanished  :-:

None of those would appeal to me, the main thing I look for is meat content, and at the moment, fibre content for Molly. WE arent bothered by organic foods here, nor nice packaging, and while we dont care who makes the food, wouldnt be swayed more by a human chef.

There was very long one at that  :-: It went a bit kookie, I tried editing it and the whole thing disappeared ... will have to write it up again.

There was, where's it gone

I tried to post earlier, but the site crashed (doh!), and I haven't got around to re-typing it all yet.

Must remember to copy before I hit send if its a long one  :(

Anyway, the general gist was that I wouldn't really be swayed by any of the points raised below.

For me, its about the quality of the food, not how its packaged, or who is endorsing it.  Although my boy is now largely on a kidney diet, I would not buy food which is lower in fat etc unless specifically directed by the vet, to be honest.

Its also got to last a long time as most of us buy in bulk, so the idea of freshly chilled food would probably not be workable, unless it was for a nice treat or something.

Packaged like an M&S meal for one - Most cat people aren't fooled by packaging. We all know Sheba only has 4% meat  :evillaugh:

Recipies by Jamie Oliver - would stop me buying it. I'm sure Jamie Oliver doesn't know the first thing about cat nutrition.

Organic Ingredients - good but there are already plenty of organic foods available

Low in fat with extra Vitamins and minerals - cats need fat to convert to energy and unless they are obese, shouldn't eat low fat foods. Also Burns say added vitamins are harmful so any more than the optimum amount isn't good.

A fresh and chilled meal - possibly but again high days & holidays.
