It's as expensive as I first thought, the entire back end and two big chunks either side are useable so all in all I need 60 foot (10 panels) of fencing erected - have had a quote of £1045 for closeboard and from a different company £610 for panels.  Beans on toast for me for the forseeable future then!

http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=9276455&fh_view_size=6&fh_start_index=6&fh_eds=%3f&fh_location=%2f%2fcatalog01%2fen_GB%2f_wide_price_range%3d0-50&fh_search=fence+panels&fh_refview=search&ts=1202222189896&isSearch=false

16.98 for the 6ft high ones, now if you can wait abit b&q (and focus etc) normally have sales on in a couple of months and often you get good bargains on that type of fencing, (we did)

just found this though
http://www.buyfencingdirect.co.uk/search-lap-panel-pack-of-10-glg-834   -- on special offer and for 10 x 6mx6m = 15.90 each

Its the posts etc that soon mounts up the money, they are normally 2.1 - 2.4 metres long  since a good bit will be buried in ground and any top bits can be sawn down to size and ours is 10cm x 10cm diameter to ensure sturdy enough.

I have these fence panels here and the cheapest was b & q.  The thing is you still need the big square long posts per each panel and they are best cemented in (unless you want the panelling to blow down in strong gales)  depends how protected from the elements the garden is i suppose.
We were prob abit under 1k for our materials helen (mind you the slabbing of the patio cost us 1300 quid and they arent even fancy decorative slabs  :scared:  )

ps the cost of fencing did not include labour as M & my uncle did it.

see mine below, i think our garden is 40m x 30m (or is it 30m x 20m ?  cant remember but you get the idea) plus of course mine isnt catproofed.

I can't believe the cost either! Are there any nice East Europeans near you? Or handymen that advertise in the local newsagents? Moonlighting fencing co employees? Ouch, this country is sooooo expensive

Eek Helen....my fence panels only cost £15 each for 6'x6'!  :scared:

Would that be for putting the fence up also?  :shify:

God Yes!  I seriously struggle to put a shelf up so there's no way I'd ever attempt to put a fence up   It's not even that big a garden, I was flabbergasted when I heard how much it would cost.  Hopefully when I get the proper quotes it'll be cheaper than that but I'm not hopeful!

Hi Helen,

Bet your so excited about your new house (apart from the ahole stress of moving, but it'll all be over soon, yay!) and the boys will be made up with the great outdoors!

Mine have access to an enclosed run (never heard of secur a cat, any web links for interest?) and just have normal flu/enteritis vaccinations.(Don't fancy the FelV myself and with them being FIV there's even the question marks over them having the normal jabs)

Saying that, one dim vet wasn't listening on one visit and Buffy was given the FelV vaccine, fortunately with no side effects.

Good luck and can't wait to see photos of the boys in their new home

x

Mine have free range and i wont use the felv vaccine. The vaccine gives the same immunity as natural immunity, 85%.

The virus doesnt survive in the environment so your boys will be fine in their catproofed garden.
I cant believe the fence panels will cost 1k

I have been making my own panels with those vertical woods, cant think what they called at moment. I made the big double gate at the bottom  but as garden is 100ft long, there was no way I could afford to buy fencing already made.

we haven't got panels I think its called close boarded basically vertical planks slightly overlapping each other, I'll get the number when I'm home tonight and send it over to you, he was the cheapest quote we had by far (some didin't even turn up!) and was a very pleasant man as well.  we've got a diy version of cat proofing that looks similar, it took about two days to put up but that was because it was freezing and our hands keep freezing up! and yes they have the leukemia vac

Yes please Dawn - Oxford isn't that far from me and I guess if it's a slow month they might consider it.  I haven't had official quotes yet but have done a bit of research, asking everyone I vaguely know have they had a fence done recently and if so how long was it and how much did it cost :evillaugh:  Apparently there is a fence panel shortage in Europe (google fence panel shortage and see what comes up) so the panels themselves have doubled in price.

Back on topic!  Are yours vaccinated against leaukemia? Also, is your catproofing the secur-a-cat - if it is how long did it take to go up and what type of fence panels have you got?

I'm not having the catproof bit installed professionally, won't be able to afford it as the fence is going to cost £1000 - I didn't realise how expensive fencing is  Am going to ask friends and family to help do it for me, I'll supply wine, takeaway Nandos and screwdrivers  :evillaugh:

It took one weekend (afternoons) and another Saturday afternoon.  But that was doing it in scorching weather with a wobbly step ladder!!  My cordless drill also kept running out so I had to wait an hour in between charges! :tired:

I would say a day tops for a small garden for a professional (using proper tools that last longer than 10 mins per charge!!!)

Sounds about right to me Susanne - escape will be impossible, I'm already drawing up plans to cat proof the front door area  :evillaugh:

Handy Candy - How long did it take you and your power tool to put it up?  I have no intention of DIY-ing it as I can't even put a shelf up but will GSTDIY-it (get someone to DIY it!).

I'd say no need for leukaemia as they aren't going to be coming into contact with other cats any more than if they were indoor cats (ie only if they escape).

Mine are about 5 foot and are just bog standard fence panels with horizontal slats.  I installed the system myself with my brand new cordless drill - just call me Handy Candy!!!!

Yep it is and since I've had it installed not one cat has managed to get in  :innocent:

Oh good  :)  What type of fences do you have?  I'll need to put a new fence in both sides, Roz has said 5 foot miniumum, ideally 6 foot. Am not sure what type of panels to go for though - there's so much choice!

Not sure if them being ill is a regular side effect of leukaemia. Lexy had hers when I adopted her and she was ok. No illness.

Probably not regular but I've read it a few times on here, just being ultra paranoid about my precious boys  :)

Myself and my vet just felt it was unnecessary considering they don't 'roam'.

No leukaemia for mine.  My vet agreed it wasn't needed as I could guarantee that they do not come in contact with other cats.

That was sort of my thinking as they won't be coming into contact with any other cats.  Is yours the secur-a-cat fencing candyshandy?

At the moment the boys are indoor only and are vaccinated for flu and enteritis but not leaukemia as they don't go outside.  We are moving later this week and they will soon have their very own cat-proofed garden  :wow:

Will they need to have the leaukemia jabs now?  I'd rather they didn't have it if possible as I've heard of lots of nasty side effects.
