Smelly litter tray - any ideas?

not if you do it gradually - just mix 1/4 new to 3/4 oldstyle litter, then half and half, the reverse the proportions until it is 100% new stuff, will take a few days, but the deodorising benefits of the wood litter should kick in earlier than that...

Have you tried using the wood pellets?

I gave up using the wood pellets when Homer refused to use them, he preferred the softer granule type but as he no longer uses the litter tray I will try it again.  Do you think the kittens will object to the change?

I am sure they will have it, although it may be in smaller bags in the huge Tesco in Douglas.

I'd agree with this. Pets at Home (I know you don't have one there Yvonne but might be worth checking if you can get it shipped in) sell 30L bags for under £9 each and one bag lasts me nearly 6 weeks. Natural pine, no artificial smellies. Lexy won't use anything else and if it smells I know she's concentrated her urine again and she goes on high wet food for a couple days.

some of the deodorising pellets are highly perfumed like carpet deodorisers are - I would avoid them ike the plague because what smells nice to us is not necessarily going to smell nice to the cat, and it is, after all, it's most private sanctuary. Oh and try different litters and more frequent changes as others have suggested

Never tried those, but it might be worth trying a different brand of litter or changing the litter more often.

It does not bother me but the old man appears to have a sensitive nose.
