Unfortunately, as Desley has pointed out, there is no way of telling which cats will develop FIP, as FIP is a mutation of the coronavirus, which many cats carry with no ill effects anyway. Those that do show ill effects following exposure to the coronavirus may have mild diarrhea, which is often just put down to a tummy upset. It is is only in a very small percentage of cats where the coronavirus mutates into FIP. The coronavirus is common in multi cat households, like breeding catteries. It sometimes happens that when a kitten carrying the coronavirus goes to its new home from a breeding cattery, the stress of the move etc can cause the virus to mutate into FIP. You can test for the coronavirus, but that still won't tell you whether a cat or kitten will develop FIP.

Very sad to hear about Monty.

Hi Gail,

I am sorry that you lost Beau to FIP, as Desley has said he could have picked up the virus anywhere.

Cats that are already infected with the FIP virus shed the virus in their saliva and in their toilet. Other  cats then become infected by inhaling or ingesting the virus, sometimes by direct contact with an infected cat  or by contact with virus-contaminated surfaces EG: clothing, bedding, toys or food/water dishes.
So its usually very difficult to pin point where a cat has picked the virus up from

Responded Michelle

Gail - cats dont 'catch' FIP per se, they come into contact with the corona virus and it all depends on their immune system reacts to it - but around 75% of the cat population has come into contact with the virus at one point, and FIP is actually quite rare, so sadly it is just one of those things.
Please spay your cat

RIP Monty ... play hard at the bridge you poor little soul.
In ancient times cats were worshiped as gods; they have not forgotten this.

RIP little one - and he could have developed FIP anywhere, it is such a random illness, it all depends on how the cats immune system reacts to the corona virus.
Please spay your cat

While at the vets with my ^Skaggy^ i asked about ^Monty^ and he has passed to the Bridge.
I am going to send his Mummy and Daddy a card

R.I.P ^Monty^ - taken far too young, but i promise you i will do something about it. You never should have caught FIP from where you did.

I lost my Beau to FIP nearly 3 years ago.  I had to take him, I couldn't see him suffer, even though it hurt and still does when I see FIP I know deep down I did the right thing.

Please advise your friend to take monty and let him go with dignaty and be pain free. My Beau and Zak will be there to meet him and show him round the Rainbow Bridge he won't be on his own.

I am so sorry to hear this, FIP is an awful disease - but please dont feel guilty, there is no way of knowing who will get this awful disease. Please talk to your friend and gently suggest pts, no cat with FIP will go painlessly without intervention.
Please spay your cat

FIP is such a terrible thing and hope she releases him to the Bridge before he gets too bad. My heart goes out to her and her kitten  :'(

My Lala's Brother, Monty,  (not owned by me) is dieing of F.I.P

He is only 8mths old - So unfair.

I feel guilty because if i had had him (and i did think about having him aswell as Lala) he wouldnt have caught FIP
Just hope he passes quickly and without too much pain.
