Feeding advice, litter tray positioning, getting rid of the tray when you fit a flap, lets hope you dont take a nervous cat who wont toilet outside where its scary.

Their cattery does look nice tho.....

Gill, i dont think its taking the moral high ground, even ped rescues dont charge that much! I know what i would do and i would tell them why

I've sent them an email about their feeding advice. It's really bad that they're recommending dry food based on such an erroneous fact. I'm not suggesting or expecting them to completely change tack and suggest a wet only diet (even though I think that is the best) but I think it's very bad of them to suggest that people try and switch their cats over to a dry food only diet.

I agree. They're maybe just a bit misguided. The advice about food sounds like they're making a classic mistake of not calculating the protein content of wet and dry foods on dry matter basis (wet foods usually turn out to have more protein than dry - the percentage on the label only appears low because of the water content). They are giving a lot of poor advice to new owners who may know no better. And charging different prices for different colour kittens is crazy, imo.

Where are you lot getting this information from anyway? I can't see a link to it on the page that Gill linked to?

Dodgy feeding advice as well

"It is essential to get them eating complete dried foods [only] as soon as possible - a cat needs 30% protein, not available in any tinned/sachet food. For the first two weeks, mix tin and dried food together [if the cat was not already on dried food when it leaves the sanctuary], slowly removing a half teaspoonful of tinned food every few days and increasing the dried food, until 2 months later the cat is eating only dried food. Not only is it cheaper for you, but doesn’t go off in the summer, and is far healthier for the cat! Royal Canin & Arden Grange supply all new owners with a free Kitten or adult pack including a bag of top quality food. Obviously fresh cooked chicken and fish are an excellent supplement! "

What makes it worse is they don't even make a point of saying clean water should be available at all times

I think someone needs to have a word with them.

does sound very commercially motivated - and interesting that they combine their rescue work with the running of a luxury cat accommodation business. Wonder if the luxury cats get their food shoved beside their litter tray?

Sounds very odd to me - Catchat isn't a shop window and I wonder if they know people are charging like that?

We "hope" to get £50 towards costs but that is regardless of age, colour or whatever.

And oddly, they don't do homechecks - they tell people to bring proof of address and a carrier with them if they want to take the cat straight away -

It does make sense that without money they can't exist but a donation should be exactly that - I really can't get my head round the colour thing but I suppose it is a case of supply & demand.

I agree - I think it's awful and very wrong to charge a different amount depending on the colour. Apart from being very expensive, all that does is give a message to people that particular colours are rare and valuable. Which means that someone is probably going to get the bright idea that they should breed from them, then they too can charge that amount for each kitten

One thing in their favour is they dont pts oldies but to home a 1000 cats at much higher prices than other rescues makes me

It means those greys will go to who ever can stump up the £350 plus for their colour not necessarily the ability to provide the best home.
I could care for them amazingly but not for that amount of money

Some breeds of pedigree kitten are around £250 and given a choice of buying a moggie kitten for £200 or spending an extra £50 on a pedigree kitten that I knew the health status of its family etc I know which I'd do!

Looking at their prices for a moggy kitten their unpapered ped kittens would prob cost the same as a papered one from a breeder!

Just found their website and they will charge £200 for a white kitten, £175 for a red one and from £175 for blue kittens. I really am shocked that the costs varies according to the colour of the kitten.

Yes they are moggies and for pedigrees they have not given a rate, say it will be variable! The basic kitten price is £125 each and this does not include ginger or white as they cost more but not as much as blue/grey.
