cat constipation remedies?

From what I can remember, Slippery Elm can also be used for constipation.  Hopefully you'll sort something to get things moving

my latest bottle of lactulose comes with a measuring cap on top. Pour some sticky muck into the cap, then syringe it up. Then wash the cap straight away as this stuff sticks!  1ml - 1.5mls is actually very little when you see it. I would start with a lowish dose (say 1mls), then if it doesn't work, try 1.5mls and if that works a bit too well, adjust from there. Ideally get a clearly marked 2.5ml or 2ml syringe from the vet (hopefully would give you one) or you can buy very cheaply at a chemist. Good luck.

A teaspoon is 5ml so you really need a syringe to measure that properly, the chemist/vet can sell you one with the lactulose

long term liq parafin isnt actually that great.

Get some "lactulose" from the chemist     Its a stool softener and not absorbed so not a direct laxative.  you could ask your vet for dosage as i cant remember what it is for a cat, failing that try 0.5 ml twice daily and see how it goes, it can take a few days to take effect so if after 3 or 4 days no change increase to 1 ml twice daily etc.

How much is that in terms of teaspoons? I dont have anything to measure the amount,

Just remembered the name of the stool softening capsules - Peridale.

Mine got moved from katalax to lactulose (1 - 1.5ml depending how blocked) which I syringe in and they don't mind the taste (very sticky though; watch your clothes). It usually takes about 7 -8 hours to work in my 2's experience. I think it's gentler and more palatable all round than katalax. Poor wee girl, hope it works for her. All the best.

you could also get a wee syringe from the chemist (or vet) for lactulose if you wish (it doesnt really have a taste though)

Thank you both very much I will obtain some lactulose and I will look intoKatalax.

I was using her paws too medicate her but now she just ignores anything I put there so I have to grind her noroclacv and predisterone up fine, mix with as little marge as pssible to make a paste and put it in her mouth...that way the tablets dont cut her tumour as they pass down the gullet.

My cat Dragan had chronic pancreatitis and got really bad constipation.  Lactulose helped him, the dosage was 1.5mls twice daily or lower if he wasn't having problems.  There is also a stool softening drug (can't remember its name now) that he had prior to being prescribed the Lactulose.  Also found that if he was really bad Katalax for a couple of days on his paws helped.  Good luck

My cancer cat has constipation and I have been using liquid parrafin as recommended by the vet. Unfortunatly it is not working and I wonder if anyone knows a surefire remedy which is preferably tastless and odorless and can be added to her food?

I already have to give her prednisone and norocalv tablets (ground with a little marge so she can take them in without cutting her tumour which is where the windpipe meets the stomach pipe) twice a day and dont want to further stress her.
